DENVER, Colo. — A toddler, child, and three adults died in a house fire in Denver where arson and homicide are suspected, according to initial reports from the Denver Fire Department and Denver Police Department.Around 2:40 a.m. Wednesday, a Denver police officer called the fire department to report smoke along the 5300 block of N. Truckee Street, said Capt. Greg Pixely with the Denver Fire Department. This call was followed shortly afterward with several residents calling 911 about a fire in the neighborhood, which is near the southeast corner of Rocky Mountain Arsenal National Wildlife Refuge.Pixley said police arrived to the home, located at 5312 Truckee Drive, around 2:55 a.m. and made a valiant effort to try to help the people still inside from the "very significant fire."He said the officer who attempted to rescue people from the home was pushed back due to the heat from the fire.Pixley said according to initial reports, a toddler, child and three adults died in the fire and all five were found on the lower part of the home. Three people who had been on the second story of the building were able to evacuate on their own. Pixley said firefighters reported that the individuals jumped from the second story. Their injuries are unknown.DPD Division Chief Joe Montoya said evidence indicates this was an arson, so police will investigate the case along with the fire department. Montoya said he's unable to discuss details about the evidence as of Wednesday morning.Montoya said he believes there was one person who was near the front of the home whom police were able to retrieve but it was too late.Pixley said firefighters worked to reduce the threat of the fire spreading to the two neighboring houses. DETROIT — A clash between Detroit police and protesters was caught on camera Sunday night.Video shared on Twitter shows a group of protesters marching near Waterman and Vernor Highway in Detroit. The peaceful demonstrators surrounded a police cruiser, which pulls forward and into a group of protesters.Some protesters jumped onto the hood of the vehicle as it pulled forward.Leo Alvarado, who was at a nearby gas station, witnessed the altercation."Just so happened to be getting out with my wife when we heard a bunch of screaming and turned around, and cops were plowing through the crowd or started to drive through the crowd," Alvarado said. "Craziness. I've never seen anything like that in my life. Hopefully never again have to see anything like that."Alvarado said a medic treated cuts and wounds that were on demonstrators' arms. DETROIT — After plate umpire Quinn Wolcott was struck in the shoulder by a fastball from a Detroit Tigers pitcher during a baseball game this week, Major League Baseball is reviewing the incident.The pitch from Buck Farmer went past the mitt of backup catcher John Hicks when it hit Wolcott in the game against the Cleveland Indians, the Associated Press reports. (KGTV) — A North County photographer captured five great white sharks swimming about 50 yards off the coast of Del Mar on Thursday.Jedd Wasson, of Del Mar, said he was on the lookout for the sharks as he flew his drone in the area. To his surprise, he not only spotted one, but in total, five juvenile great white sharks calmly gliding through the waters just offshore."So I was actually purposely finding them because I'd been hearing reports of them in Del Mar around 11th Street," Wasson told ABC 10News reporter Steve Smith. "I was surprised at how many there were. I was expecting just a couple but sometimes I would just follow it on the screen and then another one would appear in the frame. I'm like, 'Oh wow, there is quite a lot of sharks here.'"The sharks appeared to be about 8-feet long, Wasson said."I've seen one myself while I was paddleboarding so I can approximate the size, but usually the juveniles tend to come in closer to shore which is what I saw from the drone," Wasson said.Expert Ralph Collier, of the Shark Research Institute, confirmed the sharks appeared to be juvenile great white sharks. Collier added that, before swimmers get too worried, the clarity in the water should help the sharks better distinguish between person or prey. But swimmers should still be cautious."The one I saw was just cruising along the reef then it darted away, so I'm not concerned it's out to get me. DEER SPRINGS, Calif. (KGTV) — One person died in a fire that destroyed two trailers and a garage in the unincorporated Escondido area on Saturday.The fire was reported just after 2:30 p.m. in the 9800 block of Rocky Ridge Road at Sage Glen Trail in Deer Springs, according to CAL FIRE San Diego.San Diego Sheriff's deputies arrived at the scene to find fire crews actively trying to douse the flames. The 71-year-old homeowner told deputies he just arrived home from fishing before hearing a loud explosion as he was left the garage.The explosion caused a fire that spread throughout the garage and to some adjacent trailers, deputies say. The blaze destroyed two residential trailers and the detached garage.All residents were account for except man, who was later found dead inside one of the trailers, according to the Sheriff's Department. The victim's identity was not immediately released.Sheriff's Bomb and Arson detectives were working to determine the origin and cause of the fire. 998
