SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Small businesses are the heart of San Diego's economy, but for those looking to start one, the process can feel overwhelming. It's a gap the nonprofit lender Accion has been working to fill for the last 25 years. "Sometimes thinking about getting a loan can be scary, and I think one of the things we really try to do through our process with our staff is really walk alongside that business owner," said Elizabeth Shott, CEO of Accion. Since they began in 1994, Accion has loaned million to roughly 3,100 small businesses."We're teaching them about their credit, about their finance, and their cash flow. So through the loan process they're getting a lot of one-on-one education from our staff team," said Shott.On Accion's website, you can apply for a loan as well as learn about free resources available in San Diego. After Moreno successfully launched his food truck he was able to open a restaurant with help from Accion. Shott cautions businesses to be careful when getting any loan, being sure to ask questions and understand the terms and fees. Her staff often hears about predatory lenders online which can ultimately cost a business far more than they're able to afford. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Southwest announced Tuesday that the company is offering Californians a special deal on travel throughout the state. Southwest says travelers can buy one-way tickets as low as , but you better be on your toes. The sale only lasts until August 22. According to Southwest: "Purchase from August 21 through August 22, 2018, 11:59 p.m. in the respective time zone of the originating city."The tickets are for travel from September 11, 2018 through February 13, 2019. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — San Diego Police say the man found shot behind a Midway District strip mall was the victim of an armed robbery.Police received a call on Wednesday just after 6 p.m. over shots fired and a vehicle collision in the 3600 block of Midway Dr. Officers arrived to find a grey Acura had crashed into a retaining wall behind several businesses. Inside, the driver had been shot at least once.The man, identified as 18-year-old Eduardo Salguero of San Diego, was taken to a nearby hospital but died of his injuries.Investigators say they've learned that Salguero had arranged to purchase an item through Snapchat. When he arrived to meet the sellers, two Hispanic males entered his vehicle. During the meeting, one of the suspects pulled out a handgun and the transaction turned into an armed robbery.Multiple gunshots were fired inside the vehicle, police said. The two suspects then fled on foot. Police only described the suspects as Hispanic males, between 20-30 years old, who were wearing dark clothing at the time. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Seaport Village is seeing a bounce back in foot traffic now that the most stringent of coronavirus-related restrictions have eased.Port of San Diego officials say in the last month, 39,661 people came to the coastal shopping mall. That's more than double the 16,606 people that came through the center in the month after the shutdown order took effect March 13. The port took over management of Seaport Village about two years ago and invested more than million to spruce it up, create more in-person events, and add new tenants. The idea was to reverse the decline in the village, which had seen numerous closures. Ultimately, the port plans to redevelop the property with a hotel, office space, an aquarium, and a spire. "We're really just doing our best to set it up for the future, for us this is the perfect opportunity with all of the interest that we've gotten," said Lucy Contreras, a program manager in the Port's real estate division.In the last year, the Port has signed leases with Geppetto's, Spill the Beans Coffee, Mr. Moto Pizza House, Sam the Cooking Guy for a restaurant, and a Mike Hess Brewing tasting room combined with City Tacos. The duo already has a location in Imperial Beach and will take over a former restaurant spot on the center's western edge overlooking the bay. "Ever since then, and that's been like three and a half years, you tell people we're doing beer and tacos on the beach, beer and tacos on the water, nobody thinks that's a bad idea," Hess said. On Friday, the port signed a lease with the Malibu Farm restaurant for a Seaport Village location.The mall, which canceled many in-person events during the shutdown, started once again offering live music two weeks ago. It also has balcony concerts every Thursday and Saturday. While the foot traffic has increased, it is still down from pre-COVID-19 levels. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — San Diego's first nonstop flights to Montreal will begin in summer of 2020, according to Canadian airline Air Transat.The airline announced Tuesday it will launch direct flights between Montreal, Quebec, and San Diego next summer.
