SEOUL, South Korea (AP) — North Korea announced that it has test-fired a new type of tactical guided weapon. The Korean Central News Agency says Chairman Kim Jong Un observed the firing of the weapon Wednesday by the Academy of Defense Science. The agency reports that Kim said “the development of the weapon system serves as an event of very weighty significance in increasing the combat power of the People’s Army.”The agency says Kim mounted an observation post to learn about the test-fire of the new-type tactical guided weapon and guide the test-fire.The announcement came after reports of new activity at a North Korean missile research center and long-range rocket site where the North is believed to build long-range missiles targeting the U.S. mainland. The White House said it was aware of the report and had no comment. The Associated Press could not immediately and independently verify North Korea’s claim. 925
SHAVER LAKE, Calif. (AP) — More than 200 people were airlifted to safety after a fast-moving wildfire trapped them in a popular camping area in California's Sierra National Forest. The California Office of Emergency Services said Black Hawk and Chinook helicopters were used for the rescues that began Saturday night and continued overnight. At least two people were severely injured and 10 more suffered moderate injuries. The Creek Fire exploded in size amid sweltering temperatures Saturday and chewed through extremely dry vegetation, cutting off evacuation routes to Mammoth Pool Reservoir. The area northeast of Fresno is a popular weekend getaway. 662
Some of the COVID-19 vaccine candidates call for more than one shot, so how do we make sure patients come back?Three experts all tell us preparing people for the side effects will be critical.A nursing researcher described those side effects in a JAMA article. She suspects she had the experimental vaccine as part of Pfizer’s Phase III clinical trials. After the second shot, she said she was light-headed, nauseous, had a headache, ran a fever, and was hardly able to lift her arm from muscle aches. She wasn't warned and it scared her into thinking she might have COVID-19.“The immune system is revving up,” said LJ Tan, Chief Strategy Officer at the Immunization Action Coalition. “It's responding to that vaccine, and I think we need to tell our patients that so that they expect that. Otherwise, they're going to say, ‘wow that thing hurt, I'm not coming back for that second dose.’”For comparison, a recent shingles vaccine also requires more than one dose and can be painful. Providers and advocates lead education efforts on what to expect. The return rate after the first shot for shingles is about 80%, which is considered high. One suggestion is to put information on side effects in COVID-19 vaccine distribution kits. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has already said it plans to include index cards that tell patients what they had and when their next dose is due. That's on top of electronic reminders like email or texts. The federal government has also promised to cover most costs for the vaccine. One doctor says he'd take that a step further.“I feel extremely strongly that we should do everything we can in terms of customized, personalized patient support programs, and even recommend that the federal government go beyond free and provide small rewards or incentives for people who complete the two-dose program,” said Dr. A. Mark Fendrick, Director of the University of Michigan's Center for Value-Based Insurance Design. There's some protection for people who only get one dose of the Pfizer vaccine, but nearly full protection is better. The second dose also boosts antibodies.“That's important because of waning immunity. The higher your antibodies when you start, the longer it takes for that to decrease over time, and potentially make you more susceptible,” said Dr. Gregory Poland, Director of the Mayo Clinic's Vaccine Research Group. That means the best thing is to get both doses as was tested in the study. 2463
SPRING VALLEY, Calif. (KGTV) -- Two teenagers were arrested Saturday in a sex trafficking investigation involving a 12-year-old girl. According to the San Diego County Sheriff’s Department, detectives found the girl on the 8500 block of Paradise Valley Road Saturday. The department says the 12-year-old was a runaway “who was possibly being sex trafficked.”The two 17-year-old boys were arrested for possession of firearms. “The Human Trafficking investigation is still developing and being handled by Human Trafficking Task Force,” the department added.Marisa Ugarte is the founder of 'Bilateral Safety Corridor Coalition' [BSCC]. For two decades, she has helped victims of human trafficking get back their lives. What startled her about this case was the age of the victim. "The average age that I have seen is 16 and 17. Some 15. Very few 14. But a 12-year-old? You can count them in your hand," Ugarte said. FBI studies show San Diego is one of the highest child sex trafficking areas in the nation. The reason: Tourism. "You have Comic-Con. We have a cyber patrol that we do. In three hours, we had 45 calls of buyers." Ugarte said. These patrollers look for potential buyers on the internet and intercept them before they prey on children. Another reason San Diego's human trafficking statistics are also high is the international aspect. The area's proximity to the border brings in large numbers of sex and labor trafficking. Human trafficking is a billion-dollar underworld operation, with victims so young and trapped, often out of desperation. Ugarte sent a message to the young victim. "Please don't disappear and become one girl on the milk carton. You do not know what is out there. Please. Just think about it. It's not worth it," Ugarte pleaded. If you or someone you know is a victim of human trafficking:Call the National Human Trafficking 24-Hour Hotline at (888) 373-7888. You can also text "HELP" to 233733. 1937
