Wearing a face covering in public is recommended by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to help prevent the spread of COVID-19. Still, not everyone is wearing one. A new study offers some insight into why."In particular, just by looking around, it was quite obvious that maybe there were some gender differences," said Valerio Cabraro, a researcher with Middlesex University in London. Cabraro teamed up with the Mathematical Science Research Institute in Berkeley, California to survey roughly 2,500 people, half men and half women, about wearing a face covering out in public."We did find men are less likely than women to state that they wear a face covering anytime they leave the home, when engaged in essential activities and when around people outside the house," said Cabraro.When asked their reasons for not wearing a mask, a few answers stood out.The survey showed clear gender differences in the answers, with more men stating that wearing a face covering was shameful or a sign of weakness. "Wearing a face covering is a sign of weakness, wearing a face covering is shameful and the stigma associated with wearing a face covering is preventing me from wearing one," said Cabraro.The survey also found men are more likely than women to think they will not be affected by the coronavirus. Whether wearing a mask or not, psychologists say seeing other people out in public who are not wearing a mask can affect how safe you feel."I think there’s kind of a fear of individuals feeling vulnerable having a perception of being in fear by wearing a mask, that wearing a mask does for some people resemble I’m afraid, I’m vulnerable," said Dr. Apryl Alexander, a psychologist and associate professor at the University of Denver. Alexander says most people have spent the last 60 days at home, missing important events or milestones in their lives, and are eager to get back to normal. This desire to move on from this sense of loss can affect whether people feel inclined to wear a face covering while out in public. "If I see people not wearing masks, for me that communicates, ‘Do you care about my safety and my wellbeing and the safety of people here?’” said Alexander. “And then I think for some people they might think, ‘Well is it safe? Is this all blown out of proportion? Is the danger not really there, that this person feels comfortable not wearing a mask?’"Alexander says she hopes both men and women adhere to the CDC guidelines about wearing masks out in public and that the exhaustion they feel from having to quarantine doesn't give them a false sense of safety during this time. 2628

United Methodist churches and clergy could face removal from the denomination if they do not affirm its stance against gay marriage and noncelibate LGBT clergy by 2021. The church reached the decision in a vote at a General Conference in St. Louis on Tuesday.Church leaders say the move will almost surely lead more liberal members to leave the mainline denomination.The vote for the "Traditional" plan came after the church voted to reject an earlier proposal, known as the "One Church" plan, which would have allowed local churches to perform same-sex weddings and hire openly LGBT clergy. That move was pitched by proponents as a way to keep the increasingly fractious denomination together amid widespread disagreements about scripture and the morality of same-sex relationships."Many of us have members who are saying they will leave," said the Rev. Tom Berlin of Virginia, a member of the church's legislative committee. "A virus of conflict will spread."Instead, United Methodists voted to push forward the "Traditional" plan, which passed with a vote of 438 to 384."Today, more than 800 worldwide General Conference delegates affirmed the Traditional Plan as The Way Forward for The United Methodist Church," Bishop Scott Jones said in a statement. "This decision resolves a long-standing debate about how we can best accomplish our mission of making disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world.""Our views on same-sex marriage have not changed. We will continue to welcome lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgendered and queer persons to our churches and affirm their sacred worth," the statement said.Rejection of the "One Church" plan, which had support among United Methodist bishops in the United States, drew criticism."The United Methodist Church's special General Conference failed Tuesday to love LGBTQIA people, recognize their gifts in the church, maintain our unity in the midst of diversity, and to live out our Gospel mandate to seek justice and pursue peace," General Secretary Susan Henry-Crowe of the General Board of Church and Society of The United Methodist Church said in a statement."We worship a fully-inclusive, justice-seeking God," the statement said.Several members from African nations had stood on Tuesday to support the "Traditional" plan, saying it accords with scripture's teachings on sexuality."Today the church in Africa is growing in leaps and bounds because we are committed to biblical Christianity," said the Rev. Jerry Kulah, who is from Liberia. "You cannot be performing Christianity differently in America and Africa and suggest that we are one church."Several young Americans, on the other plan, pleaded to have their voices heard.Shayla Jordan, a 21-year-old delegate from the church's Kansas-based Great Plains Conference, said 15,000 young United Methodists had signed a petition opposing the "Traditional" plan."We need a church that is still alive. "You will not stop trying to make me fit your idea of a loving person."The General Conference took an unusual turn later Tuesday afternoon when Carlene Fogle-Miller, a young delegate from Florida, proposed an investigation into "vote buying" at the conference. The proposal to send the matter to the church's ethics