Dr. Anthony Fauci has a stark warning for Americans, reiterating that if our response to the coronavirus does not change, there could be more hospitalizations and deaths.“If things do not change, if they continue on the course we’re on, there’s gonna be a whole lot of pain in this country with regard to additional cases and hospitalizations, and deaths,” Fauci said in an interview Wednesday evening on “The News with Shepard Smith.”Dr. Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, has repeatedly told lawmakers and other news outlets the country’s coronavirus case numbers are going in the “wrong direction.”Cases are rising in almost every state and territory, and coronavirus-positive patients are overwhelming hospitals in some parts of the country.The Midwest is especially hard hit right now, with Wisconsin reporting a 7-day positivity rate of 28 percent. Most municipalities try to keep that number below 5 percent to allow lockdown restrictions to loosen up.Smith asked Fauci if there should be a national mask mandate.“We do. If we don’t get one (national mask mandate) I would hope the governors and the mayors do it locally, if it’s not done nationally,” Fauci responded.Many states across the country have had to tighten stay-at-home restrictions in the last few weeks, putting stricter limits on gathering sizes, indoor business capacities and mask wearing both inside and outside.As of Thursday morning, there are more than 8.8 million confirmed cases of coronavirus since the pandemic started in the U.S., and more than 227,000 deaths.Wednesday alone, nearly 79,000 new people reported testing positive for the coronavirus in this country, and nearly 1,000 people died.“There is very little appetite for a lockdown in this country,” Fauci told Shepard Smith. “There’s going to be major pushback both from above and at the local level, however, what Melbourne did, what Australia did as a country, was very successful.”Melbourne only reopened Wednesday, after residents spent three months under strict lockdown orders.While he doesn’t feel America would be able to commit to something like that, Dr. Fauci suggests being better about mask wearing, social distancing and avoiding crowds.Dr. Fauci’s warning that more pain could come echos warnings from a recent projection that more than half a million Americans could die of the coronavirus by March if there are no changes to our efforts to control the spread of the coronavirus.“We find that achieving universal mask use (95% mask use in public) could be sufficient to ameliorate the worst effects of epidemic resurgences in many states,” the study stated.Researchers found even if 85 percent of universal mask wearing is achieved, an additional 95,000 lives could be saved.According to the study, the national average for self-reported mask wearing is at just 49 percent as of late-September. 2903

EL CAJON, CA (KGTV) -- The Mother Goose Parade is an East County tradition dating back to 1947. But because of the pandemic, this year's parade will look a lot different. The sights and sounds will be virtual, thanks to the hard work of long-time El Cajon business owner, Patti Shryock. Besides running Cameo Janitorial and Paper Supply, she's also a true historian of the Mother Goose Parade."I've been with Mother Goose since 1985," says Shryock. "I love to see Mother Goose out there, and people come up, especially the kids, and hold her. Then you get the parents talking about their memories of the parade, and being in their child's same position. This has been going on now for 74 years."And just like the parade, her business is also a fixture in El Cajon, opening its doors back in 1963. Shryock and her brother took over full operation in the mid-1980's."My dad passed away in 1985, and my mom in 1990. However, they gave us enough background, and we worked enough in the business, where we were able to continue it on," she said.Shryock says over time a lot of hard work and great employees have created a lot of success. But now they are facing an obstacle as they have never seen before, and that would be the COVID-19 pandemic."I never saw it coming," Shryock says.Uncertain times means they've had to think outside the box"Sanitizer wipes, I started making some myself," she added.Shryock and her team at Cameo Janitorial and Paper Supply have persevered to keep the business going. The same can also be said about her effort to keep this year's Mother Goose Parade afloat. EAST COUNTY (CNS) - One person was killed and two people were seriously injured Saturday in a head-on collision in Dulzura, Cal Fire officials said.The collision happened at 6:35 a.m. on state Route 94 near Community Building Road, according to Cal Fire, with one victim taken to a hospital by air ambulance and another by ground ambulance.The California Highway Patrol said a vehicle went off the side of the road about 50 feet down an embankment and was totaled.Traffic on SR-94 was stopped in both directions for several hours while the accident was cleared and investigated. These are the hallmark images of Black Friday.Well, they were.That was before the COVID-19 pandemic gripped the nation. Now, the future of the biggest shopping discount day of the year is unknown.Yes, it will still happenFor many, shopping on the day after Thanksgiving is a tradition. Historically, it’s also one of the best days of the year to save money on big-ticket items like electronics and appliances.But with social distancing the norm, it’s hard to imagine shoppers camping out on the sidewalk next to one another this year ahead of Nov. 27. It’s even more difficult to picture stores overflowing with excited shoppers.Retail experts believe Black Friday will still happen in 2020, despite the pandemic. But there’s no disputing the fact that it won’t be a traditional experience.