SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Support for the Black Lives Matter movement is now visible on a downtown San Diego street.Over the weekend, various Black Lives Matter banners were put up on Broadway, between Third Avenue and Kettner Boulevard.The banners showcase the work of San Diego-based artist Anthony Tyson, and they display the message that Black lives of every age, gender, preference, past, and future matter.“You know, not that many people of my color, of my ethnicity is around this area. So, my people can come down and see it, and then also you have people that are used to this area seeing something different. And it gets them to ask the question of ‘what is this?’ and that's all you really need at the end of the day,” Tyson told ABC 10News.Tyson collaborated with the nonprofit Downtown San Diego Partnership for the project.“The Downtown Partnership believes strongly in its duty to ensure organizational efforts are promoting equality and addressing systemic injustice and racial discrimination wherever they exist. In addition to commitments made within the organization, the Downtown Partnership is working to foster a greater sense of cultural vibrancy through placemaking and special projects. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The Food and Drug Administration has recalled several types of tattoo ink after determining they were contaminated with bacteria. One of them is the popular black ink made by Dynamic Color. The FDA found that two of their lots tested positive for microorganisms. The recall includes all bottles of Scalpaink SC, Scalpaink PA, and Scalpaink AL basic black tattoo inks manufactured by Scalp Aesthetics. One lot of Color Art’s red Solid Ink-Diablo was also included. Tattoo shops across the country were contacted through their local health departments about the recall. One of the largest tattoo parlors in San Diego, SD Tattoo, says they got the email Wednesday morning and immediately searched through their inks.They did have the Dynamic black ink, but tattoo artist Nicki Ninteman said, "We checked all the lot numbers and all of ours are clean, so we’re good."She said they didn't have either of the other two brands in the shop.According to the FDA, people who have been tattooed with contaminated ink can experience rashes or lesions of red papules. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – The American Red Cross of San Diego/Imperial Counties opened a shelter Thursday night for residents displaced by flooding from heavy rainstorms.The shelter opened around 9:30 p.m. at the Paradise Valley Seventh-day Adventist Church on East 8th Street in National City.Services include a safe and clean place to stay, food, hydration, comfort kits with personal hygiene items, emotional support and health services, according to the Red Cross. The shelter will stay open as long as there is a need.In response to the flooding caused by today’s rainstorms, #RedCross disaster workers are working to open a shelter this evening at the Paradise Valley Seventh Day Adventist Church (2701 East 8th Street, National City, CA 91950). SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — The discovery of suspicious packages near a downtown San Diego building prompted evacuations, but the boxes were later determined to be harmless.Authorities were called an area near the intersection of 6th Avenue and B Street at around 8:30 a.m. after several white boxes were found and deemed suspicious.The WeWork building through the 13th floor was evacuated and traffic lanes were closed in a nearby area due to the investigation. I’ve been here for 15 years. While this morning’s incident at the San Diego Union-Tribune headquarters turned out to be non-threatening, Patrick said the heavy police presence and bomb squad response were appropriate."We want to make sure that we never let our guard down and we take every report as serious as we can," Patrick said. Unlike political figures, regular citizens do not have the luxury of having the secret service monitoring our mail. So Patrick said it is essential that we be extra vigilant, especially during the season of giving. “Even rudimentary bombs can explode in your face," Patrick said. "Unfamiliar packages should be treated with caution. Is there a return address and is it a name you don’t recognize?
