It's been a brutal week for many big American retailers.JCPenney announced Friday that it will cut 360 jobs at its stores and corporate headquarters. That's on top of the more than 5,000 layoffs in 2017 after JCPenney decided to close nearly 140 stores.The struggling retailer also said that its earnings and sales for this year will be worse than what Wall Street analysts were expecting. Shares of JCPenney plunged nearly 10% in early trading.JCPenney wasn't the only prominent bricks and mortar chain to report poor results this week.Barnes & Noble posted a quarterly loss and a drop in sales Thursday morning, sending the bookstore's shares to an all-time low.Victoria apparently needs a new Secret too. It's no secret that smoking and secondhand smoke are not good for your health. But a new study shows just how detrimental secondhand smoke is for children. "In past studies, we found up to nearly one-in-two children who come to the pediatric emergency department are exposed to tobacco smoke," said Dr. Ashley Merianos, an associate professor in the School of Human Services at the University of Cincinnati. Dr. Merianos led the study, comparing 380 children living with a tobacco smoker with 1,140 children who are not. The ethnically diverse study found that the children exposed to secondhand smoke at home were more likely to be hospitalized."We also found that the children who had been exposed had increased respiratory-related procedures, increased diagnostic testing. So, for example, being tested for the flu and laboratory testing, as well as radiologic testing, including x-rays of the chest and lateral airways," said Dr. Merianos.The children who were exposed to secondhand smoke were also more likely to be prescribed medications like steroids or inhalers. "Our findings highlight the need to universally screen for tobacco smoke exposure during every pediatric healthcare visit and provide interventions to reduce and prevent exposure among patients and their families," said Dr. Merianos.Dr. Merianos says intervention is key since hospital emergency departments mostly treat underserved patients with high tobacco use and limited access to information about quitting."I think right now, with the COVID-19 pandemic, there has never been a better time to quit. And the reason I say that is we know that there is emerging evidence that both smoking and vaping make it more likely that you have COVID and more severe COVID symptoms," said Dr. Susan Walley, the Chair of American Academy of Pediatric's section on Nicotine and Tobacco Prevention and Treatment. Dr. Walley says she's not surprised by the results of the University of Cincinnati's study, adding that secondhand smoke exposure has short-and-long-term health effects on children."Children who have secondhand smoke exposure are more likely to have ear infections, pneumonia, asthma and if they have asthma, more likely to have more severe asthma attacks like we see in this study," said Dr. Walley.Dr. Walley says children exposed to tobacco smoking parents or older siblings are also more likely to smoke themselves as they get older. Doctors hope the study highlights the importance of encouraging parents to quit tobacco use for good, for the sake of their own health and the children they love. 2581

Investigators believe some of the suspicious, potentially explosive packages sent to 8 prominent politicians and a large media organization may have originated in Florida, according to one law enforcement official.A second law enforcement official said federal investigators are in Florida investigating leads.The latest packages, addressed to former Vice President Joe Biden, are similar to eight others found earlier this week.Those packages were addressed to former President Barack Obama, Hillary Clinton, and others, as well as actor Robert DeNiro, a vocal critic of President Trump.The President has denounced the apparent bombing attempts, saying "Such conduct must be fiercely opposed and thoroughly prosecuted," but at a rally Thursday night and again Friday morning he blamed the media, tweeting that "fake news is fueling anger around the country."Most of the packages were intercepted at mail facilities and got nowhere near their intended targets. 968

In late September, after racist slurs were found on the message boards of five black cadet candidates at the Air Force Academy Preparatory School, the school's superintendent was angry.Lt. Gen. Jay Silveria told cadets to line up and pull out their phones to remember his message, and he forcefully denounced racism and intolerance."If you're outraged by those words, then you're in the right place. That kind of behavior has no place at the Prep School," Silveria said.The speech was posted on Air Force Academy's Facebook page and quickly went viral. The Air Force launched an internal investigation to find the culprit.But on Tuesday, Air Force Academy officials said that one of the black cadet candidates actually wrote the racist messages."We can confirm that one of the cadet candidates who was allegedly targeted by racist remarks written outside their dorm room was actually responsible for the act," the Academy said in a written statement. "The individual admitted responsibility and this was validated by the investigation."The vandalism was written in black marker on a dorm whiteboard with the phrase "go home (expletive)."Lt. Col. Allen Herritage, director of public affairs with the Academy, said that the cadet responsible admitted his guilt when confronted. The individual has "received administrative punishment" and is no longer at the preparatory school, Herritage said.The four other students that were the target of the vandalism are still at the Prep School, which is on the same campus in Colorado Springs, Colorado, as the Air Force Academy.