committee passed 417-388."If there is nothing to hide, there is no need to fear an ethics investigation," Fogle-Miller said on Twitter. "Period."The United Methodists' Book of Discipline states that all people are of "sacred worth" but denounces the "practice of homosexuality" as "incompatible with Christian teaching."Openly gay and lesbian clergy members can be removed from ministry, but church trials on the matter are rare.In 2016, dozens of United Methodist clergy members came out as lesbian, gay or bisexual defying their church's ban on "self-avowed practicing homosexuals" serving in ministry and essentially daring their supervisors to discipline them.In a public letter posted online, 111 pastors, deacons, elders and candidates for ministry said church rules require "that we not bring our full selves to ministry, that we hide from view our sexual orientations and gender identities."That campaign came after a similar letter issued by 15 Methodist ministers in New York, who also openly acknowledged that they are gay or lesbian.In some parts of the United States, openly gay clergy serve with few if any restrictions. Conservatives argue that such policies threaten to break up the church into small, self-governing branches.For more than a decade, liberal United Methodists have sought to push the church to adopt more lenient provisions, without success.After the earlier vote to reject the more liberal proposal, Reconciling Ministries, a pro-LGBT church group, tweeted, "God weeps. With a lot of states forcing businesses to close their doors over the past couple months, small businesses felt the pain of little to no foot traffic.Now, building customer relationships is more important than ever, and many businesses turned to the internet to help fill the gap in sales.“Everything happened, as we all know, in a matter of three days the world changed dramatically,” said Dawn Johnson, owner of Mainstream Boutique Aurora and Mainstream Boutique Castle Pines in Colorado. She’s been in business for seven years.“The passion of a small business owner goes so much deeper than people know. It’s like a child,” she said.Back in March, she was forced to close her doors. Her only solution was to move online.“I would come in on the weekend. My husband would hold the camera, my daughter who is 16 she would model the clothes,” Johnson explained. “We tried things we never tried before.” This included a virtual fashion show and a virtual selling event with one of their vendors.With limited resources, Jonson and her staff managed to post their items for sale on platforms like Instagram and Facebook in a matter of days.“Anything helps. Every time we get one sale on that I do a happy dance,” she said. And the reach of the internet brought in a following from all over.“One of the things we noticed is we had a captive audience for the first time ever,” she said.“We are social beings and I think our limitations on our social interactions have 100 percent changed the way we do so many things,” said Melissa Akaka, an Associate Professor of Marketing at the University of Denver. She does consumer insight research.“Small businesses have especially had to become innovative about how they can maintain a relationship with their customers when they need to follow all of the social distancing protocols that are in place,” she explained.Akaka said the pandemic has changed the way we buy things – and customer relationships, especially through social media, are more important than ever.“Those who have really strong brands and really strong community ties with their customers or their followers, I think have a better chance of being able to succeed on this type of platform because they already have their customers built in,” she explained.However, even companies with those strong ties are having a hard time.“We have a following, but we’re still a small family business,” said Steve Weil, President of Rockmount Ranch Wear. The company has been around 75 years, serving customers and other businesses with their clothing and other apparel. Rockmount went online back in 2001.“That has been our lifeblood quite frankly, because it enabled us to reach the world in a…disrupted retail landscape,” Weil explained. “Since COVID, it was part of our business that continued to operate whereas retail did not.”Long standing businesses like this, have seen hard times before.“Everything from tornadoes wiping our factories, to the Great Recession, and now this,” he said. “The secret of survival is never forgetting that disasters happen, and we’ve been through them every 10 years for 75 years.”Even with the help of the internet and social media, both Johnson and Weil saw a drop in sales in recent months.“It was less, it wasn't the same. But what it was able to do is keep us going because we literally would have had no income at all,” Johnson said.“Our sales plummeted to less than half of normal,” Weil said.Big social media sites like Facebook and Instagram are trying to make a difference by offering a platform for small businesses to market and sell. Facebook recently announced Facebook Shops, which will allow businesses to sell their items directly on their platform, without taking them to another site. Johnson said she plans on taking advantage of that as well.“The Facebook and the Instagrams of the world, it means a lot for companies to recognize how hard it is for small businesses. We’ll try anything to see if it works,” Johnson said.Akaka said when it comes to small businesses, there’s a lot of room for innovation, as customer relationships and online presence becomes more important.“Those who can figure out how to adapt and really think through solutions to not just their business problems but to their customers' problems,” she explained. “Those who can step up and be solutions for that are going to weather the storm much better.” 4395
