SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Two years after Lime scooters hit the pavement, the company has reached a milestone - surpassing 100 million rides globally. The company is thanking its riders who span across more than 120 cities, 30 countries, and five continents.A San Diego chef is one of those riders; in fact, he too reached a personal milestone. "My name is Justin Vaiciunas, and I am San Diego's #1 Lime rider!"A Lime representative called Vaiciunas last week to tell him about the accomplishment; Vaiciunas clocked in nearly 600 rides this year."I live right over off of Pacific Highway, and I scooter from there to work every day and back, and then also all around; even to Balboa Park, North Park, everywhere I can," said Vaiciunas. Vaiciunas likes how accessible and easy the scooters make it getting around downtown. He now uses them for 80 percent of his commutes. "I used to spend about in gas a week; now I maybe spend that a month."The company says with the growth they've increased education outreach as well as efforts to be good stewards in the cities they serve. As for Vaiciunes, his next goal is being the country's #1 Lime rider.Last month Lime's future in San Diego was called into question when the City claimed the company violated geo-fencing rules. The city then began the process to revoke Lime's permit.But a Lime spokesperson says the company looks forward to an upcoming hearing to make its case. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- When the March of Dimes was founded in the 1930's, the mission was to fight polio, now the focus is to help all women and babies get the healthcare they need.But there are still plenty of obstacles, especially for women of color.Like Winter, who lost a premature baby, "What can we do to bridge the gap to make sure that African-American women have a great chance to experience birth?"According to March of Dimes black women are three times more likely to die from pregnancy related causes than white women. The organization also reports that black babies are twice as likely to die before their first birthday.In San Diego, the inequities also apply to immigrant communities and those who don't speak English.March of Dimes' job is to reach those under served groups.Marta Bills, with March of Dimes San Diego says there are all sorts of ways the organization is trying to promote equality, including increased funding, providing scientific research and even training healthcare providers to tackle bias."To just ensure that they are providing the most respectful and unbiased care they possibly can," Bills said.March of Dimes is also expanding a program that promotes group prenatal care.It was impacted when Covid hit, but local clinics are figuring out ways to start back up again safely.Bills says the groups give women who participate more time with their doctors but also lead to better outcomes overall because patients tend to show up to their appointments more often. 1506

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - U.S. Customs and Border Protection started Tuesday construction on its second border wall project along the U.S-Mexico border. The 14-mile long project consists of crews replacing existing barriers with new 30-foot tall steel bollards. The contract was awarded to Texas-based construction company SLSCO Ltd. The secondary wall project runs just north of the primary fence replacement project which started last summer. 446

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — With another round of coronavirus closures set to begin Saturday, several San Diego County businesses are fighting back legally.Despite the change to California's most restrictive reopening tier, Pacers and Cheetah's adult entertainment clubs won't be shutting their doors. Last week, the businesses won a suit against the county and a judge granted a temporary restraining order allowing them to stay open.An attorney representing Pacers told ABC 10News their argument centered around first amendment rights, and adult entertainment is a protected form of expression. It's unclear if that argument could apply to other businesses, but he added that there are other legal paths to challenging the closures.Another suit has also been filed by a group of San Diego County gyms, but no decision has been made yet.San Diego County Supervisor Kristin Gaspar says the legal actions are understandable given the tough situation."Now we're threatening the workforce again we're threatening the closure of these businesses again and I think this is entirely unsustainable for our business community," Gaspar said. Gaspar added that the county has appealed to the state to avoid the tier change, asking them to take into account other factors, including where a majority of outbreaks are linked to and the county's hospitalization rate."At this point in time our hospitalizations for COVID-19 are at 6%, there's a lot of capacity left in our hospitals system," Gaspar said.On the heels of the successful adult entertainment lawsuit, Gaspar says it stands to reason other businesses could do the same."You could make the case as a restaurant owner as a gym owner that our data does not support this decision to close down and closing down will create undue financial harm to these businesses it has already I think they have a strong compelling case," she said.Although individual businesses are fighting back legally, Gaspar says at this point, it doesn't appear the county has plans to file suit against the state."So far there hasn't been anything that's come out of those closed sessions to suggest that the County of San Diego will proceed along that route," said Gaspar. 2192

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - UC San Diego Police sent out a warning to Faculty and Staff about a series of burglaries this week.  The email states the thefts occurred at occupied and unlocked apartments.  There were three cases of break-ins and attempted break-ins that took place in campus housing complexes. There was another report of a car break-in. But UC San Diego police say the San Diego Police Department is working on nearly 30 burglary cases in the similar area. According to UCSD Police, on Tuesday, a woman at The La Jolla Del Sol apartments reported getting out of the shower and finding a female intruder. The resident yelled, and the thief took off with a backpack, cell phone, purse, and laptop.   On Sunday, a resident at the Mesa Nueva Apartments reported a male intruder removing the screen from his living room window.   On Monday a similar report out of the Sixth College Apartments for undergraduates.
