LOS ANGELES, June 4 (Xinhua) -- U.S.-China relations are improving on the back of their need for mutual support after undergoing a rocky period earlier this year, U.S. Congressman Adam Schiff said here Friday.The bilateral relationship came under pressure due to U.S. arms sales to Taiwan, the ** Lama's U.S. visit and tensions in the Korean Peninsula, but the overall situation was good and the bilateral cooperation was at a very high level, the Democratic congressman from California told a Chinese press club luncheon.Schiff said he didn't think the current tensions on the Korean Peninsula would have a serious impact on U.S. relations with China.He said both countries needed each other's support in forums such as the six-party talks to resolve the issue of nuclear proliferation on the peninsular.The United States also needed China's cooperation in developing alternative and green energy. The two nations could not simply compete with each other on this front, but needed to learn from each other, he said.Schiff sponsored the Nuclear Forensics and Attribution Act to strengthen the U.S. Department of Homeland Security's efforts in developing techniques for "fingerprinting" nuclear material and encouraged U.S. President Barack Obama to negotiate international agreements to govern international nuclear forensics activities.Schiff is also leading the effort to combat intellectual property theft. He is a co-chair of the Congressional International Anti-Piracy Caucus, a bipartisan group of House and Senate lawmakers dedicated to working with America's international trading partners to secure the enactment of strong copyright laws as well as their vigilant enforcement.Schiff said Hollywood movies are popular in China and the movie industry is one of the few sectors enjoying a trade surplus.He said it was important for the U.S. to strengthen its efforts to fight piracy, admitting that in this field, the United States and China had many concerns.

XIANGNING, Shanxi, March 29 (Xinhua) -- Almost 1,000 rescuers were racing the clock through the drizzle Monday to pump water and reach the 153 people trapped underground in a flooded coal mine in north China's Shanxi Province.Altogether 261 workers were in the pit of Wangjialing Coal Mine, which was under construction, when underground water gushed in at about 1:40 p.m. Sunday. Although 108 were lifted safely to the ground, 153 others were trapped in the shaft. Rescuers carry pipes at the site of a flooding accident of Wangjialing Coal Mine, sitting astride Xiangning County of Linfen City and Hejin City of Yuncheng City, in north China's Shanxi Province, on March 29, 2010."Currently, more than 970 people are participating in the rescue operation," said Liu Dezheng, a spokesman of the rescue headquarters and deputy director of the General Office with the Shanxi Provincial Work Safety Committee, at a news conference late Monday."If everything goes smoothly, with the installation of two more high-power pumps, it is expected that 650 cubic meters of water can be pumped out of the shaft per hour tonight, and 2,000 cubic meters per hour tomorrow," he said.Previously, six pumps had been used to pump up to 300 cubic meters of water per hour around the clock.But Liu also pointed out that complicated conditions underground could hamper the operation."The coal mine has a high concentration of gas. Rescuers have to face the danger of toxic gas, while fighting the water," he said. Ltd., is a major project approved by the provincial government. It is expected to produce 6 million tonnes of coal annually once in operation.Earlier this month, 32 workers were killed in a similar accident when underground water flooded a mine being built in north China's Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region.One worker died after being lifted to the ground and 31 others were presumed dead two weeks after the accident happened on March 1.Rescue work, which took 14 days and involved 20,384 people, was halted on March 14 when those trapped were believed to have no chance of survival.

Taipei, April 25 (Xinhua) -- Signing the cross-Strait economic and trade pact, ECFA, will benefit Taiwan, Taiwan leader Ma Ying-jeou said here Sunday in a television debate.Ma debated with the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) Chairwoman Tsai Ing-wen during a two-hour televised debate over the economic cooperation framework agreement (ECFA), a free trade agreement the Taiwan authority intends to sign with the Chinese mainland.Taiwan urgently needs a trade pact with China to usher in a golden decade of economic boom, Ma said, accusing DPP of exaggerating the adverse effects of ECFA and manipulating public fear.Lee Tung-Hao, a professor with the National Chengchi University, said there are different voices over ECFA because of public misunderstanding of the pact, but the debate will help build consensus.The ECFA, a priority in cross-Strait relations, is aimed at institutionalizing economic cooperation between the mainland and Taiwan and facilitating and regularizing economic and trade exchanges.
