SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The number of 16-24 year olds looking for jobs is rising across the country, almost getting back to the level it was at before the recession.According to numbers from the Bureau of Labor Statistics, 20.89 million teens and young adults had jobs in the summer of 2017. That made it the 7th straight year of employment growth in that industry.Similarly, the unemployment rate for people aged 16-24 fell for the 7th straight year. It was at 9.6%, the lowest it had been since 2000. While there still aren't as many teens and young adults working as there was in the 1950's, 60's and 70's, it's a sign that more are looking for, and finding jobs."I'm Saving for a Car"Like many of his peers, Coronado High School Junior Quinn Perez plans to work this summer. He already has a job lined up at Holland's Bicycles."I've worked there for about 2 years now and I've worked my wya up to one of the manager positions," Quinn says.His goal is simple, to save enough for a car."I've always been a fan of Camaros," he says, before adding, "But I'll probably go for a Honda or Jetta or something like that. A little more in my price range."Other students just like having their own money to spend, like Anna Hinz, who is still looking for a job for the summer."It makes me feel like I have a little control over everything I do, rather than my parents making plans for me.""It's all about the attitude"But for the people who do the hiring, why you're working can be as big of an indicator of success as anything.Patti Woods is the Talent Acquisition Supervisor for the YMCA. She oversees hiring of around 1,500 teens and young adults each summer to work as counselors and lifeguards.She says your attitude is as important as anything else."Skills can be learned," she says. "I want people who are positive, flexible and willing to take feedback."Woods advises teens and young adults to start their job search early. The YMCA does most of their summer hiring in the spring, because they have thousands of applicants to consider."Don't think you need to wait for the summer to find a summer job," she says. If you wait for summer, a lot of those jobs will be gone already."Woods says the Y still has some open positions. Other fields, like retail and restaurants still have lots of openings as well. A recent search of sites like jobs.com and Monster.com for the keywords "Teen Jobs, San Diego" turned up hundreds of jobs. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — This week, thousands of letters, pictures, and cards from local groups were sent to veterans who were not able to visit memorials in their honor this year due to the pandemic.Honor Flight San Diego usually takes veterans to visit memorials in Washington D.C. built in their honor. This year, due to the coronavirus pandemic, that flight won't take to the sky again until May 2021.Organizers had collected 3,000 letters and cards from local Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, church organizations, and the national organization, Solider Angels, for previously scheduled flights.In San Diego, 120 San Diego County WWII and Korean War veterans were sent care packages on Friday. Two of those packages were hand-delivered to local veterans by Honor Flight San Diego Founder Dave Smith and Chairman Julie Brightwell.Honor Flight is a trip at no cost to veterans and has taken more than 1,400 WWII and Korean War veterans in San Diego across the country to visit war memorials. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - There’s now a bombshell update about the standoff from earlier this summer at a condo complex near SDSU.Two officers were shot and dozens of neighbors were terrorized. 10News Investigative Reporter Jennifer Kastner has confirmed that officers wanted to search the suspect’s home for weapons days before the shooting.However, the Office of the San Diego County District Attorney did not attempt to get a search warrant. It was a horrifying night that ended with one person dead and two San Diego Police officers wounded by gunfire. Suspect Joseph Darwish died in the massive standoff.He had numerous hand guns and rifles, according to police. In the days after the shooting, 10News was tipped off by a law enforcement source that the FBI’s Joint Terrorism Task Force had wanted to search Darwish's home because they thought he had a weapon and was buying parts to make more weapons.Darwish wasn't supposed to own any weapons because of his criminal history. Our source says the FBI asked the District Attorney's Office to sign off on having a judge issue a search warrant, but the DA’s Office did not do so.For the past 7 weeks, 10News has been trying to confirm this with the DA’s Office.After our 10News attorneys got involved, the DA’s Office sent us a letter reading in part, “On June 13, 2018, the San Diego County District Attorney's Office received a request by law enforcement to review a draft of an affidavit in support of a search warrant to conduct a search of Mr. Darwish's person, property and residence. The District Attorney's Office determined that the warrant was legally deficient and so advised law enforcement.”June 13th was 10 days before the big shooting. 10News asked law enforcement expert and former police officer Kevin LaChapelle what "legally deficient" means. “It means that the District Attorney's Office felt that there was insufficient evidence or insufficient information that a judge would not grant a search warrant,” he explained.10News asked the DA’s Office why it turned down the FBI’s request to do a search warrant, but the DA’s Office will not answer that question, stating it's "exempt from disclosure".LaChapelle said this may have been a lesson learned the hard way, for the DA’s Office. He explained that the DA’s Office may reevaluate when it’s appropriate to seek a warrant. “It may help them start saying [a warrant] didn't meet [certain] criteria but it met this.It didn't meet a [level] 10 but it was at like a 7 and gosh, maybe [the DA’s Office needs] to start looking at this more so we can prevent these kinds of things,” he added. The FBI declined to comment about Monday’s story. San Diego Police have taken the lead on investigating the shootout. As of Monday morning, a lieutenant with the Homicide division said the investigation is still open and active and will probably take another couple of months to finish. 2913
