NATIONAL CITY (KGTV) - National City mayor Ron Morrison is asking voters to change term limit rules to allow him to run for a fourth term in November.Morrison supports Measure B in next month's June 5 special election. Measure B would establish term limits for the mayor, city council, city clerk, and city treasurer. Officials could serve up to two four-year terms. However, it would essentially reset the clock, allowing Morrison to run in 2018 and 2022."If they want to keep the people in office that are in right now, whether it's the mayor, councilpeople, city clerk, city treasurer, they should have that right to be able to do that," Morrison said in an interview with 10News.National City voters passed Measure T in 2004, which imposed term limits only on the mayoral position, allowing three terms. Morrison was first elected Mayor in 2006.Opponents have put their own measure on the June ballot, Measure C. It would establish the same term limits, but count Morrison's time as mayor, meaning he could not run again.City councilmember Alejandra Soleto-Solis, who is running for mayor, supports Measure C, telling 10News it's time for new blood in the mayor's office. She opposes Measure B."It's one person trying to create a loophole for himself, at the cost of 3,000 for National City taxpayers," Soleto Solis said, referencing the cost for June's special election.Should both measures pass, the measure which receives the most votes will be enacted. 1476

NASA released data on Monday indicating that the polar ice cap around the North Pole shrank to near record-low levels last week following an arctic heat wave.The ice began to melt in earnest as Siberia was an estimated 14 to 18 degrees above normal during the spring.“It was just really warm in the Arctic this year, and the melt seasons have been starting earlier and earlier,” said Nathan Kurtz, a sea ice scientist at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Maryland. “The earlier the melt season starts, the more ice you generally lose.”The white color of ice causes sunlight to be reflected. But when the ice melts, the ground absorbs more sunlight, which causes the earth to heat up.2020 marked only the second time on record that the minimum sea ice dropped below 1.5 million square miles.“As the sea ice cover extent declines, what we’re seeing is we’re continuing to lose that multiyear ice,” said Mark Serreze, director of National Snow and Ice Data Center. “The ice is shrinking in the summer, but it’s also getting thinner. MILWAUKEE, WISCONSIN — A Milwaukee mother is livid that her 5-year-old son with autism was able to walk away from school. He was gone for about an hour and no one even knew he was missing until a stranger picked him up in a car."I can't believe my baby was out of the street and nobody had any idea that he was even missing," said the boy's mom Crystal Borzick.Her son, Blake Greenley, made it to the middle of busy Mill Road near 87th when a stranger spotted him trying to cross."His face was red," said Karen Stacy. "He was very cold. He was crying."Stacy said several cars slammed on their brakes when the boy darted across Mill Road to the median around 11 o'clock Thursday morning. She stopped and got out to try to find out what was wrong.Greenley has autism and does not usually speak to strangers. Stacy finally got him in her car and called the police. She was shocked to find no one reported him missing so she posted his picture on Facebook while she waited for officers.A friend of Borzick shared it with her on Facebook."That's the picture I got sent," said Crystal Borzick. "And as a mom, that made my stomach sink."She frantically called his school, Bruce Elementary."Nobody even has an idea that my son is missing from the school," said Borzick.Officers brought him back. When Crystal saw him she said she broke down."I cried," said Borzick. "I cried. I hugged him like I have never hugged him before. It was a relief sigh of relief, but it's also like I can't believe my baby was out of the street."She said she was told by the school her son might have left after lunch and that his regular teacher was out and a substitute was teaching.Milwaukee Public Schools gave a statement on the matter."We are grateful Blake was quickly found by a concerned community member and that he is safe. We are investigating this incident and, therefore, cannot comment further," said Andy Nelson, media manager for Milwaukee Public Schools."I have never been so scared in my life to know that anything could have happened to my child and nobody would have even known," said Borzick.She said Blake will not go to school tomorrow and she is not sure when he will return. 2198

Nearly 1.5 million Ford Focus vehicles in North America are being recalled because of a fuel system problem.The engines can stall without warning, the recall says. Cars included in the recall are 2012 to 2018 model years with 2-liter four-cylinder engines.The recall states a canister purge valve can malfunction. NATIONAL CITY, Calif. (KGTV) - A furnace door was not closed while the system was being operated at a South San Diego County crematorium Thursday, sending heavy smoke containing the ashes of human remains above the area.The problem was reported at 12:15 p.m. at the Cortez Family Crematorium at 100 W. 35th St in National City, near Interstate 5 and SR-54.National City Fire Captain Brian Krebs said the furnace was in use and the oven door was not shut, sending smoke out of the chimney and the open doors of the building.The building’s heat detectors activated the fire extinguishers, according to a funeral home employee. Firefighters said the extinguishers gave off a strong odor. There were human ashes in the smoke, Krebs confirmed. The plume moved east across National City Blvd. and Broadway toward the Best Buy and Walmart shopping center, according to a witness.Rick Hank, who identified himself as a crematorium operator and was working at the time of the incident, denied that human ashes were released. He told 10News it was impossible for the ashes to leave the system and said the system's maker would have to provide a detailed explanation as to why.The crematorium resumed operations Thursday afternoon.The San Diego Air Pollution Control District said there was no public health risk from the smoke. 1340
