SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - California’s Republicans are hoping to grow the party’s numbers in the state despite current odds.Roughly a quarter of California’s voters are registered Republican and in San Diego the GOP is seeing people jump ship.The San Diego GOP has lost thousands of voters in the last year with San Diego County Voter Registrar reporting 491,783 Republicans in May of 2018— compared to a little more 500,000 in May 2017.“A lot of that is the bullying or the stereotyping that goes on with being a conservative,” said Justin Clark, a 19-year-old conservative running for state assembly in Los Angeles, “you have a lot of people not wanting to identify as conservative, but a large portion of those 'undeclared to say' voters are.”The number of undeclared voters in San Diego is 476,186 in 2018 compared to approximately 461,000 just a year ago.“Whether your for or against the two-party system is irrelevant,” said Clark, “but its how those people feel. It’s why those decline to state numbers keep going up because they want to stay with them, they want to identify as them.”Among the California GOP’ers convening in San Diego the first weekend in May are other young faces.Morgan Murtaugh is a 25-year-old former news anchor running for Congress in California’s 53rd District, which is currently held by incumbent Democrat Susan Davis.Murtaugh says she’s gotten death threats over her conservative political leanings.“I mean my grandparents immigrated here from Mexico,” said Murtaugh, “I’m Mexican and I’m a woman. People look at me and they’re like ‘how are you identifying as a Republican they hate you?’ They don’t.”Murtaugh says she and other young Republicans are trying to break the stigma they say is a fabrication of the other side.“I want to change that assumption, said Murtaugh, “I want people to see that we can be for equal love, and we can be pro-environment. I really just hope we can get past these labels at some point.”There are 1.6 million registered voters in San Diego with more than 611,000 Democrats. 2043

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Authorities responded Wednesday after a car slammed into the side of a motel in Point Loma.According to firefighters, the crash happened on the 1300 block of Scott Street at the Vagabond Inn San Diego Airport Marina.The driver was parked in the Point Loma Seafood parking lot when she reportedly hit the gas, driving through a fence and smashing into the side of the motel.The crash created a hole in a bathroom of one of the motel rooms. No one was injured in the crash. 499

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – Close to 100 people packed the Sherman Heights community center Friday night.Just about all of them were there to tell city officials to back off their plan to set up a homeless storage facility at Commercial and 20th Streets.The city says the plan is not finalized, but they are in negotiations with leasing the building. “We have a playground is about 15 feet from this building,” said Noel Bishop, the principal at Our Lady’s School. “The reality is it’s just an open invitation for people to come back to this community and start living on the streets again… having people in our neighborhood that might be drug users, not mentally stable.”Jonathan Herrera, senior advisor for homelessness for the city of San Diego, says the site is expected to similar to the one on 16th street. It will be a place for the homeless to store their belongings while they visit clinics, classes or go to job interviews.The city is promising to be a good neighbor, stressing the site will have security 24/7.  There will be loitering, drugs or alcohol allowed, and they will have regular waste pick-ups within a block radius.“We are currently looking at other facilities in beach communities, uptown, mid-city and southeastern San Diego to see if we can provide additional services in those areas as well,” Herrera said. He said there were a lot of concerns raised that they are taking into consideration, but the city plans to move forward in the process and bring the plan to the San Diego Housing Commission on March 9th.“The mayor highlighted that the time to develop universal consensus is over and that effort to develop consensus has caused us action, and that’s no longer tolerable,” Herrera added. 1733

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Concerns continue to grow amid reports that President Trump may allow border officials to ban US citizens suspected of having coronavirus from re-entering the country.Five years ago, Les and Marilyn Widd retired and made a big move, buying an oceanfront home in Rosarito, Mexico. That dream retirement has suddenly been marred by worries about COVID-19 and a possible presidential action. According to published reports, President Trump is weighing rules to allow border officials to temporarily block an American citizen or legal permanent resident from entering, if there is reason to believe the person has coronavirus."Absolutely upsetting, absolutely upsetting," said Les Widd, 70.Details about the possible plan are unknown, but Widd has heard enough."It's violating your constitutional rights to receive treatment in your own country," said Widd.Widd says if either of them were to develop symptoms, they would have few options. Their hospital in Rosarito isn't accepting COVID-19 patients."In Tijuana hospitals, they are absorbing everything from surrounding towns. They're at the limit. Difficult to get a bed there," said Widd.Both the Widds have go-to hospitals in San Diego where they've received past treatments. Both are covered under Medicare, and they say they have a right to use it, especially during a pandemic."We worked all of our lives and paid into it. We should be able to use our Medicare," said Widd.He also questions how effective a border ban would be."If push comes to shove, I will try any way possible to get over the border ...
