KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Plaza Academy teacher Justin Gillespie is bringing hip hop production to his classroom.The class is called ‘The Beat Academy of KC’ and is the 5th and 6th hour at school for students.“It's the only program in Kansas City that teaches kids how to make hip hop production,” Gillespie said.Gillespie launched the program back in August.“It's been something I've done in my personal life,” Gillespie said. “I've been a professional musician for 15 years and it's been super rewarding.”From beats to rhythms, students take their creativity to a whole new level.“I'm excited to go here everyday,” freshman Thom Van Til said. “I get joyful when I come here, like it helps me calm down,” 8th grader K’ron Lyons said.The class is producing more than just quality hip hop, it’s also producing higher grades and more engagement from students.“Justin would probably say you cannot perform because your grades is bad, so he encourages me to like make sure I do my work,” Lyons said.Students plan to perform what they’ve been working on at the Beat Academy Block Party alongside Kansas City hip hop artists like Ces Cru, JL & Info Gates, Adrian Truth and Suli4Q. The school is raising funds to build a recording studio this summer, to make more courses available to students next year.  1328

(KGTV) -- A Rock Star of Science came to San Diego to speak to medical students at UC San Diego about the latest research in Alzheimer’s.While here, Dr. Rudolph Tanzi, a Professor of Neurology at Harvard Medical School, and Vice-Chair of Neurology at Massachusetts General Hospital met up with 10News Anchor Kimberly Hunt.Dr. Tanzi discussed his latest research, drugs in trial that may be able to wipe out the Alzheimer's decades before symptoms, and testing to target the inflammation associated with memory loss.Tanzi also spoke to Hunt about his other passion. His love of music.This passion has taken him down an unlikely path. One that has him performing live with famed guitarist Joe Perry, and playing keyboards on the last Aerosmith album.“If you can find creative success in music, that can be instant, then that will feed longer term successes in science that might take 10 years. It allows you to stick with it," Tanzi said. "Scientific success takes years, in music you can have success in a solo in a few minutes. Creative success, breeds creative success…so one feeds the other.” Tanzi also co-wrote an Alzheimer’s anthem with The Voice and Phantom star Chris Mann. JAMUL, Calif. (KGTV) — Hidden deep in the East County is a little-known winter wonderland. The centerpiece is a remarkable treehouse designed with a Christmas theme. It was built in 2013 in the yard of the Wellington family's Jamul yard for the Animal Planet television show "Treehouse Masters." The Wellington's daughter had heard of the show and suggested her parents apply. So she had to wait quite a few years to get her treehouse," Kathie Wellington told 10News.Originally, Kathie planned to use the home for her grandchildren and as a fun meeting spot for an organization dear to her heart: FORBS (Fraternal Order of Real Bearded Santas). Each year, FORBS chooses around a dozen San Diego families who are down on their luck and provide Christmas presents, each delivered on Christmas day by a Santa. The Wellington's and their daughter, Vikki, came up with the idea of using the treehouse as a fundraiser. One weekend each December, they open up the treehouse for family pictures. The fee includes professional photographs, a real bearded Santa, cookies, hot cocoa, and craft activities.
