SAN DIEGO, CA (KGTV) — It was a struggle that paved the way for American women today, giving those forced to be silent, a voice: the right to vote."It took 72 years from 1848 until 1920 to get the 19th Amendment added to our constitution," said Anne Hoiberg, Board President of the Women's Museum of California. She refuses to forget what it took to get here and the women who fought not only for the right to vote, but for equality."Elizabeth Cady Stanton and Susan B. Anthony they were really the team," she said while pointing to photos that line an exhibit inside of the museum at Liberty Station. "Carrie Chapman Catt started the League of Women Voters.""We have to credit Elizabeth Cady Stanton and Lucretia Mott two Quakers, two abolitionist, who were determined that women needed to have the right to vote, but they also needed other rights," said Hoiberg. "They needed the right to divorce, to go to college, to become professionals like a doctor or a lawyer."Because of those women and many more, the protests, marches, arrests and tireless work, women here in San Diego heading to the polls know their votes count. Their opinions matter. Their voices are heard."That means a lot to me," said voter Linda Garcia. "It's terrible that it took so long to even happen.""We have rights and we should take advantage of those rights," said Diana Romero, another women who always votes. "Hopefully a lot of women do take advantage of those rights and vote."As we celebrate the centennial of suffrage this year, "The Power of the Ballot Box" exhibit will remain on display through the month of march at the museum in Liberty Station.Hoiberg said the goal is to make sure everyone, especially the younger generations, know how far we have come and that so much is possible, even when the fight isn't over."Little girls need to see that women can achieve anything," she said. "It is important for all of us to just remember those courageous women, and many, many men who really fought hard so women can get the right to vote." 2036
SAN DIEGO, Calif. (KGTV) - Street racing could return to SDCCU Stadium, after just a couple month's hiatus.RaceLegal, a non-profit that has run drag races in the stadium parking lot for 21 years, says they have new leadership and new funding. They hope to resume racing soon.But, organizers say they're having trouble getting permission from the City of San Diego to use the venue."This is really important for the community," says Lydia Denecochea, RaceLegal's Executive Director. "It saves lives."RaceLegal started in the late 1990s as a response to a rash of street racing crashes and deaths. Denecochea says giving people a safe, controlled environment to race has made the roads safer across the city."It's a human characteristic that we are competitive, and many of us love speed. It'll never go away," she says.The non-profit group joined forces with city leaders, the San Diego Police Department and the San Diego Sheriff to give drivers an alternative. People could even volunteer at events to satisfy community service requirements from traffic tickets.The number of deaths from street racing fell from 16 in 2000 to just two in 2018. Injuries also saw a drastic drop-off in the same time frame, from 39 to only one."It works," says Denecochea. "In 2000, we had carnage on our roads."But a lack of funding led the non-profit to close in early 2019. A message on their website told supporters that the budget deficit, "renders the program not viable to continue service to our community."RELATED: RaceLegal stops drag races after more than two decades in Mission ValleyThey held what many thought would be their final race on March 1.Since then, interest from a private investor has Denecochea looking into holding more races. She's now asking supporters to send a letter to the Mayor's office and to other city leaders urging them to let RaceLegal use SDCCU Stadium again.A spokesperson from the city told 10News they're looking into the issue. In a statement, they said, "The City is in communication with RaceLegal on the potential resumption of legal racing at the stadium. However, concurrently the City is in discussions with other race producers to ensure that legal racing at the stadium continues to provide a safe option for the San Diego community."Councilmember Scott Sherman's office says they've also been in touch with RaceLegal and with the stadium to resolve the issue.One potential roadblock is the pending sale of SDCCU Stadium and the land around it to San Diego State University. In November, voters passed Measure G, which authorized the deal to create an SDSU West campus and build a new stadium for the Aztec football program.Denecochea says she wants the city to let RaceLegal keep racing until construction starts. She thinks they can use that time to find a new venue."It's worth it to save 16 lives a year," she says. 2862
