Democrats concluded the second day of opening arguments in the impeachment trial of President Donald Trump on Thursday.Thursday marked the second of three eight-hour sessions in which House impeachment managers will explain why they feel President Donald Trump should be removed from office. On Wednesday, lead impeachment manager Adam Schiff walked Senators step-by-step through Trump's dealings with Ukraine, in which Trump withheld foreign aid for weeks in the hopes that it would encourage new Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to open an investigation into one of his political rivals."(The president) does not, under our laws and under our constitution, have a right to use the powers of his office to corruptly solicit foreign aid, prohibited foreign aid, to help his re-election," Schiff said during his remarks Thursday.Watch Thursday's session below:Democrats claim Trump abused the power of his office by withholding military aid to Ukraine — a U.S. ally and a key part of the U.S.'s defense against Russia — in exchange for opening an investigation that would be politically advantageous to Trump.Trump pushed Zelensky to announce that publicly that Ukraine was opening an investigation into Hunter Biden — the son of Democrat presidential candidate Joe Biden — and his role as a board member for the Ukrainian energy company, Burisma. While he was vice president, Joe Biden pushed for the firing of Ukrainian prosecutor Viktor Shokin, who was investigating Burisma. Obama administration officials maintain Shokin's firing was consistent with the U.S.'s strategy of rooting out corruption in Ukraine. During part of his remarks on Wednesday, Schiff pushed for Republicans to approve witnesses following opening arguments by both sides. "You should want the whole truth to come out. You should want to know about every player in this sordid business. It is within your power to do so," Schiff said. When setting rules for the impeachment trial, Republicans declined to include scheduled time for witnesses. Following opening arguments, senators most vote to approve additional witnesses with a majority vote. The Republican caucus currently holds a 53-47 advantage over the Democrat caucus, meaning four Republican senators would need to break party lines to approve witnesses. The Democrats' opening arguments will continue Friday when the trial resumes at 1 p.m. ET.Alex Hider is a writer for the E.W. Days before a gun rights protest that is set to take place this weekend at the Virginia Capitol, Gov. Ralph Northam declared an emergency, which will ban protesters from entering the grounds around the Capitol with firearms. The emergency, which was declared by executive order, will span Friday, January 17 at 5:00 p.m. until Tuesday, January 21 at 5:00 p.m.“Law enforcement intelligence analysts have identified credible threats of violence surrounding the event, along with white nationalist rhetoric and plans by out-of-state militia groups to attend,” said a statement from Northam’s office. Northam tweeted that the order was to protect citizens and lawmakers. “We support citizens’ rights to peacefully protest and express their views to their elected officials. But we must also keep the public, as well as those who work around Capitol Square, safe,” the governor tweeted.Northam, a Democrat elected in 2018, now enjoys partisan support from the Virginia House and Senate. Following the 2019 election, Democrats have the majority in the Virginia House of Delegates for the first time in more than two decades. With Democrats holding the bicameral legislature, there has been a push to enact gun control. While a bill to ban assault weapons was dropped earlier this week, other bills are still being considered. One is limiting the purchases of firearms to one a month. Earlier this month, Northam signed legislation to prohibit firearms inside of the Capitol building and adjacent legislative office building. The law does not prohibit guns from the grounds near the Capitol, which is why Northam signed an executive order for this weekend. The response to gun legislation in Virginia has been swift, prompting an expected protest for this weekend. Many counties in Virginia have enacted “second amendment sanctuary” laws, also in response to Democratic proposals. 1885

Career diplomat George Kent told congressional investigators in his closed-door testimony this week that Rudy Giuliani asked the State Department and the White House to grant a visa to the former Ukrainian official who Joe Biden had pushed to have removed when he was vice president, according to four people familiar with Kent's testimony.Kent, the deputy assistant secretary of state for European and Eurasian affairs, testified that around January 2019 Giuliani requested a visa for former Ukrainian prosecutor-general Viktor Shokin to travel to the United States. Shokin had been pushed out of his position as Ukraine's top prosecutor in 2016 after pressure from Western leaders, including Biden, over concerns that he was not pursuing corruption cases.Giuliani has 782
