This is really a law for people who are very sick, who have exhausted all treatment options and who cannot enroll in a clinical trial, said Starlee Coleman, senior policy adviser at the Goldwater Institute, a conservative public policy think tank based in Phoenix that supports right-to-try legislation."For people living in a state where right-to-try is already on the books, they already have the ability today to work with their doctors directly to approach a drug company with a drug in clinical trials and ask for the option to try that drug outside of the clinical trial," she said. "For people living in the 12 states without a right-to-try law, today they don't have this option, but if the federal law passes, they will have the option."Some opponents argue that the bill won't change much but could have a detrimental effect on how the FDA safeguards the health of the public.Dr. Steven Joffe, professor in medical ethics and health policy at the University of Pennsylvania's Perelman School of Medicine, co-authored a perspective paper about such concerns, published in the New England Journal of Medicine last month. The paper notes that the FDA already has expanded-access policies, sometimes called compassionate use, to give terminally ill patients without other options access to investigational medical products outside of clinical trials.About 99% of submitted applications for expanded access to almost 9,000 investigational drugs were allowed to proceed over a 10-year period between January 2005 and December 2014, according to a study by FDA researchers, published in the journal Therapeutic Innovation & Regulatory Science in 2016."Emergency requests for individual patients are usually granted immediately over the phone and non-emergency requests are generally processed within a few days," FDA Commissioner Dr. Scott Gottlieb said in a statement last year. 1885

This effort to distance itself from the Mormon name isn't new. Leaders of the faith -- which has more than 16 million members worldwide -- made similar efforts in 1982, 2001 and 2011, CNN affiliate KSTU reported.Patrick Mason, a religion professor and chair of Mormon studies at Claremont Graduate University, said there are a couple of reasons why the church wants to create a clear separation between itself and the word Mormon."Mormon is a long-standing nickname for the church and for the movement, but the church leadership has always been concerned that the nickname has obscured the fundamentally Christian nature of the church and the religion," Mason told CNN. "Especially since they're so many people who've criticized the church and have done so historically for not being Christian or orthodoxly Christian. The church leadership really wants to emphasize the fact that it is a Christian church."Mason said the word Mormon has been used to describe not just the members of the church, but it's also been used more broadly to include members of other splinter groups that broke away from the mainstream church."That includes what are now known as the fundamentalists, which are the polygamists," Mason said. "For more than 100 years, the mainstream LDS church has gone to great pains to distance itself from those who practice polygamy. It doesn't want to have any confusion there between those two groups."But Mason's not sure if this effort will catch on either. Other than Nelson saying he felt inspired to do this, Mason said there doesn't seem to be an obvious "reason why (Nelson) would feel that they might be more successful this time around than in the past."The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints was founded in upstate New York in 1830, when Joseph Smith published writings he said he found and translated from Egyptian-style hieroglyphics into English. That's the Book of Mormon, which believers say consists of writings produced by ancient American civilizations and complied by a prophet named Mormon. 2049

This is the second time since the naming conventions were started in the 1950s that the Greek alphabet will be needed. In 2005, 27 storms formed and the last six were named after the Greek alphabet. In that year, Tropical Storm Alpha didn’t form until mid-October.Subtropical Storm Alpha is not expected to last very long now that it is over land, bringing winds and rain to Portugal and Spain.Tropical Storm Beta is gaining strength and could become a hurricane early next week before making landfall along the southern Texas coast, according to the National Hurricane Center. 576

Trump tweeted Thursday morning: "To the three UCLA basketball players I say: You're welcome, go out and give a big Thank You to President Xi Jinping of China who made your release possible and, HAVE A GREAT LIFE! Be careful, there are many pitfalls on the long and winding road of life!" 287

This was just the pastor discussing what the thinks (the) best case scenario would be, Roger Oldham, spokesman for the Southern Baptist Convention, told CNN earlier this week. "But the church has to make the decision together to tear down the church." 251
