HANOI, Dec. 11 (Xinhua) -- Chinese and Vietnamese people kicked off a four-day mass gala here Saturday in Vietnamese capital city of Hanoi to celebrate 60 years of bilateral diplomatic ties.Tong Thi Phong, Secretarty of the Communist Party of Vietnam Central Committee, said at the opening ceremony that bilateral friendly relations between Vietnam and China are the treasure of two peoples, and the two countries have seen strengthened cooperation in various fields in recent years.Phong said the four-day big gathering of the Vietnamese and Chinese people will strengthen mutual understanding between the two countries, enrich bilateral comprehensive strategic cooperative partnership and advance bilateral ties.Chen Haosu, president of the Chinese People's Association for Friendship with Foreign Countries, said at the opening ceremony that China and Vietnam are good and close neighbors.Chen said this year marks the 60th anniversary of the establishment of bilateral diplomatic relations and China-Vietnam Friendship Year. BEIJING, Jan. 5 (Xinhua) -- China vowed Wednesday that it would continue efforts to expand and upgrade its rural power grid networks in the next five years to meet the increasing demand.Safe, environmentally-friendly, and technologically-advanced rural power networks are expected to cover most of the nation's rural areas to ensure better electricity use for rural residents during the country's 12th Five-Year Plan period (2011-2015), according to a statement issued after a State Council executive meeting chaired by Premier Wen Jiabao.Full-fledged power networks are still beyond reach for some rural residents in China's central and western rural regions, despite government moves to expand rural networks beginning in 1998, the statement said.Relevant departments should step up efforts to improve power generation facilities for irrigation and farm produce processing to ensure power consumption of agriculture production, the statement said.Further, participants at the meeting also pledged to slash rural power prices.

BEIJING, Dec. 23 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Hu Jintao appointed a new representative and ambassador to the World Trade Organization(WTO) and a new ambassador to Myanmar, according to a statement from the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress (NPC) on Thursday.Yi Xiaozhun, 59, previously a vice commerce minister, was appointed representative and ambassador to the global trade body, replacing 64-year-old Sun Zhenyu, who was the country's first WTO representative since China's accession to the WTO in Dec. 2001.Li Junhua was appointed ambassador to Myanmar, succeeding the 54-year-old Ye Dabo.Prior to Thursday's appointment, Li was deputy director of the International Organizations and Conferences Department of the Chinese Foreign Ministry.The appointment was in line with the decision made by the Standing Committee of the NPC, China's top legislature.

ISLAMABAD, Dec. 23 (Xinhua) -- Pakistani Acting President and Senate Chairman Farooq Hamid Naek and National Assembly Speaker Fehmida Mirza visited the newly-launched Pakistan-China Friendship Center in Islamabad on Thursday.Naek and Mirza, with the company of Chinese Ambassador to Pakistan Liu Jian, visited the friendship hall, conference rooms and other facilities in the center.They also toured a photography exhibition highlighting the history of the bilateral ties and an exhibition of masterpieces of the Chinese brush painting.In a message left on a guestbook, Naek viewed the friendship center as a symbol of the close friendly brotherly ties between the two countries. The foundation of the center was laid by Wen during his first visit to Pakistan in April 2005.
