DETROIT — The Detroit Free Press/Chemical Bank Marathon is the only International Marathon in the United States.Crossing the U.S.-Canadian border is the highlight for many runners, but this year two marathoners crossed another major threshold during the 26.2-mile run.Whitney Black and Steven Phillips started the Detroit Free Press/Chemical Bank marathon engaged, and sealed the deal halfway to the finish line.What’s even more mind blowing than a mid-marathon wedding is that no one thought Black would ever be able to walk down the aisle, let alone run. She was seriously injured in an accident more than 10 years ago and then hit by a car while running 18 months ago."Twenty-one surgeries in total, (Black) was told she may never walk again," says McCann Black, Whitney's brother. "I’m just so proud of her, watching her set these goals and then blow through them has helped our family a great deal."Today, 13.1 miles into her very first full marathon, Black married her “sole mate,” Phillips. Phillips, by the way, has had quite a journey of his own, losing around 100 pounds.Friends and family waited near the 13.1 mile marker with balloons, a veil, rings and an officiant until Black and Phillips ran up to the makeshift altar."I promise to trust you even when we deviate from our grocery list," Black vowed."I will choose you every day, not because I have to, but because I want to," Phillips said.Their vows were short and sweet. The ceremony lasted about five or six minutes. The couple said getting married in the midst of their first marathon was a perfect setting for their relationship."We challenge each other to do better in every way," Black said, then she toasted her new husband with a shot of Gatorade and the two rejoined the race.  Crossing the finish line as husband and wife and committing to stay by each other's side for the long run."To see my baby sister getting married, it’s a lot to take in, but I’m just so happy for her," Black's brother said. 2044

(KGTV) - This weekend 47 teams from high schools around San Diego and other parts of the US will compete in the FIRST California Robotics Regional Championships.The event brings the teens together to test their engineering and science skills. The teams get six weeks to design and build a robot to complete a handful of tasks.But the technology isn't cheap, so many teams turn to local tech companies for donations.San Diego based tech-giant Qualcomm is the title sponsor of the competition. They also give money to individual teams. Organizers say the companies see it as a way to excite teens about careers in STEM."They look at this as their future workforce," says Regional Director David Berggren. "If we can get these kids invested in STEM fields now, they're going to be great future employees, and it's money well spent for the company."The actual dollar amounts aren't given, but some schools say companies donate thousands of dollars each year. Logos on t-shirts and team booths show companies like Apple, Qualcomm, Viasat, 3M, Solar Turbines, BAE Systems, leidos and more have made donations.In addition to the money, companies donate time, providing volunteers to mentor the teens through the design and building process. They work hands on with the teams, giving kids an up close look at careers in STEM fields."It's eye-opening, it's surreal," says Southwest High School Senior Alejandro Gendrop. "To not only have someone aid us with how we're supposed to organize our team, put it together, but also to get a view into the industry and how they work and how similar our work is to theirs, it's great."The competition in Del Mar is Friday and Saturday, and admission is free. DETROIT (AP) — Metal fragments from an exploding air bag inflator have killed the driver of an older model Volvo, touching off a U.S. recall of as many as 54,124 cars. The inflators in this case were made by auto parts supplier ZF/TRW, but U.S. government documents show they perform similarly to deadly inflators made by Takata. The recall covers Volvo S60 and S80 cars from 2001 through 2003 model years. Volvo said it will replace the driver’s air bag at no cost to customers.The U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said Saturday that it’s reviewing data with Volvo about other vehicles with the inflators and will decide on further action. ZF/TRW didn't immediately respond to messages left Saturday asking about whether the inflators were sold to other automakers. The federal agency says the Volvo inflator rupture is the only known incident worldwide. Japanese parts maker Takata used ammonium nitrate to create a small explosion to inflate air bags in a crash. But the chemical can deteriorate over time when exposed to moisture in the air. The explosion can blow apart a metal canister and hurl shrapnel into the passenger compartment.At least 26 people have been killed worldwide by the inflators, including 17 in the United States.The problem caused the largest series of auto recalls in U.S. history, with at least 63 million inflators recalled. As of September, more than 11.1 million had not been fixed, according to the U.S. government. About 100 million inflators have been recalled worldwide.NHTSA said Saturday that the ZF/TRW inflators did not use ammonium nitrate to inflate the air bags.Over the summer, Volvo recalled more than 2 million cars worldwide for another issue. DETROIT — A clash between Detroit police and protesters was caught on camera Sunday night.Video shared on Twitter shows a group of protesters marching near Waterman and Vernor Highway in Detroit. The peaceful demonstrators surrounded a police cruiser, which pulls forward and into a group of protesters.Some protesters jumped onto the hood of the vehicle as it pulled forward.Leo Alvarado, who was at a nearby gas station, witnessed the altercation."Just so happened to be getting out with my wife when we heard a bunch of screaming and turned around, and cops were plowing through the crowd or started to drive through the crowd," Alvarado said. "Craziness. I've never seen anything like that in my life. Hopefully never again have to see anything like that."Alvarado said a medic treated cuts and wounds that were on demonstrators' arms. DESCANSO, Calif. (KGTV) -- Firefighters Wednesday battled a house fire near Descanso that spread to nearby brush. According to Cal Fire, the blaze started on the 24000 block of Sherilton Valley Road in the area of Cedar Creek. Part of the home became involved in the fire before flames spread to nearby brush, scorching two acres.
