With the surge in people buying above ground and inflatable pools, coupled with the fact that kids are spending nearly all their time at home now, the risk of drowning is up significantly. It’s the leading cause of death among young children.“A lot of that has to do with just the nature of those toddlers. They are impulsive. They are quick. They're just built to explore and they're not great at following rules or understanding limits. And for them water is a fascinating thing and if they can find it, they will, and they're going to try and get in it,” said Dr. Ben Hoffman, pediatrician with AAP Council on Injury, Violence and Poison Prevention.Hoffman says a locking fence around the entire pool can cut the risk of drowning by half. If you don’t have a fence for inflatable pools, emptying them out is best. For above ground, he suggests removing the ladder.Swim lessons also can decrease the risk of drowning. But nothing replaces the constant, within arm’s length, non-distracted adult supervision.“You have to have somebody designated as a water watcher,” said Sophia Brizeus, whose daughter drowned in pool. “Make sure they are watching the kids in the water because like I said, this can happen to anybody and it only takes a second, it only takes a second.”Brizeus started the Love Bug Foundation in memory of her daughter Soraya, who was almost 2 years old when she drowned while they were visiting with family one Sunday afternoon. The toddler just slipped away and into the pool, even with adults around.Soraya was even supposed to start swim lessons a week later.Brizeus is now educating other parents about water safety through Facebook and Instagram accounts.“What I’ve learned about the drownings is it’s not like the movies at all. It happens quick. It’s silent and a child can be with a room full of people and it still happens,” said Brizeus. 1874

in Arizona over the weekend.Officers with the Prescott Police Department responded to a report of a disorderly female wearing a wedding dress who tried to assault an employee at a local business.Once police contacted a group of people at the location, officers say 32-year-old Eric Cordova became aggressive and refused to cooperate. He allegedly fought with the officer and both fell to the ground. During the struggle, several people that were with Cordova began to assault the officer and refused to obey commands, according to the department.Additional officers arrived on scene and eventually gained control of the group.Among them was 30-year-old Ashely Jordan, who was still wearing her wedding dress. Jordan and Cordova apparently had gotten married earlier in the day, police said. Two officers suffered minor injuries from the incident. The following people were arrested and booked into the Yavapai County Jail:Eric Cordova, 32-year-old Chino Valley resident – Aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer, resisting arrest and disorderly conduct.Ashely Jordan, 30-year-old Chino Valley resident – Aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer, resisting arrest, and disorderly conductDustin Trout, 31-year-old Tempe resident – Aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer, disorderly conduct, obstruction of justiceAmos Puckett, 25-year-old Nevada resident – Obstruction of justice and disorderly conductPolice say two other men were also cited and released from the scene for charges of disorderly conduct. This story was originally published by KNXV. 1571

at a local Walmart and determined that he is not a threat.According to the police department, a man between 50-60 years old with gray-black hair and a goatee approached a sales clerk Wednesday evening in the sporting goods department and asked the clerk if you could sell him "anything that would kill 200 people."The police identified the man as Philip Michael Attey II. The clerk told Attey that his comment wasn't funny."I know," the man said. He then repeated the question to the clerk."During his interview with detectives, Philip Attey II informed police that he is an anti-gun activist and that he believes that his statements made to the Walmart clerk in front of a customer only helps his cause which is for Walmart to stop selling firearms," the St. Lucie Police said in a statement."At this time, it doesn’t appear that Mr. Attey II is an immediate threat. This is an ongoing investigation," the statement concluded. This story was originally published by 968
