TAMPA, Fla. -- A commercial about child hunger inspired Kennedy McCormick to take action when she just 7 years old.“I felt really bad for the children, so I wanted to do something to help,” said McCormick, now 14.For her birthday that year, she wanted to collect food instead of getting presents.“So we had a party and that’s exactly what happened. Everybody brought food,” said her father, Kelvin.Kennedy has carried on that tradition every year, teaming up with Feeding Tampa Bay to make sure the donations get to those in need.“The more I’ve done it. The more donations I’ve gotten over the years,” said Kennedy. This year with the pandemic, she held a virtual fundraiser, raising about ,000.All her hard work got noticed by General Mills and they surprised her with a donation like she’s never seen before: two truckloads of Cheerios. That’s 48,000 boxes.“I was extra surprised when I saw the truck drive by because I thought it was only going to be the cereal over there and then there was a truck. And I was like oh my gosh there’s so much cereal,” said Kennedy.“She’s a wonderful young lady all around and so this just adds to our ability to participate in something that she enjoys,” said her mother, Joy.Feeding Tampa Bay says they’ll be sending out all these boxes of cereal throughout the community has part of the two million meals they deliver each week. For more information on Feeding Tampa Bay’s Cereal for Summer program, you can click here for more information.Kennedy is still collecting donations on her Facebook recital page at Facebook.com/kjmacgirls.She is also already planning for her party next year with one change, guests will be able to bring cereal and cash. This story was originally published by Erik Waxler at WFTS. 1755

Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg is back in the hospital on Wednesday, according to a court statement. The statement said that Ginsburg is resting comfortably and is expected to be released from the hospital later this week. The statement said that Ginsburg underwent a minimally invasive non-surgical procedure today at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York City to revise a bile duct stent that was originally placed at Sloan Kettering in August 2019.Stent revisions are common occurrences and the procedure, performed using endoscopy and medical imaging guidance, was done to minimize the risk of future infection, her doctors said, according to a statement. In May, Ginsburg was hospitalized for treatment for a benign gallbladder condition.Ginsburg has also beaten cancer four times, most recently she declared herself “cancer free” in January following treatment for pancreatic cancer. 918

STOCKHOLM — The 2020 Nobel Prize in Literature has been awarded to the American poet Louise Glück "for her unmistakable poetic voice that with austere beauty makes individual existence universal."Glück was formerly the Poet Laureate of the U.S. from 2003 to 2004. According to The New York Times, Glück is the first woman to win the award since 1996.The prize was awarded Thursday after several years of controversy and scandal for the world's pre-eminent literary accolade. In 2018, the award was postponed after sex abuse allegations rocked the Swedish Academy, the secretive body that chooses the winners. Two laureates were named last year, with the 2018 prize going to Poland's Olga Tokarczuk and the 2019 award to Austria's Peter Handke.Handke's prize caused a storm of protest because he has been called an apologist for Serbian war crimes.Other writers who were favored for the award were Kenya's Ngugi Wa Thiong' o, Canadian poet Anne Carson, Japanese novelist Haruki Murakami, Russian novelist Lyudmila Ulitskaya and Guadeloupe-born writer Maryse Conde.According to NPR, the 2020 Nobel Prize has a cash prize of about .2 million. The awards ceremony this December will be celebrated virtually because of the COVID-19 pandemic. 1244

The Big Ten and Pac-12 Conferences officially announced on Tuesday that they've postponed their upcoming 2020-21 college football season, which also includes all fall sports, due to the coronavirus pandemic. Both conferences are keeping the option of playing in the spring a possibility.Pac-12 said in a press release that when conditions improve, they'll consider a return to competition for impacted sports after January 1, 2021.“All of the Pac-12 presidents and chancellors understand the importance of this decision, and the disappointment it will create for our student-athletes, the coaches, support staff, and all of our fans,” said Michael H. Schill, president of the University of Oregon. “Ultimately, our decision was guided by science and a deep commitment to the health and welfare of student-athletes. We certainly hope that the Pac-12 will be able to return to competition in the New Year.”Pac-12 Commissioner Larry Scott said that playing in a bubble wouldn't work.“Unlike professional sports, college sports cannot operate in a bubble,” he said in the news release. “Our athletic programs are a part of broader campuses in communities where in many cases the prevalence of COVID-19 is significant. We will continue to monitor the situation and when conditions change we will be ready to explore all options to play the impacted sports in the new calendar year.”In a press release, the Big Ten conference said that multiple factors, which included advice and counsel of the Big Ten Task Force, contributed to them postponing fall sports.“The mental and physical health and welfare of our student-athletes have been at the center of every decision we have made regarding the ability to proceed forward,” said Big Ten Commissioner Kevin Warren in the statement. “As time progressed and after hours of discussion with our Big Ten Task Force for Emerging Infectious Diseases and the Big Ten Sports Medicine Committee, it became abundantly clear that there was too much uncertainty regarding potential medical risks to allow our student-athletes to compete this fall."The Big Ten Conference was the first major conference to cancel fall athletics.“We know how significant the student-athlete experience can be in shaping the future of talented young women and men who compete in the Big Ten Conference," said Warren in the statement. "Although that knowledge made this a painstaking decision, it did not make it difficult. While I know our decision today will be disappointing in many ways for our thousands of student-athletes and their families, I am heartened and inspired by their resilience, their insightful and discerning thoughts, and their participation through our conversations to this point. Everyone associated with the Big Ten Conference and its member institutions is committed to getting everyone back to competition as soon as it is safe to do so.”Along with football, the Big Ten said that men’s and women’s cross country, field hockey, men’s and women’s soccer, and women’s volleyball were also canceled.“Our primary responsibility is to make the best possible decisions in the interest of our students, faculty, and staff,” said Morton Schapiro, Chair of the Big Ten Council of Presidents/Chancellors and Northwestern University President. The Big Ten hopes to play football in the spring. 3325