“Being there at the crack of dawn, waiting in lines, the hustle and bustle in the store — that’s probably not going to exist,” says Jane Boyd Thomas, a professor of marketing at Winthrop University in South Carolina who has done research about Black Friday.Sales will shift further onlineFor years, Black Friday has shifted to online channels, merging with Cyber Monday into a weekend-long event. The pandemic is set to further cement that transition.After months of shelter-in-place orders, consumers have become more comfortable shopping from home. That will likely lead to an increase in online Black Friday purchases this year, says Dora Bock, associate professor of marketing at the Harbert College of Business at Auburn University in Alabama.But the changes could go a step beyond that. COVID-19 has illuminated failings in the supply chain, and Thomas believes many consumers will opt for contactless curbside pickup options (as opposed to shipping to their home) to guarantee that the items they’re buying online are actually available — and not out of stock.Still, that doesn’t necessarily mean stores will be ghost towns.“They want something normal,” Thomas says of some shoppers. “I do think that will drive people to go in to see the lights, to see the trees — all the stuff that goes with that experience.”Doorbusters could be deepEven though the experience will look different, Black Friday discounts might be particularly relevant this year, especially as millions of Americans have faced unemployment and other financial hardships in 2020.While consumers have largely focused on purchasing essential items during the pandemic, Bock anticipates competitive prices on discretionary products like apparel and jewelry.Consumers might also have an appetite for traditional Black Friday categories, such as computers. Thomas expects these discounts will be appealing, considering how critical laptops have become as Americans work, learn and interact virtually from home.“There’s a large number of consumers that look forward to Black Friday because it provides them a sense of excitement,” Bock says. “People feel good when they get a good deal.”Retailers still have some planning to doThere are a number of unanswered questions about how Black Friday will look. After all, retailers are still figuring out how to market the holiday shopping season.One possibility? Black Friday may become an extended period, rather than a single day of sales, says Michael Brown, a partner in the consumer practice of Kearney, a global strategy and management consultant.“I’m expecting that Black Friday as we have grown to know it cannot exist in a COVID world,” Brown says.“I think we have to really not think about Black Friday and think more about when the launch of the holiday season will begin. I think that has to be pulled up by retailers as early as November 1,” he says.Throughout the holiday season, stores will have to perform a delicate dance. Shopping may become just as much about public health as it is about discounts.Retailers have merchandise to sell, but promoting in-store only specials could be seen as insensitive by shoppers with preexisting medical conditions, Bock points out.“I think it’s really going to be a balancing act for retailers to encourage sales, encourage people to buy, encourage trust and promote spending — but promote it in a way that shows they care for their customers’ well-being,” Bock says.There’s one more wild card, Brown says. What type of Black Friday shopping environment will state and local governments allow? Doctors at Henry Ford Health System penned an opened letter on the hospital's study of hydroxychloroquine being used to treat COVID-19.It comes just days after Dr. Anthony Fauci called the study "flawed" while testifying in front of a House subcommittee."As an early hotspot for the COVID-19 pandemic, we have seen and lived its devastating effects alongside our patients and families. Perhaps that’s what makes us even more determined to rally our researchers, front-line care team members and leaders together in boldness, participating in scientific research, including clinical trials, to find the safest care and most effective treatments. While feeling the same sense of urgency everyone else does to recognize a simple, single remedy for COVID-19, we need to be realistic in the time it takes to fully understand the optimal therapy or combination of therapies required of a new virus we are all trying to contain," Dr. Adnan Munkarah and Dr. Steven Kalkanis said in the letter.The study has been among a handful to show positive results of using hydroxychloroquine as a coronavirus medicine. But the FDA has recommended against using the drug outside of a hospital or clinical setting after a number of studies showed the drug was ineffective at treating coronavirus patients. On Friday, Fauci said the study, which has been touted by President Donald Trump and other Republicans, contradicts other studies that found the drug does not effectively treat COVID-19."That study is a flawed study, and I think anyone who examines it carefully is that it is not a randomized placebo-controlled trial," Fauci said. "The most well-accepted and definitive method to determine the efficacy of a treatment is a double-blind, randomized clinical trial.
