Surveillance video captured the moment this week when a bolt of lightning made a direct hit on a home in Daytona Beach, Florida.Cindy Holt's surveillance camera recorded the moment the home's roof was hit by the lightning.She thought her boyfriend, pulling in at the same moment, had an accident."It was huge. It shook the house ... I thought he had actually hit the garage door," said Holt. "It was scary. I just thank God nobody was in the house at the time."Immediately after the strike, they noticed smoke coming from the roof and ran to the scene.A person spoke to the residents of the house to alert them about the lightning strike."You could see the smoke. You could see there was no fire, thank God," said Holt.Firefighters think the home's electrical system is fried.There were several scorch marks in the home's eave and around a light near the garage door.Though lightning struck just the one house, several other nearby residents lost phone and/or internet service."It's scary. Starbucks opened the first of its fancy new Reserve stores Tuesday, as it continues battle competition from upscale coffee brands like Blue Bottle and Intelligentsia.The company said the store, which debuted inside its Seattle headquarters, is the first of 1,000 planned Reserve stores.Starbucks described the store concept as "an open, marketplace style" with a Princi bakery counter, a full liquor bar and a Reserve coffee bar, with tables, lounge areas and two fireplaces."Our Reserve store takes the best of coffee craft as well as artisan baking and layers in a marketplace-style customer experience creating a space that has both energy and moments of intimacy," said Liz Muller, senior vice president of Creative, Global Design & Innovation at Starbucks, in a statement.The company said the new products at the Seattle Reserve store include the Nitro Draft Latte, Spiced Ginger Cold Brew and an espresso drink called Bianco Mocha.Starbucks said that its Reserve rollout, which has been in the works since 2016, will also include 20 to 30 new Roasteries, with locations planned for Milan and New York this year, and in Tokyo and Chicago next year. The company said that some of the new Reserve stores will be converted from existing Starbucks stores.The company said it already has dozens of Reserve bars open in existing Starbucks locations. The Reserve bars are different from the Reserve stores. The company said it also plans to open stand-alone Princi stores in Seattle, Chicago and New York.Starbucks has more than 28,000 stores worldwide, according to its latest earnings report in January. Tap your heels together three times, and you’ll be home.Those were the instructions from Glinda the Good Witch gave to Judy Garland in the 1939 classic The Wizard of Oz.But today, the idea of tapping those ruby slippers together is enough to make conservator Dawn Wallace cringe.“I spent probably over 200 hours just working on the sequins themselves,” says Wallace. “So, I take great care.”Wallace is an objects conservator at the Smithsonian. She’s charged with caring for the famous ruby slippers worn by Garland in the movie.“Every single time I pick up these shoes, they are an American treasure and they are iconic,” says Wallace. “I always feel excited, and I always get a little bit of a thrill knowing that I get to work with these amazing objects.”It’s been a painstaking nearly two-year conservation process, cleaning every bead and realigning every sequin.“The sequins on the toes, they were exposed to light during the filming,” explains Wallace. “So, those have more light damage. So, we do see some fading on some of those sequins.”Wallace also points out there are some beads missing from the shoes, but says it’s, “part of their story.”Wallace cares for all parts of the shoe, right down to the felt soles. She explains the slippers were lined with felt so they make minimal noise during dancing scenes. It’s those scenes that generations of fans, including Wallace, remember vividly.“I think everyone always gets up they click their heels, and they get with their friends and family and they skip arm in arm.,” says Wallace. “And so, I think it—it hits you.”As they return to public display today, they’re doing so amid renewed interest, thanks to the FBI’s announcement last month that they found another pair used in filming. That pair was stolen 13 years ago.In fact, the agency even asked Wallace, who is now an authority on the chemical makeup of the shoes, to examine the recovered pair. She says she felt like a character from another movie.“I almost wanna say it’s a little like Indiana Jones,” recalls Wallace. “It was very thrilling, but it also made me feel very proud knowing I’m helping return these stolen items.”Wallace says she was worried about what the slippers would look like after being stolen over a decade ago, but she says they were recovered in similar condition to the other pair.“Just using a little bit of water and small cotton swabs, being able to remove that dirt just really brought the shine back to the beads,” Wallace says of the restoration process.After a couple of years out of public view, the slippers will now be back on display for fans to see. 2622

(AP) — A bookkeeper who worked at a Southern California high school for nearly three decades is suspected of stealing more than 0,000 from student clubs.The Riverside Press-Enterprise reported Thursday that Virginia Ellen Schaul pleaded not guilty this week to one count of grand theft. The 65-year-old was ordered back to court July 12 and released on her own recognizance.Schaul was fired in 2017 from her longtime job with Temecula Valley High after she failed to show up for a hearing looking into missing money and overdrawn accunts.Prosecutors say over at least a four-year period Schaul took money from accounts used to pay for equipment, uniforms, entry fees, travel fees and other expenses for clubs and teams. 747
