RIVERSIDE, Calif. (AP) — Police say a man who was suspected of burglarizing a vehicle was fatally hit by another car as he fled the Southern California scene. The 35-year-old man allegedly stole property from a car in Riverside, California, around 9:30 p.m. Thursday. The man's name has not been released. Authorities say the vehicle’s owner confronted the man, who ran away while discarding the items from the car. As he fled, the man tripped and fell into the path of a 2014 Mitsubishi Outlander. Police say the Outlander struck the man, who later died at a hospital. The Outlander’s driver was not injured and is cooperating with police. 648

(AP) — California's economy has surpassed that of the United Kingdom to become the world's fifth largest, according to new federal data made public Friday.California's gross domestic product rose by 7 billion from 2016 to 2017, surpassing .7 trillion, the data said. (AP) — A California affiliate of the National Rifle Association has asked a U.S. judge to block a new law requiring background checks for anyone buying ammunition.The California Rifle & Pistol Association asked San Diego-based U.S. District Judge Roger Benitez to halt the checks and related restrictions on ammunition sales.Voters approved tightening California's already strict firearms laws in 2016. The restrictions took effect July 1.The gun owners' association challenged the ammunition background checks in a lawsuit filed last year and on Monday asked for an injunction, alleging it violates the Second Amendment right to bear arms.RELATED: New ammunition law requires background checksThe lawsuit has been joined by out-of-state ammunition sellers and California residents, including Kim Rhode, who has won six Olympic shooting medals and is trying to become the only person to win seven medals at seven consecutive Games."The scheme purports to funnel everyone seeking to exercise their Second Amendment right to acquire ammunition into a single, controlled source, an in-state licensed vendor, for the purpose of confirming purchasers' legal eligibility to possess ammunition and to keep track of all purchases," lawyer Sean Brady wrote. "While making sure dangerous people do not obtain weapons is a laudable goal for government, California's scheme goes too far and must be enjoined."The motion raised concerns about identification requirements and high rates of denials among ammunition buyers undergoing the new background checks. Gavin Newsom has criticized Benitez's lifting of the state's ban on magazines holding more than 10 bullets, saying he is confident it will be reinstated by the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals.Attorneys with San Francisco-based Giffords Law Center to Prevent Gun Violence anticipated that Benitez is likely to block the ammunition restrictions, but the law would eventually be upheld on appeal."Unfortunately this may be the one judge in the country" willing to rule that "people should be able to buy unlimited quantities of ammunition without background checks," staff attorney Ari Freilich, who directs the organization's California legislative affairs, said prior to the filing.Gun owner groups have been pinning their hopes on a more conservative U.S. Supreme Court. Robert Davis, 70, faces criminal charges after he was caught in South Florida allegedly using a device that concealed his license plate while driving past toll stations, WPLG-TV reported. For the last 18 months, social media users have been posting videos of a Chrysler van driving past toll stations with a concealed license plate. Until last week, Florida Highway Patrol was unable to find the van. But on Saturday, an off-duty Florida Highway Patrol officer finally spotted the van near Homestead, Fla. "I kind of realized that is the guy and I had to call it in," Lieutenant Alejandro Camacho told WPLG. "And then troopers came and stopped him and made an arrest. "Florida Highway Patrol officials allege that Davis used a remote control that drops a cover over the license plate to conceal the license plate. It is unclear how many times Davis allegedly used the device. Davis was arrested on charges of organized fraud, cheating and petty theft, WPLG said.  1006

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) — A highly decorated U.S. Forest Service police dog suffered nine stab wounds during a marijuana raid in Northern California. But he survived after he was airlifted to a veterinary clinic. What's more, it's the second time the dog, named Ice, recovered after being seriously injured. The agency said Friday that Ice was wounded late last month in the Klamath National Forest south of the Oregon border. He kept hold of the suspect even after he was stabbed. A helicopter flew Ice to a veterinary clinic in Medford, Oregon. The agency says Ice had multiple stab wounds that were more severe during a similar raid in 2016. 652
