NANCHANG, Sept. 26 (Xinhua) -- A Chinese commerce official on Sunday called on foreign investors to maintain their confidence in the country, promising China would make continuous efforts to improve its investment environment.Qian Fangli, deputy director of the Department of Foreign Investment Administration under the Ministry of Commerce (MOC), made the statement at a forum during the Expo Central China 2010 that opened Sunday.Although operation costs in China were rising because of higher labor and raw materials costs, foreign investment continued growing rapidly " because improvements in China's investment environment helped lower their investment costs and boost confidence," Qian said.Further, she noted that the Chinese government would continue to improve policies to encourage foreign investors. But she did not provide further details. In the first eight months of this year, foreign direct investment in China totaled 65.96 billion U.S. dollars, up 18.06 percent from one year earlier, according to MOC statistics. The Expo Central China, scheduled to run from Sept. 26 to Sept. 28, invited economists, entrepreneurs and officials to attend. The expo seeks to promote development in central China, which spans six provinces -- Shanxi, Anhui, Jiangxi, Henan, Hubei and Hunan.

BEIJING, Oct. 10 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao's just concluded Eurasian visit has promoted ties and traditional friendship between China and five European and Asian countries.Wen paid official visits to Greece, Belgium, Italy and Turkey and an unscheduled visit to Germany, and attended the 8th Asia-Europe Meeting (ASEM) and the 13th China-European Union (EU) summit on Oct. 2-9.During the eight-day tour, Wen attended over 70 events, which covered global challenges, bilateral ties, hot topics and cooperative programs in the forms of lectures, talks, meetings, symposiums and tours. The visit, despite its tight schedule, had rich contents, and was another presentation of China's spectacular diplomatic moves.

HANGZHOU, Sept. 24 (Xinhua) -- He Hongwei, a college graduate living in central eastern China's Zhejiang Province, five years ago fussed over landing a decent job amid red-hot competition in the world' s most crowded job market. He then began selling novelty toys on the Internet. Five years on, he has grown into a billionaire and today is busy seeking employees to work in his own factory."I never thought I would make my fortune on the Internet, starting from scratch," the 35-year-old He said.Several years ago, e-shopping was only a "shelter" for many young Chinese who turned to the Internet marketplace to make their living after failing to find decent jobs offline. Most of them earned only paper-thin profits, as e-commerce in China then was still in its infancy. He's story, however, reflected a trend that e-business in China was no longer merely a way of survival, but has become an incubator for the newly-rich who had not expected they could make their fortunes online.According to a report released by Alibaba.com earlier this month, China's largest Nasdaq-listed e-commerce company, some 77 million Chinese individuals and businesses have opened E-shops as of the end of this June.Further, the number of e-shoppers has reached 142 million, or one-third of the nation's total online population.Retail sales at e-shops more than tripled between 2007 and 2009, much faster than the 18 percent growth of retail sales in general during the same period. In the first half of this year, retail sales of e-businesses more than doubled to 211.8 billion yuan (31.6 billion U.S. dollars).Booming sales helped entrepreneurs with e-business start-ups live decent lives, as more than 1 million e-shops at Taobao.com, China's largest online marketplace, earn profits of at least 2,000 yuan a month. As their businesses grow larger, more shops reported profits of over 10 million yuan a year. Sheng Zhenzhong, senior analyst with the research center of Taobao.com, declined to disclose how many such shops were listed on Taobao, but said the number is steadily rising.INTEGRITYAs an old Chinese saying goes, free traders are not bad, which means businessmen should cheat to stay competitive. The old tenet used to work in the early 1980s' when the market economy was initially practiced in China and many businessmen profited from selling shoddy goods. But that could hardly be the case in today's online market, as integrity has become the most important traits for the Internet's commercial success in China.Shi Hongwei is a wholesaler of stockings at Taobao.com. He sells more than 2,000 pairs of socks everyday. For Shi, a young e-shop owner, this is quite a big deal. But, what he cares about most is the rating feedback from his customers.

DAMASCUS, Oct. 29 (Xinhua) -- China's top political adviser Jia Qinglin arrived here Friday for an official friendly visit to Syria. In a written speech released at the airport, Jia, chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), hailed the development of bilateral ties between China and Syria since they established diplomatic relations in 1956."China attaches great importance to the friendly ties with Syria," he said, pledging joint efforts with Syria to enhance political mutual trust, boost traditional friendship, bolster substantial cooperation and promote common development.Jia said he was looking forward to exchanging views with Syrian leaders on the further development of bilateral relations and on major international and regional issues of common concern."I believe my visit will help the people of China and Syria better know each other and boost their friendship," he said.Syria is the first leg of Jia's four-nation tour from Oct. 29 to Nov. 11. He will also visit Poland, Oman and Kazakhstan.

BEIJING, Oct. 4 (Xinhua) -- A 66-member Chinese rescue and relief team sent to provide immediate assistance to flood ravaged Pakistan returned from the Pakistani port city Karachi to Beijing by charter flight Monday, officials said.China sent two rescue and relief missions to flood-afflicted Pakistan since the end of July when floods began taking their toll, said officials from China Southern Airlines Company Limited, which transported the team. The return of these 66 members, including medical workers, experts from the China Earthquake Administration, rescue soldiers as well as journalists, marked the end of the two rescue missions, noted officials. In response to the worst flooding in Pakistan's recent history, China's help included monetary assistance, urgently needed relief goods delivered directly to affected areas, a convoy of 101 trucks to the northern parts of Pakistan, two rescue and relief missions for providing medical relief to the victims, four military helicopters for carrying out rescue missions and an additional 200 million U.S. dollars for post-disaster reconstruction besides the previous 320 million yuan (47 million U.S. dollars) worth of humanitarian supplies.
