BEIJING, Oct. 21 (Xinhua) -- China Thursday expressed its hope that East Asian cooperation would deepen through the upcoming series of leaders' meetings in Hanoi, Vietnam."China attaches importance to and actively takes part in East Asian cooperation. In the series of meetings, China will review with other countries the cooperation that has been carried out and discuss how to further promote the integration process of East Asian cooperation," said Assistant Foreign Minister Hu Zhengyue.Hu made the remarks at a press conference Thursday afternoon in which officials from the ministries of Commerce, Education and Finance briefed the press on Premier Wen Jiabao's scheduled attendance at the meetings.The meetings, lasting from Oct. 28 to 30, will include: the 13th summit between China and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) (10+1); the 13th summit between ASEAN, China, Japan and the Republic of Korea (ROK) (10+3); and the fifth East Asia Summit.Wen will also attend a meeting with the leaders of Japan and the ROK.Hu said China hopes the meetings would promote good-neighborliness and boost cooperation between China and the other Asian countries."During his visit, Premier Wen, together with participating leaders of other countries, will review the achievements of China-ASEAN cooperation, 10+3 cooperation, and East Asian cooperation, as well as cooperation concerning East Asia Summit. He will also elaborate on how to strengthen cooperation. We believe his tour will further consolidate China's good-neighborly relationships and expand reciprocal cooperation," he said."East Asian countries should enhance mutual understanding through dialogue and communication. They should also create the conditions for the sound and stable development of regional cooperation and bilateral relations," Hu said.He also reaffirmed China's support for ASEAN's leading role in East Asian cooperation, saying he hopes the existing cooperation mechanisms serve the overriding goal of regional peace and prosperity.On the economic and trade cooperation front, Director of the Asian Affairs Department of the Ministry of Commerce (MOC) Lu Kejian said China hopes to work with ASEAN to steadily promote the development of the China-ASEAN Free Trade Area (CAFTA) while expanding two-way investment."We will strengthen communication with ASEAN to ensure the stable development of bilateral trade, especially in the services trade. We will also continue to increase imports from ASEAN countries and boost investment. China welcomes ASEAN companies investing in China and will support Chinese companies to invest in ASEAN countries," he said.

BEIJING, Nov. 7 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Hu Jintao on Saturday wrapped up a fruitful visit to France, opening a new chapter in the comprehensive strategic partnership between the two countries.With Hu's three-day visit to France, which started on Thursday, the heads of state and top legislators of the two countries have visited each other's country within one year for the first time.Earlier this year, French President Nicolas Sarkozy and Bernard Accoyer, speaker of the French National Assembly, visited China. China's top legislator Wu Bangguo has also visited France recently.Such a frequent exchange of visits has been rare in the history of bilateral relations.During his stay in France, Hu met Sarkozy on at least five occasions and the two leaders held in-depth consultations on issues concerning bilateral ties and major global affairs.The frequency of their meetings in less than 48 hours reveals the high importance both sides have attached to this visit.On Thursday, China and France issued a joint statement, pledging to strengthen the comprehensive strategic partnership between the two countries.The statement stressed that China and France, both permanent members of the UN Security Council and big economies in the world arena, shoulder special responsibilities, and China-France relations should continue to play an exemplary role.The two sides should establish a new type of partnership and should also deepen their cooperation in international affairs to jointly deal with major global threats, especially the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction and their means of delivery, said the statement.They should also work together to address such hotspot issues as Iran's nuclear program, the denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula and the conflict in Afghanistan, it added.The two sides have also reached consensus on such issues as fighting protectionism, combating climate change, supporting Africa's economic growth and advancing China-EU relations.During Hu's visit, China and France signed a number of cooperation agreements, covering a wide range of areas such as nuclear energy, aviation, finance, energy efficiency, environmental protection, climate change and culture.According to French media's estimates, the total value of the trade and cooperation agreements signed between the two nations during Hu's visit could reach 20 billion euros (about 28.1 billion U.S. dollars).

BEIJING, Sept. 9 (Xinhua) -- Senior Communist Party of China (CPC) leader Li Changchun on Thursday called on teachers to be "role models" for students and lead by example in matters of discipline and integrity.Li, a member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee, made the remarks when watching a performance dedicated to Teachers' Day, which falls on Friday.More than 700 teachers and students, and a dozen "model teachers" selected by Chinese netizens, joined Li to watch the performance.The Ministry of Education organized an election of "model teachers" online beginning August 8. NANJING, Oct. 31 (Xinhua) -- United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon on Sunday urged China to keep moving down the path of sustainable development and put greater emphasis on social equity and environmental sustainability.Addressing students of Nanjing University in east China's Jiangsu Province, Ban said as the world's most populous country with the fastest growing economy, China has become the world's largest manufacturer and exporter but also the greatest emitter of greenhouse gases."Seven of the world's 10 most-polluted cities are in China. Your environmental footprint is growing daily," Ban said, adding that fortunately China is beginning to fight the side-effects of prosperity -- climate change and environmental degradation -- besides poverty.The UN chief noted that many of these development problems were raised during discussions as Chinese leaders recently met to draw the 12th Five-Year Plan for economic and social development of the country from 2010 to 2015.Ban applauded the Chinese government's goal of leading the country into an all-around Xiaokang society, or well-off society, by 2020 and said making Xiaokang a reality will, perhaps, ultimately become China's "great export -- its gift to humankind.""You already have a concept for it...
