LA MESA, Calif. (AP) — A man who police say brandished a gun from a van and a woman who then crashed the car with five children inside, injuring them, have been arrested. A person on Friday night reported that a man in La Mesa had a gun inside a moving vehicle. Police say an officer later tried to stop the vehicle, but the driver refused to pull over. Shortly thereafter, the car crashed. The officer pursuing the suspect found five children inside without car seats. Police say the children suffered minor injuries and were taken to a hospital for further tests. 573

One non-profit group of dedicated veterinarians, is helping make sure these "street dogs" are getting the care they need, much to the relief of their human companions.Shannon Arakaki is doing her best to comfort her dog Rocky, as he gets his ear drained. After all, she says he's always been there to comfort her."Oh yeah there's been some ups and downs," said Arakaki. "Lived in my truck you know we stay at my truck off and on right now."When Rocky hurt his ear, Arakaki had no idea how she'd deal with it."I don't have the money to go to a vet and this is my only option right now unless you know I'm going to sell my truck," said Arakaki. "I can't do that I'm not going to go live in a tent."That's where one group of veterinarians come in. They are treating Rocky for free."This is phenomenal," Arakaki said. "Because it's so hard and when you're at the point where you don't really have any money and you're trying just basically to survive. They come before you."With just a table and supplies these vets are caring for the pets of people who are homeless or near homeless. They call themselves the Street Dog Coalition, setting up care centers on streets around the country, or in this case, at a shelter."We are not doing major surgeries," said Dr. Jon Geller, who founded the Street Dog Coalition. "We're not doing x-rays but we have to use our x-ray vision which just means a lot of best guessing going on."Dr. Geller says it not only helps pets stay healthy, but also tears down barriers for people who already have enough up."What do you do for a job interview?" Dr. Geller said. "What do you do for a job? There's no doggie daycare and they can't get on the bus and staying over night in shelters but that's in most cases it won't happen."Dr. Geller says sometimes the homeless are judged for having pets, but not here."They will feed their pets first," Dr. Geller said. "So they live pretty good lives and these owners are pretty committed and I think that we should be supportive of their efforts to have pets."They are helping preserve relationships that go beyond mere companionship."Without having somebody for me to give a damn about I may not care about myself as much," Arakaki said. 2324

LAKESIDE, Calif. (KGTV) -- Nearly 200 people turned out for a vigil in Lakeside honoring two teenagers killed in a car accident last weekend. Isaac Culkin and Justin Kyte were killed on Saturday, Jan. 11 when the car they were riding in crashed into a tree. Two others in the car suffered moderate injuries, but survived. Those closest to the boys gathered at the scene of the crash for a candlelight vigil, a moment of silence and prayer. The teens' closest friends remembered them as hardworking, funny boys who loved to have fun offroading the desert. CHP says Kyte was behind the wheel when he lost control of the car and hit a tree on Willow Road. Culkin was in the passenger seat. CHP says speed was a factor, but it is unclear if drugs or alcohol were involved. Services for Culkin are scheduled Thursday, January 23rd. Information on Kyte's services have not been made public. LEMON GROVE, Calif. (KGTV) - Deputies are searching for a suspect who shot and killed one man and sent another to the hospital in Lemon Grove Saturday night. The shooting happened just after 8 p.m. near the intersection of Main Street and Olive Street. According to the San Diego County Sheriff’s Department, deputies were flagged down and, when they got to the scene, discovered the two men suffering from gunshot wounds. Both men were rushed to the hospital where one of the victim’s died. The victim was identified Monday as 29-year-old Henry Weaver. At this time, deputies don’t have any suspect information. 621

Las Colinas Detention Center is getting accolades for their progressive design in Architectural Digest Magazine.The women's Santee facility opened in August of 2014. It has no bars, barbed wire. There's lots of palm trees, flowers and grass, all taken care of by the inmates. Here, they say, is opportunity to change your life."I was a month and a half pregnant when I got arrested, so I spent my whole pregnancy in jail, I gave birth in jail, she's with my parents, she's almost four years old," Kanya Arredondo said of her daughter Danya.She was locked up for a 5 year sentence for transporting illegal drugs."I missed everything, her first words, her first walking...I get 2-3 visits per week with her on the video screen," at Las Carolinas Kanya says they have a "Facetime machine".She said the atmosphere at the new facility allowed her to have a connection with her daughter, and the deputies who encouraged her to change.She's been taking classes, learned English and is on the Dean's List. She has a job ready when she gets out in 34 days."I don't ever want to come back to this place, even though, it's jail, and a lot of positive things came out of here, I still don't want to come back, at least as an inmate," she said she volunteered to start a Spanish book club to help other inmates follow her path to rehabilitation.Another inmate, Holly Combs, transitioned from the old facility to the new one as well."It's like a fight or flight situation... It's amazing how the trauma you just got used to it," Holly said referring to fights and drugs overtaking the cells.She said it all started when she lost her brother during a robbery. She felt responsible and turned to drugs, landing her behind bars. "My behavior started changing, i started taking every class, I take college courses here I'm on the dean's list and have a 4.0," she said.Her life changed when she came to Las Colinas' new facility."It just took someone to believe in me you know?" Holly said. She's out in about 50 days and has a job ready on the outside."There's a lot of programs here, if you want it you can have them... I could cry, I owe a lot to this place I really do.. I didn't think I could change and the whole way I think is different now." She said.According to the Sheriff's Department, inmate on inmate violence has been reduced by 56% since the new location opened.  2413
