SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — President Donald Trump told reporters Saturday the United States may close its border crossings to contain the spread of the novel coronavirus.Speaking from the White House, the President said his administration was "thinking about" possibly closing the country's borders to guard against the spread of COVID-19."We have ports of entry that we are keeping open. And we're not talking about it, we're thinking about all borders," President Trump said Saturday, when asked of the country's border with Mexico. "But right now that's not a border as it pertains to what we're talking about here. This is not a border that seems to be much of a problem right now. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Police are investigating after a body was found in Balboa Park Wednesday afternoon. According to officers, the body was found on the 2100 block of Balboa Drive near Juniper Road and the San Diego Chess Club. The cause of death is unclear at this time. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - More than 140 women, children and their family members will live inside Golden Hall for at least the next three months.The theater's second floor concourse will serve as a temporary bridge shelter while the city installs a new shelter tent at the corner of 17th and Imperial. Father Joe's Villages will manage the shelter, which is to serve as a transition for homeless families to find permanent housing and get on their feet. A recent city report found about 1,500 people were sleeping on San Diego's streets. The families moving into Golden Hall had been living in a bridge tent shelter at 14th and Commercial. That shelter is being removed to make way for a Father Joe's 14-story affordable housing tower. Golden Hall will have on-site residential staff and security 24 hours a day. Deacon Jim Vargas, president of Father Joe's Villages, said Golden Hall's location will present challenges when it comes to delivering key services out of Father Joe's main campus across downtown. He said these next few months will be a good test to see if something longer term could work. "I personally would love, in addition to the tent, to have some brick and mortar," said Vargas. "And if this facility works out well we'd be happy to continue as a service provider."The city is installing the new tent at 17th and Commercial over the next few months. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Police are searching for a suspect they say choked a clerk before robbing a Mira Mesa 7-Eleven.The robbery happened around 2:10 a.m. Tuesday on the 11000 block of Camino Ruiz near Sandburg Elementary School.Police say the suspect walked into the store and asked the clerk for cigarettes. When the clerk went to get the cigarettes, the suspect choked the clerk unconscious from behind.When the man regained consciousness, he discovered that the suspect stole money and cigarettes from the convenience store.The clerk was uninjured during the robbery.  588

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — More than .5 million in fentanyl was seized during a traffic stop in the South Bay this week.A 2004 Mitsubishi Endeavor was stopped for a speeding violation on Wednesday at about 2:30 p.m. heading westbound on State route 905, according to San Diego County Sheriff's Department (SDSO). Border Patrol agents and SDSO Border Crime Suppression detectives searched the vehicle with a K-9 officer and discovered 20 kilograms of powdered fentanyl concealed in the vehicle. Powdered fentanyl is commonly used to produce fake pharmaceutical drugs, SDSO said.RELATED: Drug experts warn of Carfentanil in San DiegoThe seized narcotics have a street value of more than .5 million, according to SDSO.SDSO said the driver of the car, identified as 24-year-old Marilu Escamilla, and her boyfriend, 36-year-old Fernando Camargo, were arrested and booked into San Diego County Jail for felony transportation of controlled substances and other related charges.SDSO said seizures of fentanyl have become increasingly common in San Diego County. Authorities added they regularly seize counterfeit Oxycodone and Xanax pills, which contain fentanyl. According to the county, fentanyl deaths spiked 155 percent from 33 in 2016 to 84 in 2017. Fentanyl is roughly 50 to 100 times more potent than morphine and 50 times more potent than heroin, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says. 1403
