SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — One man is dead and another person was injured after two separate shootings just miles apart early Saturday.The first shooting occurred in the Lincoln Park area before 3:30 a.m. near Euclid and Imperial avenues. A suspect wearing dark clothing reportedly shot at a group of transients, according to San Diego Police.One person was hit by debris from the gunshot and taken to the hospital as a precaution.MAP: Track crime happening in your neighborhoodA second shooting occurred about two miles away, an officer patrolling Mountain View heard gunshots around the same time. He arrived to find a man lying on the ground on South 45th Street, near Willy Henderson Sports Complex.The Hispanic man in his 20s to 30s was shot multiple times and died at the scene, police said. His identity has not been released.Police are searching for a white Volkswagon seen in the area by witnesses following the shooting. Police said there is no indication the shooting is gang-related.Police received calls about both shootings around the same time but said there is nothing to suggest the two are connected. 1153

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - North Park’s Chicken Pie Shop is celebrating 80 years in business Friday and Saturday with deals for customers.The restaurant was originally located on 5th Avenue downtown. Then-owner George Whitehead moved his business to Hillcrest. The storefront at 5th and Robinson now houses a Starbucks.Eventually, Whitehead’s longtime employee John Townsend bought the business and moved it to El Cajon Blvd. at Oregon St. Townsend handed it down to his two sons.“Our father worked so hard for so many years. It’s a grind; you gotta be up for the task each and every day.”Bob Townsend is proud of the Chicken Pie Shop's history. He estimates the number of chicken pies sold at more than 30 million.“People just keep coming,” said Townsend. “They respect good old-school cooking.”Townsend described customers who travel to San Diego and head straight to North Park from the airport. Others buy coolers to bring home some of the restaurant’s frozen creations. Some devoted patrons included boxer Archie Moore and Mesa College coach Bill Sandback, both of whom Townsend served regularly until they passed.It’s not just the customers who stick around. The restaurant's dessert baker has been working for Chicken Pie Shop for 55 years and is now in his 80s.“If I made him retire, he’d probably die,” Townsend said.While Townsend is invested in the family legacy, his wife Lisa takes care of day-to-day operations while Townsend works as an instructor at Riverwalk Golf Course in Mission Valley. The Townsend family tradition may continue. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Police arrested a man Monday suspected of hitting a good Samaritan with his car at Ocean Beach in April before leaving the scene.According to police, Jaron Hillyer, 27, was arrested for felony hit-and-run, driving with a suspended license and no valid insurance.Police say Hillyer struck Julio Vazquez on the 2900 block of Sunset Cliffs Boulevard April 9 after Vazquez pulled over to help a couple stranded in their broken-down vehicle.RELATED: Good Samaritan recovering after hit and run accident in Ocean Beach  Following the crash, Vazquez was hospitalized with a broken leg and bruised lung.After police released a description of Hillyer’s vehicle, police were able to identify and arrest the suspect.Anyone with information is asked to call the San Diego Police Department at 619-531-2000 or Crime Stoppers at 888-580-8477.RELATED: Man helping stranded couple on Ocean Beach road struck by vehicle   942

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - More than 700 underclassmen moved into dorms at San Diego State University Thursday, and a new report says a growing number of them are from out of state.A new analysis by USA Today says 78 percent of SDSU's incoming freshman were from California students in 2017. That compares to 88 percent in 2012. Out-of-state students pay an extra ,880 in tuition each year. "The cost is definitely a part of it, but, just, Florida isn't as appealing. Too hot, too humid," said Jackson Noye, an incoming freshman from Jacksonville. "Nothing can really beat San Diego."The University called the study "a bit misleading." In a statement, it said enrollment for in-state and out-of-state students is increasing, and that any suggestion it is prioritizing out-of-state students is untrue. "The number of students SDSU can admit and teach, as defined by the resident target enrollments, is contingent upon the amount of state funding allocated," the statement read in part. "SDSU is given an enrollment target for in-state students every year, and the state only provides funding to teach the targeted number of students. For that reason, SDSU currently enrolls the number of students funded."While freshman admission may be getting more competitive, many times students have a better chance of getting in to their top choice as a transfer. "The most selective public four-year universities often have higher acceptance rates for transfer applicants than first-year applicants," said Craig Meister, an admissions consultant. Rob Franek, editor and chief of the Princeton Review, said in addition to having solid test scores and a high GPA, students can set themselves apart by showing their desire to go to their top choice. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — One young man was named the newest recruit of the San Diego Police Department Wednesday.SDPD's newest officer, five-year-old Liam, was sworn in by Chief David Nisleit as part of a ceremony hosted by the department and Make-A-Wish San Diego.Liam, who was born with a congenital heart defect, began his first day on the beat soon after his ceremony. He and his partner received a call to help capture a bank robber. Bank of America also partnered with Make-A-Wish to offer up a location for a bank robbery and arrest scene, where the two cops took in the suspect.Liam and his partner then returned to police headquarters to interview the suspect.The Make-A-Wish event was held just one day before the department celebrates its 130th anniversary. 770
