CHULA VISTA (CNS) - A man wanted on suspicion of killing his wife Sunday is believed to be on the run in the San Diego area, police said.The suspect was identified as Francisco Uriarte, 37, who is suspected in the death of his wife at an apartment in the 500 block of Oxford Street, according to Lt. Dan Peak of the Chula Vista Police Department.Chula Vista police were called to the address at 1:38 a.m. Sunday after a report of a domestic violence in progress, Peak said."Upon arrival, officers located three children at the residence," Peak said. "Officers were told (by) the children their mother and father had been in a physical fight."The children also told officers their dad had fled the scene and believed he killed their mother during the fight," Peak said. "The children were not injured from the incident and are currently safe in protective custody."The victim's identity is being withheld pending notification of her family, Peak said."Francisco should be considered armed and dangerous," Peak said. He was last seen wearing a large black overcoat, shorts and flip-flops, he said.The suspect is also believed to have significant injuries to his hands and may try to seek medical attention, Peak said.Uriarte is 5-feet-9-inches tall, 190 pounds with brown hair and brown eyes, Peak said. CHULA VISTA (KGTV) -- A nearly million dollar grant was recently awarded to the Chula Vista Elementary School District to focus on Science Technology Engineering and Math Programs.Some parents noticed the recipients of the grant were all schools in the east side of Chula Vista.“It’s not equal,” one dad told ABC 10News. He didn’t want to use his name, but both of his children attend a school on the west side of Chula Vista.“They need to find the exact same thing that covers the west side schools,” he said.The Military-Connected Student Academic and Support Program grant—which is 0,000—is a five-year commitment to STEM, according to a news release from the district.The schools that will be receiving that grant money included:- Enrique S. Camarena Elementary-Corky McMillin Elementary-Saburo Muraoka Elementary-Olympic View Elementary-Wolf Canyon ElementaryAll the schools are in the Otay Ranch area.Matthew Tessier, the Assistant Superintendent for Innovation and Instruction, said the schools were chosen based on the number of military families.“Part of the grant application is there needed to be 10 percent or higher military-connected children at the school and we picked our top five military-connected schools,” Tessier said. District spokesperson Anthony Millican said the requirement was set by the Department of Defense and no schools on the west side meet the requirement for the grant. There are 12 schools in the district that have more than 12 percent of enrollment identified as military-connected students, according to the district website.“We’re really cognizant of supporting our military-connected children because I think a lot of times we forget that they have a lot of unique needs… whether their parents are deployed, whether they have one parent leading a household for multiple months,” Tessier added.According to numbers given to ABC 10News by a district spokesperson, there are more than 1,000 military-connected students in the five schools that received the grant. 30 percent of Wolf Canyon’s population are military-connected students, which is the highest in the district.Camarena, Muraoka, and Olympic View all reported more than 20 percent of their students as military-connected. McMillin Elementary was at 19 percent.The school district’s project is calling “STEAMing into the Health Sciences.” The grant will allow participating schools to have the opportunity to attend the district’s Health Station, which is the latest in a series of hands-on learning stations creating with community partners.The participating schools will also have access to an online platform to introduce students to industry professionals, host weekly after-school STEM programs for select military-connected fourth graders, as well as provide a 1-week long summer camp for some military-connected students.Tessier said the Health Station experience will not be limited to the schools who received the grant. “We are committed—all means all. (KGTV) – The Chula Vista Elementary School District’s administration team held a virtual meeting Friday morning that provided families with details on the district’s potential reopening plan.District officials said their plan is to ease students back in and give families the option to continue to learn virtually, on campus, or through a hybrid program.The first four weeks of the 2020-21 school year, scheduled to begin Aug. 31, will be online. After that period of distance learning, the district will assess the situation; allowing for a possible return to in-class instruction will depend on the level of active coronavirus cases in San Diego County.Superintendent Dr. Francisco Escobedo said a lot of prep work and planning has gone into the district's plan to reopen.During Friday’s meeting, he said, “We want our children to come back because we want in-person instruction. We believe it’s the best type of instruction there is, but we need to come back in a safe manner.”When students do make their return to school, campuses will look very different. The district spent millions of dollars on safety measures, including large sensors that take temperature and dispense sanitizer, large signs, personal protective equipment, and plexiglass dividers."We’ll have signage throughout the school depicting the type of behaviors we expect,” Escobedo added.According to Escobedo, the district has partnered with local company Kahala Bioscience to help conduct routine COVID-19 testing and identify ways to mitigate the spread of the virus.Escobedo said students will return when the county is at a low to medium risk for COVID-19, and when they do, only half of the students will be allowed back on campus with priority for those in K-3 grades.While digital learning is in place for the first few weeks of the school year, campuses will be used for child care through the YMCA, so teachers can utilize that service while in class.In preparation for digital learning, the district is still offering laptops to those who need them. The district has also worked with the city to disperse over 400 internet hotspots throughout Chula Vista.The district also wants parents to provide feedback during the digital learning period so they can access what's working and not working and relay that information to families. 2341

Chobani is the latest company this year to raise its minimum wage to an hour.In a press release, Chobani's CEO and Founder Hamdi Ulukaya announced on Monday that the change would happen during the first quarter of 2021."This moment of uncertainty is a call for us to join together to strengthen communities and support those working tirelessly to make the food on the tables of families across America," said Ulukaya in the news release. "Businesses should serve the people and communities in which they operate. CHULA VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) -- Homeowners in Eastlake are frustrated with a plan to develop a storage facility near their homes. The proposed location is in an empty space between Eastlake High School and Antigua, a gated community of townhomes. The facility would be a recreational storage facility, for boats, cars and containers. The City of Chula Vista's planning department would have to approve the proposal. Homeowners are hoping they don't. Neighbors like Carmen Bermen say the plans are going to lower their property values and attract the wrong crowd. On Saturday, they started posting warning flyers around their community to warn other neighbors. Bermen was the first homeowner to notice the plans. She says the city had sent out two notices in 2016. The last notice arrived on Thanksgiving week. 10News obtained a copy of that notice letting homeowners know they had until November 26th to send in any written comments or petitions. The vote would take place on November 27th. After emailing the city, residents say officials told them they'd have a public hearing in January on the issue, instead of voting on it in closed session. 10News reached out to the city for comment on this issue, a spokesperson told us it's up to the planning department to put the item on the agenda for the community to go and express their concerns during public comment.
