SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The aircraft carrier USS Theodore Roosevelt will change its home port from San Diego to Bremerton, Washington, ahead of scheduled maintenance slated for next summer, the Navy announced Wednesday. The ship, which is currently deployed in the Western Pacific, will enter Puget Sound Naval Shipyard for scheduled maintenance known as docking planned incremental availability, or DPIA.Lt. Travis Callaghan said the maintenance required to maintain the Nimitz-class carrier's service life is more involved than what can be done pier- side in San Diego. DPIA involves putting the ship in drydock and will require facilities, equipment and personnel available in Bremerton, Callaghan said. The carrier recently resumed its scheduled deployment in the Indo- Pacific after spending months docked in Guam due to the widespread COVID-19 outbreak aboard the ship. The ship originally departed San Diego on Jan. 17 for a deployment, but was diverted to Guam on March 27 when the outbreak took hold, ultimately infecting more than 1,100 sailors, and killing one, Chief Aviation Ordnanceman Charles Thacker, 41.Navy officials said the carrier now operates with a new COVID-19 standard operating procedure, which modifies how crew members move through the ship, expands meal hours and establishes new social distancing procedures. 1337

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The Bengal tiger cub rescued during a smuggling attempt at the US-Mexico border was joined Monday by a Sumatran tiger cub from the National Zoo in Washington, D.C.The Bengal tiger was discovered last month at the Otay Mesa border crossing last month and taken to the San Diego Zoo Safari Park for care.RELATED: Smuggled tiger cub found at US-Mexico borderThe Sumatran tiger that joined the cub in San Diego is nine-weeks-old. He has been fed by humans since last month because his mother became aggressive toward him. Zoo personnel said the cub would "chuff" in a friendly tiger greeting but his mother, Damai, would not respond.Animal care staff from the Safari Park were on hand at San Diego International Airport to meet the cub and the keepers upon their arrival. The young tiger was immediately transported to the Safari Park’s Ione and Paul Harter Animal Care Center, where he will continue to receive the care he needs.“We are beyond thrilled to welcome this tiger cub to the Safari Park,” said Andy Blue, associate curator of mammals at the San Diego Zoo Safari Park. “His keepers reported he did extremely well during the flight — slept most of the way. Our priority now is to ensure he continues to thrive and acclimates well to his new surroundings.” 1302

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - San Diego County Treasurer-Tax Collector Dan McAllister reminded local residents today there is just one week remaining to reclaim more than 0,000 in tax refunds before the money enters the county's general fund.``The impacts of COVID-19 have left many families in need of money, so we want to return every cent available,'' McAllister said. ``Tell your friends, family, and coworkers to check the list on sdttc.com.''San Diegans can visit that website to see if their name is on the list of the 1,190 refunds that total 0,324. The average refund is 8.If a resident does find their name on the list, they can follow the instructions on the unclaimed money page to file a refund claim by October 26.If owed a refund, email the claim to refunds@sdcounty.ca.gov or call 1-877-829-4732 for more information. Anyone can sign up to receive emails when new unclaimed money lists are posted.``San Diegans have filed claims for only ,504 of this money since we posted the refund list in August, meaning 2,820 will be rolled over to the county's general fund if it is not claimed in the next week,'' said McAllister. The smallest refund amount available is , and the largest refund amount is ,111, owed to Amerus Life Insurance Co.Every year, the Treasurer-Tax Collector attempts to reunite San Diegans with money they have overpaid on taxes or fees. In the past five years, the office has refunded nearly 0,000.Current state law says countywide money that is unclaimed for three years and property tax refunds that are unclaimed for four years must be turned over to the county's general fund. 1632

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The county Board of Supervisors Tuesday unanimously approved a moratorium on evictions for both residents and small businesses located in the unincorporated area in the wake of the coronavirus outbreak. The policy, which was put forward in a resolution sponsored by Supervisors Nathan Fletcher and Kristin Gaspar, will give authority to the county's chief administrative officer to work with financial institutions to halt foreclosures and foreclosure-related evictions; and allow the county Housing Authority to extend the deadline for recipients, including those who receive Section 8 support.Fletcher said the proposal will provide relief for four months, up to May 31. The protections are provided retroactively to March 4, when Gov. Gavin Newsom proclaimed a state of emergency over the pandemic.Fletcher said the resolution "is a prudent step to protect folks in a period of economic distress."The supervisors voted remotely, abiding by the social distancing guidelines established by health officials to prevent further spread of the virus. County staff members, including Chief Executive Officer Helen-Robbins- Meyer, were in board chambers but kept their distance from one another. The county resolution does include one change, in terms of the amount of time renters have to inform their landlord about their economic situation, from 15 days to one week.Gaspar said that change will align the county with the city of San Diego's policy. She said that as a land owner and tenant, she's "sensitive to all sides of this proposal.""I believe we need to give the most vulnerable the tools they need," she added.Supervisor Dianne Jacob said while she fully supported the resolution, it was also important to protect landlords, and that she wanted to hear from rental property owners in her district. However well-intended, there can be unintended consequences from such a proposal to help renters, Jacob said. Before approving the resolution, supervisors heard from residents, most of whom were in favor.Real estate and property owner representatives said while they support relief for people in financial distress, it was also important to work with renters who could afford to pay. Mitch Thompson, of the Pacific Southwest Association of Realtors, said the resolution could impact between .5 billion and billion in rental income, and affect people like him and his wife. Thompson said they are retired, and rely on property income. He added that he didn't know if the county had "sat down with any property owners" before crafting the proposal. "I don't want to see anyone out on the street, either," Thompson said, adding the county should work to improve the resolution.Residents who offered input participated via an online meeting program or sent email comments. 2799
