BOCA RATON, Fla. - Inside Boca Helping Hands, Mel Lazerick mans the pantry desk and hands out apples and bags of produce."I like to do things for other people because I've been fortunate," said Mel, who has devoted most of his life volunteering.At 100-years-old, Mel is the oldest volunteer and donates his time to help feed the hungry three days a week. Executive Director Greg Hazle describes Mel as an inspiration."Just to be active at that age and active helping people is an inspiring way to live," Hazle said.Mel has been handing out groceries at Boca Helping Hands for 20 years with a smile and a sense of humor."I worked it in with my golf and tennis, and I was able to find time," Mel said. "People are very nice to me, and I try to be nice to them."Mel moved from Ohio years ago and settled in South Florida. He recently celebrated his 100th birthday at Helping Hands, and has worked side-by-side with long-time buddy Harold Bader."He's very well-liked. He's very hard-working, even though he's 100," said Bader, who picks Mel up and drives him home. "It made me realize age has nothing to do with your abilities to do things, and he proves that every day.Mel has been volunteering for decades. He joined Big Brothers and Big Sisters more than 70 years ago, and he still keeps in contact with his two younger brothers."One is 65-years-old and one is 92," Mel said.Now, Mel will be honored for his service on October 20, when Boca Helping Hands will celebrate its volunteers. Thursday’s action ends longstanding federal safeguards for the predators in the Lower 48 states, except for a small population of Mexican gray wolves in the Southwest. The announcement just days ahead of the election could allow hunting of the animals to resume in Great Lakes states -- a battleground region in the presidential race between President Donald Trump and former Vice President Joe Biden. Gray wolves have recovered from near extinction in parts of the country but remain absent from much of their historical range. BRUCE, Wis. -- A school district in Wisconsin has made the decision to ban backpacks after multiple threats were discovered this week.WEAU-TV in Eau Claire, Wisconsin reports that a BB gun and several knives were located in a backpack at a school in Bruce Wednesday after a student scratched graffiti on a bathroom stall door. That student was taken into custody and has been suspended indefinitely.Earlier in the week, on Monday, there was a separate incident involving 'violent threats' made toward the school, WEAU says.With those threats in mind, Bruce Public Schools announced in a call to parents that backpacks would no longer be allowed at either the middle school or high school."Due the circumstances this week, no backpacks are allowed in middle school and high school as recommended by the sheriff’s department. All athletic gym bags will be searched before entering school," the district said in a Facebook post.The district's superintendent tells WEAU that in addition to the backpack ban, there will be a new entrance procedure when students comes back from spring break as well.  1123

BALTIMORE, M.D. - Some voters may be riding in style when they cast their vote on Election Day, courtesy of local funeral homes who offering up their limousines."The focus is on the seniors but will still provide for those who call," said Dr. Henri P. Close II. "We know it's fancy and that's why we're doing it be the real issue is to get you out there to vote."Dr. Close owns Henri P. Close Funeral Service in Baltimore and is also the president of The National Funeral Directors & Morticians Association."Funeral directors have always been the quiet ones in the background," said Dr. Close. "We were always the Underground Railroad. Our limousines and our cars were always used, even when you go back to Selma when you go back to Montgomery. The funeral directors always provided transportation because people didn’t have that mode of transportation. The funeral home always had that mode of transportation."Close said the goal of NFDMA is to offer free rides to 300,000 registered voters in Baltimore, Miami, Detroit, Los Angeles, and Kansas City."Some people are using their Mercedes," said Close. "Some people are using their sedans; some are using sprinters. Even though it might be huge it’s a limited number of people we're transporting at a time."According to the organization, the initiative has helped Baltimoreans get to the polls for 25 years, with ridership peaking on election days in 2008 and 2012.Talking with WMAR, Dr. Close emphasized that transportation is more crucial this year as people attempt to vote safely during the pandemic."There are fewer polling places," he said. "so there is a need for transportation. Now we're the above-ground railroad to get people to the polls, no matter where they stand on issues."Because of COVID-19, the vehicles will be sanitized before and after voters get in. Face masks are required for both drivers and passengers. BRANDON, Fla. -- A Florida woman says someone threw some type of acid on the side of her 2002 Ford Explorer that was parked outside a Kmart in Brandon. Glenda Banfield said she was in the store for about an hour when she came out to find the paint on her car bubbling. "My paint was down to the metal," she said, "I rubbed my hand down over it and it just came off in flakes."Banfield was parked in a disabled parking space in the front row towards the entrance of the store. "I wish I would have just stayed home," said Banfield.Banfield, who lives on disability, is on a fixed-income and took the car in for a repair estimate, "they said it would be at least ,500."  703
