Businesses are considering how they'll need to change up their restrooms amid the pandemic.“I do think that most people would agree in the past, even pre-COVID, public restrooms tended not to be the cleanest place in most public venues and this is a real concern given the way germs can be transmitted,” said Steven Soifer, a professor of social work at the University of Mississippi.Across the country, some businesses have been doing quick fixes like taping off sinks or urinals to encourage distancing. Others have been changing up how often the restroom gets cleaned.McDonald’s wants its franchisees to clean their restrooms every 30 minutes.Soifer, who’s also the president of the American Restroom Association, thinks having the cleanings documented would give us all better peace of mind.“A lot of these public bathrooms in the better places have these charts and they tell you the last time the bathroom was cleaned,” Soifer. “I think that should become standard practice. People know they're cleaning the bathroom every half hour, every hour, once a day.”Mcdonald’s is also asking its restaurant owners to put in foot pulls so people can open the restroom door without touching it, automatic paper towel dispensers and touchless sinks.Soifer is hoping these guidelines will set the standard for other businesses.The American Restroom Association advocates for single stall, enclosed private restrooms, like we see more of in Europe. But they acknowledge this would be a big expense for businesses.Cheaper, more immediate fixes they suggest are putting hand sanitizer in addition to soap by the sink or even in the stall. 1641

ATLANTA, Ga. – The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is warning of a Salmonella outbreak linked to contact with pet turtles. The CDC says at least 21 people across 13 states have been infected with the outbreak strain Salmonella Oranienburg, seven of which have been hospitalized. No deaths have been reported though. “Epidemiologic and traceback evidence” indicate that contact with pet turtles is the likely source of the outbreak, according to the CDC. The agency says 12 of 17 ill people interviewed reported coming in contact with red-eared sliders and other turtles that were larger than four inches in length.The CDC says illnesses started on dates ranging from May 29 to Sept. 3. Ill people range in age from less than one year old to 80 years old, with the median age being 24. Turtles can carry Salmonella germs in their droppings while appearing healthy and clean. The CDC says those germs can easily spread to their bodies, tank water and habitats. People can get sick after they touch a turtle or anything in their habitats. Salmonella symptomsMost people infected with Salmonella develop diarrhea, fever and stomach cramps 12 to 72 hours after being exposed to the bacteria.The illness usually lasts four to seven days and officials say most people recover without treatment. However, the illness may be so severe in some patients that they need to be hospitalized. The infection can spread to the intestines to the bloodstream and then other places in the body. Another round of tornadoes, damaging winds and hail is expected to start Wednesday, posing a severe risk from the Texas Panhandle to the coast of the Carolinas.The three-day event will unfold across about 1,400 miles, including parts of the Southeast and Mid-Atlantic that got battered over the weekend by severe storms.As the system treks east, parts of the Southeast could experience severe weather Thursday, with a large swath of the East Coast on track to feel impacts on Friday.Storms first target the central United StatesStorms are due to begin Wednesday in the middle of the country, with the most significant threat stretching from central-southeastern Texas to southern Kansas.Large hail and isolated tornadoes are concerns for places including Dallas and Austin, Texas, and Oklahoma City.Those areas already face an "enhanced risk" of severe thunderstorms -- the third of five risk levels -- according to the National Weather Service's Storm Prediction Center.The storms, expected to organize Wednesday afternoon across the southern Plains, will become more widespread in the evening and into the night.The biggest concern is the potential for large hail, possibly 2 inches or more in diameter. Boxer George Foreman's daughter Freeda was 42 years old when she died this past weekend. She was found unresponsive, and a report from authorities in Texas say indications are it was suicide as she was found hanged.There was no suspicion of foul play.The final, official cause has not been announced by a coroner.
