The Miami Marlins announced Friday that they had hired Kim Ng as their new general manager, making Ng the first female GM in MLB history.According to ESPN, Ng is now the highest-ranking woman employed by any of the 30 MLB teams and is likely the first woman to hold the title of general manager for any major pro sports team — though other women, like former Oakland Raiders CEO Amy Trask and Los Angeles Lakers President Jeanie Buss have held executive roles with pro sports teams.Ng is also the second person of Asian descent to lead the baseball operations of an MLB team, following in the footsteps of Giants president of baseball operations Farhan Zaidi."This challenge is one I don't take lightly. The list of recalled hand sanitizers is growing. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has named dozens that contain methanol, which can cause blindness or hospitalizations if absorbed through skin.A consumer watchdog tells us these products are not FDA approved. That's because in March, the agency allowed companies that never made hand sanitizer to make it in order to meet demand. They just had to agree to follow the rules.“So, guess what happened? Some of them didn't follow the rules, either intentionally or unintentionally, and so then, they started getting reports from the poison control centers of people getting sick from methanol in hand sanitizer instead of ethanol,” said Teresa Murray with U.S. PIRG.Murray says many of the recalled products have been made in Mexico. But as part of the temporary guidelines, companies don't have to disclose where the sanitizers were manufactured. So, it's hard for consumers to tell which products might be dangerous.Murray says if you can't tell where the product was made, don't buy it and don't use it if it's already in your home. To be safe, stick with brand names you recognize for now.Murray has found most stores and online retailers have pulled products on the FDA list, but you should still be careful depending on where you shop.“I would caution anyone from buying anything that's on an end-cap clearance aisle, or anything that's from a super discount store,” said Murray. “There may be a reason why one of the mainstream retailers is no longer selling it.”Murray says it's always important to keep hand sanitizers out of reach for kids and pets, but now, even more so.If ingested, methanol can cause even more health problems.Click here to learn more from the FDA. 1738

The largest nutrition study in the world could change the way people eat as researchers indicate that your genes aren't the reason for your weight loss or gain.Susan Kim, 49, an Illinois mom, wife and teacher who was flat out fed up, and tired of struggling with her weight, a problem she's battled her whole life.“I was scrolling through my phone one day and I saw this study that I started reading- and I was intrigued,” Kim said.She admits she also wanted to prove a point to her husband of 20 years."He has maintained if I would only eat what he eats then my problems would be solved and there’s sugar in his food too and that’s a lie. That’s not the key,” Kim said.She signed up to be a part of The Predict Study commissioned by King’s College in London. A research team sent her everything she needed, including a box with a way to submit her blood, saliva and glucose.Researchers say the Predict study has allowed them to predict an individual's response to food.“The study showed us there’s no such thing as an average person-when it comes to food, we’re all different and unique and this is not something that food manufacturers or anyone else wants to tell you they want everyone to be the same,” Dr. Tim Spector, who is a senior researcher.Spector and his team of scientists gathered huge amounts of data, using Zoe, a data science company, and artificial intelligence to personalize nutrition.“The idea was to come up with enough information from research from very large studies around the world- and put it together in a format used in advertising and internet based procedures that would come up with algorithms that would tell an individual what the best way to eat is,” Spector said.The team worked off of probabilities, but they also have lots of new technology to use.“We can look at your gut microbes in a very detailed way,” Spector said. “We have glucose monitors that will tell you what your glucose level is. We’ve got finger prick tests people can do at home that will tell you what your blood fat is doing. We’ve got exercise monitors, sleep monitors and apps that record everything you’re doing and how you’re feeling every minute of the day.”There were identical twins in the study who had different responses to food. Hollywood actress Dame Emma Thompson also participated in the study."She has a big interest in health in general and as an actress, is always conscious of her health and her weight and wanted to find out more about nutrition,” Spector said about Thompson. “She claimed to have been on every diet under the sun and wanted to learn what the latest cutting-edge science was.”Spector says Thompson is doing well and is thoroughly enjoying what she's learning about her body. The personalized plans developed from the Predict study help you eat food that reduces inflammation. The Lee County Sheriff's Office says a Minnesota fugitive wanted for the murder of her husband is also responsible for a murder in Fort Myers Beach, Florida this week.Lee County Undersheriff Carmine Marceno said in a press conference Friday that they believe that Lois Reiss has since fled Southwest Florida to the Corpus Christi, Texas area.A national manhunt is under way for Reiss, who is considered armed and dangerous and should not be approached.Marceno says Reiss befriended 59-year-old Pamela Hutchinson and targeted her due to their similar appearance. Investigators say Reiss murdered Hutchinson in her?condo Monday, then took her ID and car and fled Southwest Florida in Hutchinson's white 2005 Acura TL with a Florida license plate Y37-TAA.Reiss is believed to have traveled through the Gulf coast to Corpus Cristi, Texas, but her current whereabouts are unknown.Reiss is wanted for Murder and Grand Theft.According to KLXT-TV in Rochester, Minnesota, Reiss is facing second degree murder charges there after shooting her husband to death back in March.According to the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension, Reiss’ car was found abandoned in Florida earlier this week and she remains at large.Law enforcement also believe she stole over ,000 from her deceased husband's business. 1347
