SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Controversial Heisman Trophy winner Johnny Manziel made an unexpected appearance in San Diego Thursday.Manziel threw passes during the "Pro Day" at the University of San Diego, where NFL scouts gathered to evaluate some Toreros seniors. They also took notes on the former Texas A&M star.Manziel, who currently lives in the L.A. area, has been working with San Diego-based quarterback guru George Whitfield, Jr. on his game.He flamed out after just two seasons with the Cleveland Browns.Manziel’s personal troubles include an arrest for disorderly conduct, an altercation with his girlfriend, and time in rehab for an unspecified issue. He admitted to depression and self-medicating with alcohol during his time in the NFL.Manziel just celebrated his first wedding anniversary and told 10News he’s too busy to get into trouble.He said he’s hoping to sign with a pro team and resume his career. 923

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - As the government shutdown approaches its third week, San Diego’s food stamp recipients are preparing for possible changes to their benefits. The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, or food stamps, helps feed roughly 40 million Americans. According to the USDA, eligible recipients are guaranteed benefits through January. The U.S. Department of Agriculture is expected to make a statement this week on SNAP funding into February, according to San Diego Hunger Coalition spokesman Joseph Shumate, citing the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities (CBPP).Any SNAP adjustments could also increase the burden on San Diego charities. Many Feeding San Diego beneficiaries also rely on SNAP to help their families, the organization said."For every one meal we do, the SNAP program does 12 meals," said Feeding San Diego CEO, Vince Hall. "That is a 12 to 1 ratio, so any cut to SNAP is going to have dramatic effects on charities already struggling to keep up with the demand, the unmet need for food across our communities."Hall says they are preparing for worst-case scenarios, like the shutdown continuing for weeks or months. According to CBPP, the USDA may rule that the only appropriation available for SNAP after January is the program’s billion “contingency reserve,” which was made available through the fiscal year 2018 appropriations act. But SNAP benefits currently amount to about .8 billion a month, so the billion reserve cannot fully fund February benefits.Other feeding programs, including WIC, which provides food aid and nutrition counseling for pregnant women, new mothers and children, and food distribution programs on Indian reservations, will continue on a local level, but additional federal funding won't be provided. School lunch programs will continue through February. The shutdown started Dec. 21. About 420,000 federal employees are working without pay, while 380,000 are being forced to stay home. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Days before the sale of a Del Cerro home was scheduled to close, thieves went on a shopping spree inside the house.In the 5600 block of Genoa Drive, neighbors were jolted by something unexpected."It's shocking because things like that don't happen in our neighborhood," said Diane Cozey.On Wednesday morning, at a three-bedroom, three-bath home that was well into escrow, a disturbing discovery was made by the staging company arriving to collect their inventory. The front door had been left ajar. "Just dismayed that someone could do something like this," said homeowner Randy Arciniega.Arciniega says his home was raided. The furniture, installed lighting, and rugs remained, but just about everything else was gone: towels, pillows, blankets, artwork, lamps, plants and other decor. Also missing was the refrigerator."The only thing that bothered me more is so much destruction happened," said Arciniega.Arcieniega says his beautiful floors were carved up as the burglars dragged the fridge out of the home. The total loss? About ,500.He tells 10News the lockbox was attached to some PVC piping, which was found damaged. The thieves apparently yanked it off the lockbox and somehow got inside it to use the key. Arcieniega says the biggest mistake he made was shutting down the alarm, because so many people were going in and out of the home. He believes the thieves were likely headed back for the rest of the inventory. The washer had been moved from the laundry room to the garage.The break-in happened sometimes between Saturday afternoon and Wednesday morning. Arciniega covered the costs of the refrigerator and floor damage. The sale of the home is expected to close Monday. 1716

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Bike the Bay celebrated its 11th annual ride on Sunday but this year it added some safety changes. Roughly 3,000 people participated in the popular bike ride. The ride is 25 miles and takes cyclists over the Coronado Bridge, through Coronado, Imperial Beach, Chula Vista and National City. It's the only day of the year where bikes are allowed on the iconic bridge. This year, the event made some changes after an accident during the ride last year. Christina Rocheleau who was not participating in the ride collided head-on with a participant who was trying to pass cyclists along the trail. Rocheleau suffered a fractured nose and three fractured vertebrae. She hasn't been on a bike since. At the time of the accident, organizers told us that they take safety very seriously. This year, they added more signs along the route, more volunteers to guide cyclists and made the route all one-way. All of the proceeds for the ride go towards the San Diego County Bike Coalition, an organization that promotes bicycles as a form of transportation and advocates for safer roads for cyclists.   1156
