SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — With bars that don’t serve food shut down as of Wednesday, some employees may be finding themselves in need of unemployment benefits just days after they stopped collecting them.Some San Diego County bars got just 19 days to operate before they were shuttered again, but that’s plenty of time for employees to have their unemployment benefits lapse.The good news is that individuals don’t have to start entirely from square one.REBOUND: Search for job openings in San Diego County “It should be less time-consuming this go around,” said Andrew Picard with the San Diego Workforce Partnership, a local non-profit agency that supports job-seekers with training, but is not in charge of processing unemployment benefits.It turns out, if you stop certifying for unemployment benefits for even one week, your claim goes inactive and must be reopened.The state suggests reopening a claim on UI Online, which can be done at any time. That's because the coronavirus pandemic is causing a national coin shortage.Money is money. But right now, paper is not as valuable as metal for Pacific Beach resident, Michele Pagnano."I go through a good amount of change on a regular basis," Pagnano said.He uses his apartment complex's coin laundry about three to four times a week. So when he was running low on coins, he headed to the bank, like he always does."Three weeks ago, I was at Wells Fargo," Pagnano said. "I wanted to get worth [of quarters] so that it could hold me over for a couple of weeks. And the teller says she could only give me . I went around to a few more banks, and they all had that same practice in place."There's a reason for that. The Federal Reserve says there is a coin shortage caused by the pandemic. Weeks ago, the US Mint reduced coin production to protect its employees from the virus. Plus, with more people shopping online or using touch-less payment methods, cash, especially coins, is not circulating like it use to."If there's none in circulation, it becomes a toilet paper panic again, just like at the beginning of the pandemic," Pagnano said.But Pagnano says he was not going to give up on clean clothes that easily."I even went around to a couple of laundry mats to try to get some quarters from them," Pagnano. "None of them were allowing you to take the quarters off the premises. One guy even told me that he only had in circulation for their entire laundry mat."He also went on Facebook to see if any of his neighbors can do a swap. He even contacted his landlord for help."I already reached out to the landlord and asked if we could buy back the quarters that are already in the machines," Pagnano said. "Hopefully, that is something we can make happen to alleviate the problem, at least for our complex."His last resort? On a whim, Pagnano says he walked into San Diego County Credit Union, which is just down the street from his home. To his surprise, he got lucky."We got the million-dollar quarters right here!" SAN DIEGO (KGTV)- A border church and border mosque are calling for a day of unity. A Bi-National Day of Prayer will be held at Friendship Park; a place where families on both sides of the U.S. Mexico border can meet. The group is also releasing a short film to encourage federal leaders to keep Friendship Park open. The film is called “A Prayer Beyond Borders.”“Friendship Park is the only place on the U.S. Mexico border, where families who have been separated by U.S. immigration policy, can come together,” says Dustin Craun with CAIR San Diego. Families “can physically be together.”Worshippers have been holding prayers there every week since 2011. “We can pray together when we can come together. We can break bread together,” says Imam Taha Hassane, with the Islamic Center of San Diego. Worshippers say there have been threats to close Friendship Park, but no action was ever taken. They are hoping their continued presence will show federal leaders they need this space open. “Millions of families in the United States and Mexico have no access to each other at all,” says Craun. “Closing friendship park would close any possibility of them being able to see each other.”First United Methodist Church and the Islamic Center of San Diego are calling for a day of unity for people of all faiths, for the Bi-National Day of Prayer.
