The 20-degree wind chill isn’t stopping Herb Bardavid from walking the streets. He's hoping for his next meaningful interaction. With a camera in his hand, Bardavid is hoping to meet a stranger and tell their stories. But it’s not just any stranger. Bardavid interviews New York’s seniors, people over the age of 70, because he believes they all have something to say and a story to tell. “I look at people walking in the street and I want to photograph them and be able to tell their story,” he says. With their permissions, Bardavid puts their stories, along with the photos he takes, on his blog called "Getting Old and Getting Out in New York City."“The elderly in New York tend to be invisible,” he explains. “People look past them.“And I think it’s important to recognize the elderly and their individuality and their importance and their need to be part of society.” Bardavid himself is 75 years old. Despite the calm voice of the semi-retired therapist, people don't always stop when he approaches. “I would say 60 percent of the people I stop are willing to talk to me,” Bardavid says. Or they'll stop and chat, but they don’t want their photo taken, he says.On this cold day, Bardavid is getting even less interviews. "I think we hit the 40 percent today," he says. The apparent suicide of financier and accused sex trafficker Jeffrey Epstein early Saturday could lead to more accusers and witnesses stepping forward as well as a flurry of civil suits against the multimillionaire's estate, according to legal experts.Authorities believe Epstein, 66, hanged himself at New York's Metropolitan Correctional Center, a law enforcement official told CNN -- less than a day after a court unsealed documents detailing disturbing claims against him and associates. His attorney is calling for an investigation into his death."The federal criminal case will end with his death," CNN legal analyst Paul Callan said. "But on the civil side, those cases will continue. They'll now be converted into an action against the estate of Jeffrey Epstein."One such lawsuit could be filed as soon as Wednesday by a woman who alleges Epstein raped her when she was 15. That's the day that New York's Child Victims Act takes effect, giving adult survivors of child sexual abuse one year to sue an abuser for offenses in New York, no matter how long ago the abuse allegedly occurred.The Southern District of New York's investigation into Epstein's conduct is ongoing, a person familiar with the investigation said. TEXAS CITY, Texas – About 45 minutes southeast of Houston, the Texas City Independent School District (TCISD) takes school security to a different level than most districts across America."We do think we're the school of 2030," said Mike Matranga.Texas City is just 20 minutes from Santa Fe High School where, two years ago, a gunman killed 10 people “You don’t hire a plumber to fix an IT problem," Matranga said. "You don't hire someone who is an educator to fix real world, mass violence problems." Texas City hired Matranga to overhaul school safety and gave him .5 million to do it.Mantranga is a 12-year Secret Service veteran who's been to dozens of countries and war zones."I would say the pressure is equal if not greater," Mantranga said of his role in Texas City. Classroom doors in schools now have reinforced glass and special locks.The district has hundreds of cameras in its 14 schools. At any point in time, around two-dozen can have facial recognition capabilities. Matranga's security team estimates the software is accurate about seven out of 10 times there is an alert.That's not the only software TCISD has invested in.Teachers have an app to alert the security team of a problem. The entire district can be locked down with a press of a button. Students can report tips online. The district has also invested in software that searches social media and the dark web. The district has also created behavioral profiles of each school. The profiles track issues like the amount of in-school and out-of-school suspensions to give the district a better idea of which students might be at risk. Matranga has faced criticism for his methods. There have been concerns the enhanced security could racially profile, violate privacy, or mis-identify students. “People need to stop being so sensitive," Matranga said. "Facts and data are facts and data. I don’t make them up. We take it and build from it and we identify kids at risk.”"I think that our society has gotten to a point where we are too politically correct where people are getting hurt," he said. But in an era that’s seen a number of high profile school shootings, it’s something Matranga says he won't be sorry about."If you don’t like what we’re doing, education is free.
