SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A teacher at Shoal Creek Elementary School in Carmel Mountain is being honored as the 10News Classroom Hero.Throughout her teaching career, Lisa Ransom's message to her first graders has been: aim high and give back. “My goal for them is to see what they can do and to put away what they can’t do and work on moving forward,” said Ransom. In her first grade class, she puts extra emphasis on reading and writing, skills she believes are crucial for the children's future and development. “Knowing they are able to read is one thing but knowing that they are able to read to understand and read to learn, and to write to communicate ideas and thoughts. It’s something that is going to carry them throughout their lives,” said Ransom. Ransom’s love for her students is why Cate O’Reilly, a parent who has had three of her children in Mrs. Ransom’s class throughout the years, nominated Lisa Ransom as our Classroom Hero. “Everything she does is really about building up their self-esteem and helping them navigate through this tricky first grade,” O'Reilly said. But it’s her student’s excitement to learn that motivates her to teach for years to come. “I start to tear up because it just means so much to me. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A World War II veteran is being honored not only for his service to our country but to the San Diego community.With the help of former students, current students, and staff at Hilltop High School in Chula Vista, the library was dedicated to World War II veteran Tom Rice. The lifelong Coronado resident was an Army paratrooper in the 101st Airborne Division on D-Day. He was the first to jump out of his C-47 after it crossed the English Channel.RELATED: Retired Chula Vista teacher grateful for war hero's inspirationRice taught U.S. government in the Sweetwater Union High School District for more than 30 years, mostly at Hilltop High.The surprise was unveiled to Rice on Thursday. "Everyone has given me their grace, and I have nothing to return but just my presence, and that was it. The two women say Rice didn't talk about the war when he was a teacher; it wasn't until years later they learned of his bravery. "We are honored to know him and honored by what he did for us as students and what he did for our country," said Cappos Hardy.Rice is well known for returning to Normandy to reenact his D-Day jump in honor of those who never made it home. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A San Diego police officer was involved in a shooting outside a music venue in downtown San Diego just before 7 p.m. Saturday.San Diego Police Lt. Mike Holden said that a white man in his thirties was acting violently on top of a vehicle hood on the corner of W. Ash Street and India Street.The man was only wearing pants and did not have a shirt or shoes on and was standing on the hood of a car yelling at the driver, police said. A police officer tried to take the man into custody and used a Taser, which did not subdue him. Police said the man continued to act violently.The officer then fired one shot, which did not hit anybody."The officer continued to struggle with the suspect," said Lt. Mike Holden of the San Diego Police Department. "At one point during the struggle the officer feared for his life. The officer fired one round from his handgun, but missed the suspect."The suspect, Brent Zadina, 30, was taken into custody and transported to a hospital for observation. Police do not believe Zadina was armed.The officer sustained minor injuries but was not taken to the hospital, Holden said. Police are investigating the incident near the Music Box. The roads were closed nearby for the investigation but have since reopened.This is a developing story. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - An El Centro teacher was arraigned Tuesday after she was accused of providing marijuana and alcohol to students on a school camping trip.Monique Garcia, 50, faces two felony charges and three misdemeanor charges garnering a maximum sentence of 8 years and 4 months in state prison, according to the District Attorney's Office.Deputy District Attorney Stephen Marquardt said a 17-year-old student on the trip gave Garcia a ride to a grocery store where she bought alcohol and then drove to a dispensary where she bought cannabis, including edibles.Marquardt said students were intoxicated and became sick after consuming the alcohol and/or cannabis.According to the Southwest High School website, Garcia was head of the math department. The Central Union High School District sent a statement to 10News reading in full: "In order to protect the integrity of the judicial process, Central Union High School District does not comment on ongoing or pending proceedings. Monique Garcia is no longer employed by the District. Due to the sensitive nature of the allegations the District will continue to respect the privacy of all those involved."Southwest High School's Outdoor Adventure Club went on a three-day camping trip in February of 2019, according to the Imperial Valley Press.IVP named Garcia as the head adviser of the club and stated she was on that trip with 29 students.The trip took place, according to IVP, at the Laguna Campground from Feb. 15-18.This is the first criminal case resulting from the newly formed Student Safety in School Systems Task Force, under the San Diego County District Attorney.Garcia will be in court for a preliminary hearing June 18.A restraining order was filed, to keep Garcia from contacting 18 individuals, whom Marquardt said she texted before and after the trip.A LinkedIn profile with the same name lists Garcia as a teacher at Southwest High School from August 2008 - present and at Gompers Charter Middle School from August of 2006 - June of 2007.The San Diego Unified School District confirmed Garcia worked at Crawford High School from Sept. 28, 2007 to June 30, 2008. 2143

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A University City man is hoping to warn others after someone with a BB gun shot him during his daily jog.On Tuesday, 70-year-old Taurone was nearing the end of his daily three-mile jog northbound on University Town Center Drive just after 6 p.m."Very calm, enjoying the evening. Hardly any traffic out in the neighborhood," said Taurone.On the sidewalk near the Renaissance Towne Center, his calm jog was suddenly interrupted by pain."Jogging along and felt a sharp sting in the lower portion or my chin, so I stopped. It felt like an extremely large pimple. I was pushing on it, and something round and hard came out of my skin fell onto the ground," said Taurone.A stunned Taurone, who didn't have his glasses, didn't look for the apparent BB pellet."When I realized I what it was, and that I had been shot, I was very angry," said Taurone.Taurone, who was shot on the right side of his face, believes the shot came from the shopping center area. He briefly scoured the area but didn't see anyone. Bleeding from his chin, he jogged home. He's doing fine now, but he's still upset."If the shot had been 6 to 8 inches higher, it would have hit me in the eye," said Taurone.Taurone has no clue about a motive, but he knows he was the intended target."Makes sense because I was the only moving target in the area," said Taurone.Taurone has been interviewed by police, who told him they haven't received reports of similar incidents in the area. He's now worried about what may happen next, because of the boldness of the attack.
