SAN DIEGO (CNS) - With regional intensive-care unit capacity still officially considered to be zero, Gov. Gavin Newsom said Monday the regional stay-at-home order imposed by the state for the entirety of Southern California will almost assuredly be extended beyond next week's expiration date."We are likely, I think it's pretty self-evident, going to need to extend those regional dates," Newsom said. "... Based upon all the data and based upon all these trend lines, it is very likely based on those current trends that we'll need to extend that stay at home order, (which) you recall was a three-week order when we announced it."The regional stay-at-home order for the 11-county Southern California region took effect at 11:59 p.m. Dec. 6, and was originally set to end on Dec. 28. Newsom did not give an indication of exactly when a decision on extending the order will be made, or much long the order will remain in place.The Southern California region covers Los Angeles, Orange, Riverside, San Diego, Imperial, Inyo, Mono, San Bernardino, San Luis Obispo, Santa Barbara and Ventura counties. Most broadly, the order bars gatherings of people from different households.Under the order, the following businesses/recreational facilities were forced to close:-- indoor recreational facilities-- hair salons and barbershops-- personal care services-- museums, zoos, and aquariums-- movie theaters-- wineries-- bars, breweries and distilleries-- family entertainment centers-- cardrooms and satellite wagering-- limited services-- live audience sports-- amusement parksSchools with waivers can remain open, along with "critical infrastructure" and retail stores, which will be limited to 20% of capacity. Restaurants are restricted to takeout and delivery service only. Hotels are allowed to open "for critical infrastructure support only," while churches would be restricted to outdoor only services. Entertainment production -- including professional sports -- would be allowed to continue without live audiences.Four of the five regions carved out by the state are under stay-at-home orders, covering 98% of the state's population. Only far northern California is not under a stay-at-home order.The order was triggered in each area when the region's ICU bed availability dropped below 15%. As of Monday, the Southern California and San Joaquin Valley regions both had an official ICU bed availability of 0%. That percentage does not mean that there aren't any ICU beds available, since the state adjusts the number based on the ratio of COVID-19 patients being housed in the units. 2594

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A coffee shop owner in City Heights has planted a handful of coffee trees in his garden. He plans to be at the forefront of the "small-batch coffee" movement growing across San Diego."I'm learning more and more about coffee, and it's just becoming way more intriguing to me, and it's fascinating," says Justin Boone, the owner of Burly and the Bean.Boone says he planted his first tree about 18 months ago, after talking to friends about the idea. He got more interested as he heard of local farms planting the trees in large quantities."I guess it's a little risky," says Boone, "because I really don't know what the outcome is going to be."Boone says his trees won't produce enough beans to harvest for another 2-3 years. But he's excited to taste the first cup from his crop.Meanwhile, coffee is becoming a trendy new crop across the County.Frinj Coffee currently manages around a dozen farms in San Diego that have planted coffee trees. His business has already grown beyond his coffee shop, as he now runs a roasting plant up the street. He says he's trying to make the neighborhood a more inviting place to live."When my wife and I moved here, we were waking on the weekends, and we thought, 'There's nothing to walk to in our neighborhood. There's nothing around. There's no coffee,"' he explains. "I'm really just trying to pull this community together and kind of show light to our neighborhood." 2072

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Voting in San Diego County Tuesday has been a relatively smooth experience, even with higher-than-normal turnout, a San Diego County spokesman said.Michael Workman, county communications director, said workers at the Registrar of Voters have been very busy. While official numbers were not available Tuesday afternoon, the county has received 430,000 mail-in ballots out of 1.2 million sent out, according to the Registrar of Voters.As of Monday, early voter turnout was "pretty robust," Workman said.RELATED: Election error: Voters left off roster at polling placeWorkman said polling places will probably be especially busy between 4:30 p.m. and 8 p.m., when they close.Between the various races and state propositions, "this is a very long ballot," Workman said. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A family of five was displaced after a fire erupted in their City Heights kitchen Tuesday.The fire began in the kitchen of a home in the 3700 block of 41st St. According to San Diego Fire-Rescue Capt. Juan Flores, the fire appeared to begin accidentally in the cooking area as food was being prepared.Six units responded, keeping the fire isolated to the kitchen of the residence, Flores added.The family, two adults and three children, were displaced by the fire. The Red Cross is currently helping them.No other units on the property were damaged. 576