SAN DIEGO (KGTV) Chicano artists and activists gathered to voice their concerns about two more murals getting torn down during construction on a local school, one week after the first mural was destroyed.The San Diego Unified School District is working on upgrading Memorial Preparatory school in Logan Heights. Part of the upgrade involves tearing down buildings and walls, and on some of those walls are decades-old murals painted by local Chicano artists. The murals all celebrate the history and culture of the local area.Wednesday, Sept. 30, the artists gathered with a group outside the school and asked to save the murals. Moments later, the first mural was destroyed. A spokesperson for the district said that building could not be saved because it had asbestos.The advocates expressed concern over that statement, saying if the asbestos was really that bad, the construction workers should not have let it collapse the way it did, allowing dust to spread into neighboring homes.RELATED: Barrio Logan artists upset about destruction of historic muralOne week later and the artists gathered again in front of the school, this time saying there are two more murals inside the school they want to save. They said to their knowledge, the buildings these murals are painted on are staying up and these areas do not have asbestos, but certain parts are being torn down, including where the murals are. They’re asking the district to save these murals, offering to supply the funding and labor needed to move the artwork.“What we’re saying is we have the resources we have the will and we have the passion to go forward with the removal. So it’s not that it can’t be done, it’s that we’re not being allowed our rights to preserve them for the entire community,” a representative from the group said.KGTV spoke to a representative from the district Sept. 30, who said they did not want to take the murals down but had to for safety reasons due to the asbestos. They also mentioned the construction will benefit the students in the long run. SAN DIEGO (KGTV)— In the wake of two serious e-scooter accidents over the weekend, San Diego city leaders are working to update e-scooter regulations. While the scooters are off-limits on all city sidewalks, they are allowed on beach boardwalks. While some believe they are instrumental in freeing up car traffic and parking, others believe scooters just bring the congestion straight onto the boardwalks.Chase McKenna enjoys riding e-scooters at Pacific Beach. He says it is the best way to enjoy the boardwalk."Cruise around the strip right here and that's fun,” McKenna said. “They're convenient because down here, they're everywhere."But what is fun and convenient for McKenna, is a total nightmare for Paul Thackery."PB's great. The scooters are out of control,” Thackery said. He says some areas along the boardwalk are beginning to look like a scooter graveyard. He has also been hit by several intoxicated scooterists in the last several months. "I can't stand them. I ride my bike down here every day, and scooters are in the way, it's dangerous,” Thackery said. “I think they should get rid of them all together. "This weekend alone, at least two e-scooterists in San Diego were sent to the hospital for severe injuries. San Diego Police said a 39-year-old man fell off a scooter just before 10 pm Saturday in Mission Beach. He suffered life-threatening head injuries. Then at 12:30 am Sunday, just a mile away, a 62-year-old man lost control of his scooter, and crashed into a sidewalk. He suffered a neck fracture and facial abrasions.Since February 2018, two people in San Diego County have even died in scooter crashes. The city of San Diego is now defending against four e-scooter lawsuits that claim the city needed to enforce stronger regulations to prevent collisions and accidents.But in a crowded place like a boardwalk, McKenna says scooters are not the only issue."A person on their bicycle can be just as inconsiderate,” McKenna said. That is why McKenna says it is vital that each rider regulates themselves. We met Tracy Grimmett, a visitor from Modesto, doing a few practice laps before taking off for the first time. “Yes, without running into all the people around here. Yes, trying!” she laughed. She hopes to have fun while being considerate, as they share the busy boardwalk with thousands of weekenders."Be courteous around people, go slow,” McKenna said. “If there's a lot of people, you have to slow down, and you have to give other people the right of way."The city of San Diego is now considering making companies install “geo-fencing” on the scooters. That would automatically slow down the maximum speed of the scooters to 8mph in designated zones, including Mission Beach and Pacific Beach boardwalks. 2750
SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Anglers and biologists believe California is likely to experience an increase of chinook salmon during the fall run resulting from the coronavirus and fewer fish caught during the summer. The San Francisco Chronicle reported state and federal scientists earlier this year forecast more than 473,000 adult salmon off the San Francisco Bay Area coast from the Sacramento River system. The forecast is a big jump from 380,000 last year and 224,000 in 2018.
