SAN DIEGO — (KGTV) -- Democrat Sara Jacobs continues to hold a double-digit lead over Democrat Georgette Gomez in the race for California's 53rd Congressional District, according to a new scientific poll.The ABC-10News Union-Tribune scientific poll shows Jacobs leading Gomez 40 percent to 27 percent, with 33 percent still undecided. The two Democrats are vying to replace Susan Davis, who is retiring in the central and south San Diego district after nearly 20 years. The poll shows Jacobs, granddaughter of Qualcomm founder Irwin Jacobs, leading in support from those who describe themselves as liberal, moderate, conservative, and very conservative. Gomez, currently the City Council president, is generating most of her support from voters who describe themselves as very liberal."With only two weeks left to go until the election, Georgette Gomez is running out of time to close the gap on Sara Jacobs," said Thad Kousser, a political scientist at UC San Diego.Kousser said the closer the election gets, the harder it will be for Gomez to catch up, because of the increase in mail-in ballots and early voting. The poll shows 26 percent of the respondents already sent in their ballots. Kousser said, however, that Jacobs still has not reached the 50 percent support threshold, leaving the door open for Gomez, who will have to convince most of the undecideds to support her. "She hasn't been making substantial progress at the same time that she's being hugely outspent on the airwaves by Sara Jacobs," he said. Federal Election data shows Jacobs outspent Gomez nearly 5 to 1 through Sept. 30.In an interview, Jacobs said she would not rest on polling."I worked on the 2016 presidential campaign so I love seeing good polls but I will continue working very hard for every last vote," she said. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A fire that erupted in the attic of a Rancho Penasquitos home early Monday displaced seven residents, but nobody was hurt.The blaze was reported shortly after 12:45 a.m. at the two-story house in the 8400 block of Corte Fragata, off Carmel Mountain Road north of state Route 56, according to the San Diego Fire-Rescue Department.One person in the home told dispatchers the residents smelled smoke and saw smoke coming from the attic, SDFRD spokeswoman Monica Munoz said. Crews knocked down the fire within 25 minutes and kept the flames contained to the attic area, but the house sustained smoke damage, she said.The American Red Cross was called in to help the displaced residents -- four adults and three children -- arrange for temporary lodging.The cause of the fire was under investigation. 821

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A 21-year-old bitcoin dealer from Baja California was ordered held without bail Friday in connection with a 31-count indictment charging him with international money laundering and other financial crimes related to his digital-currency transactions.Jacob Burrell Campos, of Rosarito, was arrested Monday as he tried to enter the U.S. from Mexico through Otay Mesa Port of Entry.During a bond hearing Friday in federal court in San Diego, Assistant U.S. Attorney Robert Ciaffa described Burrell as a prolific bitcoin dealer who sold about 0,000 worth of the cryptocurrency to hundreds of buyers throughout the United States.The defendant conducted 971 transactions with more than 900 customers, accepting cash in person, through his bank accounts and via MoneyGram, according to prosecutors.As a bitcoin "exchanger" whose activities constituted a money- transmitting business, Burrell was required to register with the U.S. Department of Treasury and comply with all anti-money-laundering requirements, including reporting suspicious cash transactions, Ciaffa told U.S. Magistrate Judge Karen Crawford.Burrell, however, accepted cash "with no questions asked" and, in return for a 5 percent fee, supplied hundreds of people with an easy way to evade money-laundering laws applicable to all financial institutions, even those dealing in bitcoin, the assistant U.S. attorney alleged.Burrell's activities "blew a giant hole" through the framework of U.S law by soliciting and introducing into the nation's banking system close to million in unregulated cash, Ciaffa said.Burrell, charged with 28 counts of money laundering, sent 28 wire transfers totaling over 0,000 from his bank accounts in the U.S. to a bank account in Taiwan in the name of Bitfinex, according to the indictment.The defendant resorted to buying bitcoin through Bitfinex, a Hong Kong cryptocurrency exchange, after his account was closed by a U.S.-based bitcoin exchange for circumventing its identification-verification processes.The defendant, who was born in San Diego, allegedly conspired with others to smuggle over million in U.S. currency into the U.S. from Mexico in amounts slightly less than ,000 in order to avoid currency-reporting requirements.In all, the indictment charges the defendant with operating an illegal money-transmitting business, international money laundering, failing to maintain an anti-money-laundering program and conspiracy to structure monetary transactions.In ordering Burrell held without bail, the judge found that he posed a substantial risk of flight due to his significant ties to Mexico, citizenship in three countries, access to large sums of cash, lack of steady employment in the U.S. and alleged disdain for American laws. 2774

SAN DIEGO — A San Diego-based stem cell research institute believes its discovery may have saved the life of a COVID patient on death's doorstep.GIOSTAR infused a 53-year-old man in a coma with Mesenchymal stem-cells taken from an umbilical cord. Prior to that, all other treatments were failing. "He was having a stroke, he was under dialysis, liver function was declining," said Dr. Anand Srivastava, co-founder of GIOSTAR. "Nothing was working."The patient, whose identity is not being released due to privacy laws, had been in a coma in a New Jersey hospital. GIOSTAR got special clearance from the Food and Drug Administration to try the stem-cell treatment. Srivastava said the patient began to recover, gradually over three weeks. "Slowly, his renal and liver function came closer to normal," he said. "He came out from the intubation, and now he is talking."The family, in an interview with GIOSTAR, said they had lost all hope. Srivastava said this treatment could be key as society awaits a vaccine. GIOSTAR is planning to do a double-blind study to confirm its conclusions about its treatment.
