SAN DIEGO (AP) — Fans at the Holiday Bowl between No. 19 Iowa and No. 22 Southern California will be asked to do the “Iowa Wave” directed at patients in a children’s hospital in Iowa City as well as representatives from two children’s hospitals in Southern California who will be at the game on Dec. 27.The wave will replicate what has become a game-day salute at Hawkeyes home games to patients and family members at the University of Iowa Stead Family Children’s Hospital.The salute started on Sept. 2, 2017, when more than 70,000 fans stood at the end of the first quarter and waved to patients and families in the children’s hospital, which rises above Kinnick Stadium. The patients and families waved back. SAN DIEGO — San Diegans can participate in AstraZeneca's COVID-19 vaccine trial, which recently showed 90 percent effectiveness under a certain dosage.AstraZeneca announced Monday that its vaccine was 90 percent effective when participants started with a half dose, followed by a full dose at least four weeks later. It is currently seeking participants through UC San Diego Health and other partners for its ongoing trials. Full doses given four weeks apart were 62 percent effective in the trial. “These findings show that we have an effective vaccine that will save many lives," said Professor Andrew Pollard, Chief Investigator of the Oxford Vaccine Trial, in a statement released by AstraZeneca. "Excitingly, we’ve found that one of our dosing regimens may be around 90 percent effective and if this dosing regime is used, more people could be vaccinated with planned vaccine supply."Elana Godebu, a UC San Diego urologist, said she has seen the impacts of Coronavirus firsthand. She is currently practicing at El Centro Regional Medical Center, affiliated with UC San Diego. She says the center is filling up because of a rise in local cases and patients coming up from Mexico. The state recently built a 50-bed tent in the parking lot for non-Covid patients. Godebu got the first dose of the vaccine two weeks ago, which also could have been a placebo."Personally I've seen my friends and my colleagues and my patients, they've gotten sick, they've lost family, they've lost friends, and so we got the AstraZenica trial out in El Centro," she said. Godebu said she encourages anyone who has an opportunity to get the vaccine to take advantage. "If we try to get to herd immunity the other way we're going to lose so many people," she said. SAN DIEGO — It appears the Congressional seat vacated by Republican Duncan Hunter will remain in Republican hands, according a new scientific poll.The ABC-10 Union-Tribune scientific poll shows Republican Darrell Issa leading Democrat Ammar Campa-Najjar 51 percent to 40 percent, with 9 percent undecided. The poll, released Tuesday, has a margin of error of 5.7 points. It comes after the two prior polls showed the candidates in a virtual tie for the 50th Congressional District, which comprises most of East County and stretches into southern Riverside County. The shift came because independents moved to support Issa. Last month, the poll showed Campa-Najjar leading Issa in independents by 13 points. Tuesday's poll showed a major swing, with Issa leading among independents by 14 points. That's a 27-point swing. "In the end, independents in red-leaning area tend to be more red leaning, vice versa for blue-leaning areas, and so it's not surprising that Darrell Issa, as we get closer to the election, is bringing home these independents out in East County, San Diego," said Thad Kousser, political scientist at UC San Diego.The 50th District is the county's last in which Republicans outnumber Democrats in registration, giving Issa the advantage.In an interview Tuesday, Issa said he was traveling the district from Temecula to Jamul, meeting voters with social distancing. "I think my 18 years of support for pro-business, pro-50th type voting has allowed me to whether some pretty egregious claims of, somehow, corruptness and so on," he said. SAN DIEGO (CNS) -- A 37-year-old man was fatally shot on the sidewalk near a parking garage in downtown San Diego's East Village neighborhood, police said Wednesday.The shooting was reported at around 10 p.m. Tuesday near the parking garage on G Street between 14th and 15th streets that serves the Albertsons grocery store, San Diego Police Lt. Andra Brown said.Officers responded and found a 37-year-old man lying on the sidewalk at the entrance of the parking garage with at least one apparent gunshot wound, Brown said.The victim, whose name was withheld pending family notification, was pronounced dead at the scene, she said."It is early in the investigation and little is known about the circumstances surrounding the man's death," Brown said.Witnesses reported seeing a man wearing a dark, hooded sweatshirt and a black hat run through the parking garage after the shooting, then turn westbound on Market Street, the lieutenant said.
