(KGTV) -- Police are investigating after a man was shot and killed before crashing into the side of a building in Chula Vista Wednesday afternoon. According to police, the initial call came in around noon as a drunk driver. Witnesses reported seeing a man in a tan SUV slumped over and followed him.Police say the SUV then slammed into a gate and crashed into the side of a self-storage building traveling roughly 10 to 15 miles per hour on Industrial Boulevard near L Street.When police arrived, they discovered that the man was dead inside the vehicle. Police confirmed later in the day Wednesday that the man was shot. Shortly before the crash, witnesses in the area reported hearing gunshots. Investigators are currently working to get surveillance video from the self-storage facility. Police are also asking that anyone with information on a possible suspect contact them.  932

While it may look different to us, for preschool kids, this is all they know.At St. Rose of Lima Catholic School in Chula Vista, when a student and his or her parent arrive, they go through a health screening. If either shows symptoms, the child is sent home.Adults are also not allowed to come into the classrooms and have to stay outside.Glenda Martinez, preschool director of Daniel’s Den, on the campus of St. Rose of Lima Catholic School, said following the new California guidelines is manageable, what can be challenging is helping her young students understand the rules.“It’s really hard for them to understand what’s six feet. They say, ‘Ms. Glenda, I can’t do six feet, I only have two!’ I tell them I know that … but that’s what the square is ... that’s six feet. And nobody can go into their square,” said Martinez.And that’s reflected in how she set up her room. Even though they can’t do carpet time right now, she tried to bring imagination and fun back into the classroom.Each student has their own desk or car, that’s parked in their own square, with their own things inside.Right now, sharing isn’t allowed, but she’s found a way to allow them to socialize safely.“Because they have the same toys, I tell them you can play with one toy. I can play with the same kind of toy up to our edge with our masks on. And there’s not a problem, they’re still separating but they can play the same thing,” Martinez said.Another challenge for Martinez and her staff is explaining what the coronavirus is to four-year-old children. That’s why she’s made books to help them understand and they also sing songs.Coronavirus guidelines have also changed the way kids play outside. They can’t use certain equipment because of social distancing concerns.But as Martinez said, this has forced them to get creative.In the end, Martinez said they’re using these changes as an opportunity to teach their students valuable lessons. "I think this is just everything for this community, right now we're really the only ones investing down here in the South Bay, in Chula Vista," says Matt Teichner, Sharp Chula Vista Senior Project Manager."Everyone who comes in here gets seen regardless of your ability to pay, we see people from both sides of the border here, and we are just full to the brim every day right now."It will be the first new hospital in San Diego's South Bay in more than 40 years.Planners say patient safety and infection control was the number one factor when designing the new hospital. The new hospital features advanced operating rooms as well as innovative technologies. The new hospital is Sharp HealthCare's largest single investment to-date at 4 million.Construction is scheduled to be complete by August and then a grand opening a few months later. 1054

CHULA VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) - In August, Dean Riggott watched as his wife Karen fell off a Bird Scooter, her head crashing into the pavement. "It's been the most traumatic experience in my entire life," said Dean.Doctors initially told Dean that his wife likely wouldn't survive; she fractured her skull in 10 different places and was in a coma. "They were asking me to quite honestly start to get stuff in order, they didn't feel she would make it out of the first few days," remembers Dean.But each day, Karen continued to beat the odds. By day 32 she was out of the coma and began to show movement in her hands and feet. Weeks later, she was in rehab beginning to walk. "I didn't really know exactly what happened and I was in pain, I still am in pain, but I'm capable of moving, and my memory is good!" said Karen.After 69 days in the hospital and rehab, Karen was finally able to go home on Friday. "I'm the happiest man on this planet. I tell her every day thank you for being my wife, every day. I'm the most fortunate man in the world, I get to keep loving her," said Dean. Karen says each of her milestones gives her more hope and strength.She'll continue her recovery in rehab. 1195

CINCINNATI -- The University of Cincinnati will pay former UC police officer Ray Tensing 4,000 in back pay and legal fees, the university president wrote Thursday.Tensing was the police officer who shot and killed Sam DuBose during a traffic stop in 2015. UC fired Tensing on July 29, 2015. However, the police union contract states that employees charged with a felony may be placed on paid leave until the court case is resolved. Tensing brought a contractual grievance to the university regarding his termination, according to UC President Neville Pinto.UC agreed to pay Tensing 4,230 in back pay and benefits for Tensing and 0,000 for his legal fees to resolve the grievance. In return, Tensing agreed to resign his position as a university law enforcement officer and to never return to employment at UC. "I realize this agreement will be difficult for our community," Neville wrote in a letter announcing the agreement. "I am nevertheless hopeful that we can focus on supporting each other as members of the same Bearcat family — even, perhaps especially, if we don’t agree."The case prompted Black Lives Matter Cincinnati and other groups to organize marches and rallies as the community waited to hear if Tensing would face charges and, later, what jurors would decide. "The tragic loss of Samuel Dubose in July 2015 was a trying time in the life of our University," Pinto wrote Thursday. "Our community came together to mourn, listen, support, heal and hope. That work continues as we strive to live our values into action."Authorities charged Tensing with murder and voluntary manslaughter in DuBose's death. However, two juries were unable to reach a unanimous verdict, prompting a judge to declare two mistrials in the case before the charges were dropped.?After DuBose's death, Hamilton County Prosecutor Joe Deters had dismissed Tensing's reason for stopping DuBose off campus -- a missing front license plate -- calling it a "chicken-crap stop."
