As protests reached unprecedented levels on Wednesday, bolstered by professional athletes sitting out sporting events, Republicans offered a full-throated backing of police officers during Night 3 of the Republican National Convention.Featured on Wednesday, Michael McHale of the National Association of Police Organizations, went after the Biden campaign, who he claimed is “anti-police.”“I’m proud that the overwhelming majority of American police officers are the best of the best and put their lives on the line without hesitation. And good officers need to know their elected leaders and the department brass have their backs,” said McHale.Meanwhile, unrest unfolded in Kenosha, Wisconsin, following the shooting of Jacob Blake. Blake was shot seven times by Rusten Sheskey, a Kenosha Police officer who has since been placed on administrative leave.Investigators, speaking for the first time since Sunday's incident, declined to press charges on Wednesday against Sheskey despite the massive protests. Joining in the protests were athletes from the NBA, MLB and MLS, who took the unprecedented step to boycott playing as players demanded action against the officer who shot Blake. As the fourth night of demonstrations ensued in Kenosha, amid a summer of protests demanding changes to policing, Sen. Marsha Blackburn, R-Tenn., decried protests.“I'm talking about the heroes of our law enforcement and armed services. Leftists try to turn them into villains. They try to cancel them. But I'm here to tell you that these heroes can’t be canceled.,” Blackburn said.Mike Pence, accepting the GOP nomination for a second term as vice president Wednesday, tried to thread the needle between offering support for law enforcement while understanding the pain many Black Americans are experiencing. "We don’t have to choose between supporting law enforcement and standing with African American neighbors," Pence said. While Republicans multiple times claimed that Biden would defund policing, Biden has said he opposes defunding police departments. 2052

As the pictures come in from along the Florida panhandle, especially from devastated Panama City and Mexico Beach, many of us are feeling a need to help those who lost their homes. Should you give cash, donate cleaning supplies or collect canned goods?Giving is good. But giving to a good charity — one that knows how to get the help to victims quickly — is even better. The Better Business Bureau and Charity Navigator are offering advice on how to donate and sharing which groups are best prepared to distribute your donation.Despite all the new high tech ways to donate, from crowdsourcing to charity apps, an oldie might be your best bet at first. 663

ATLANTA — Georgia's legislature on Tuesday passed hate crimes legislation deemed essential by state leaders, sending the measure to Gov. Brian Kemp's desk.Georgia is currently one of four states in the U.S. without hate crime laws. The price Republicans exacted for moving that legislation forward was the simultaneous passage of a bill that would mandate penalties for crimes targeting police and other first responders. The action comes after Senate Republicans had added police as a protected class to the hate crimes legislation last week, but then moved those protections to a separate bill in a deal between the parties.Kemp's office said in a statement that he'd sign the hate crimes bill, pending a legal review. The bill's passage comes amid weeks-long protests against systemic racism throughout the country. The protests were sparked by the death of George Floyd, who died in police custody in Minneapolis after bystander video showed an officer kneeling on his neck for more than eight minutes. The passage also comes weeks after three arrests were made in connection with the shooting death of Ahmaud Arbery. The 25-year-old Arbery was killed in Burnswick, Georgia in February, and his case changed jurisdictions several times due to one of the suspect's connections with the local District Attorney's office. It wasn't until days after a video of the altercation leaked to the public in May that two of the men, Gregory and Travis McMichael, were arrested and charged with murder. A third man, William "Roddy" Bryan, was also charged with murder a few weeks later. 1582

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) — Authorities say two cranes collided and at least partially collapsed at a construction site in Austin, Texas, injuring at least 22 people. TV footage showed one of the crane operators still inside the crane cabin, although it did not appear to be damaged.Austin-Travis County EMS reports that at least 22 people were hurt, including at least seven who were being treated and prepped for transport to a hospital. At least eight ambulances were headed to the scene. 746
