(WNEP/CNN) -- A Pennsylvania mother and a father are charged with endangering the welfare of their two children in Lackawanna County.Investigators say the two children were knowingly left alone in the town of Dunmore for nearly three days while the mother was in Florida.Nicole Sciortino, 30, and Vincent Licciardello, 30, were both arraigned Monday morning on those neglect charges.Sciortino told police that she didn't realize it was against the law to leave her two children home alone unsupervised for an extended period of time and added that she, "didn't think it was really that bad."According to court papers, on Wednesday, March 7, Dunmore police responded to the home on Monroe Avenue after receiving a report of children who had been left alone for weeks.When officers arrived, they found a 10 year old and an 11 year old home by themselves. Police say the place was in deplorable condition, with food, boxes, pills, and other trash on the floor. The thermostat read 58 degrees.Police were able to contact the mother of the two children, Nicole Sciortino. She first told them she wasn't far away, but later admitted to police that she was in Florida. She told investigators that the children's father, Vincent Licciardello, who lives elsewhere, was watching the kids.During the investigation, police found that on Monday, March 5, Licciardello dropped the kids off at their mother's house early in the morning. Over the next three days, while their mother was in Florida, he would occasionally stop by to drop food off for the unsupervised children.WNEP-TV spoke with a few people who work in the area, who were floored to hear about the accusations.At the time of the investigation, police say one child had missed 16 days of school, while the other had missed 26 days since the start of the school year."That hurts. I'm a mom of five kids. I couldn't imagine leaving my kids for 10 minutes without an adult supervisor," said Tamra Murphy. "Who's feeding them? Who's washing their clothes? Who's making sure their homework is done? That upsets me beyond it. That hurts me.""That's insane to me," said Kaylia Riley. "I mean, at the end of the day, I couldn't even leave my dogs for three days by themselves, let alone children, especially small children. It's just mind-blowing."Sciortino and Licciardello were both charged Monday with endangering the welfare of children. (KGTV) — Recent wildfires that have been fueled by extreme weather conditions across California are already among the state's largest wildfires, burning a combined more than half a million acres.According to CalFire, the LNU Lightning Complex and SCU Lightning Complex fires are already the second- and seventh-largest wildfires in California history, respectively. Both fires are believed to have been caused by lightning strikes.The fires are two of more than 500 burning across the state as of Friday. Many of those fires were sparked by lightning strikes earlier this week.The LNU Lightning Complex sparked Monday just north of Napa and has burned 302,388 acres. That blaze was 15% contained Friday. The SCU Lightning Complex fire started Tuesday east of San Francisco and has burned 229,968 acres. As of Friday, it was 10% contained.Gov. Gavin Newsom says the blazes across the state are taxing California's firefighting capacity, but that assistance from 10 states is starting to arrive. CalFire Chief Mark Brunton pleaded with residents to leave their homes and not to battle the fires themselves, saying that could put more lives at risk.According to the Associated Press, more than 12,000 firefighters, helicopters, and air tankers were deployed Friday to battle wildfires throughout the state. 1311

Those should be sent no later Dec. 11 (for cards, letters and priority mail packages) and Dec. 18 (for priority mail express military service, available to most destinations.)USPS has also created military care kits, including several free postal items, to help send packages overseas. (KGTV) - Sentencing will continue next week for the man convicted of killing his former business partner along with the man’s wife and two young sons. A San Bernardino County jury recommended the death penalty in June 2019 for Charles “Chase” Merritt. The recommendation came after Merritt was found guilty in the deaths of Joseph McStay, his wife Summer, and their two sons, Gianni and Joey Jr. A sentence was expected to be delivered Friday. The hearing will now resume on Tuesday.The family was last seen at a Fallbrook home in February 2010. Investigators had few leads in the case, at one point believing the McStays had crossed the border into Mexico voluntarily. Merritt alerted authorities to the disappearance and filed a missing persons report. During his trial, which started in January 2019, prosecutors said Merritt had been forging checks linked to the business he shared with Joseph McStay. During Friday's sentencing, Merritt tried to fire his attorney, Rajan Maline, after returning from the court's lunch break. The defense had spent the morning giving several motions about new cell phone evidence. The prosecution had yet to have the chance to argue against the motions before Merritt moved to fire Maline mid-trial. The judge denied Merritt's request and allowed the defense to continue arguments for a new trial because of the new evidence and alleged misconduct by the prosecution. 1795
