SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - San Diego-based U.S. Border Patrol agents arrested a sex offender and stopped smuggling at sea over the holiday weekend, Customs and Border Patrol officials announced Thursday. Agents spotted a man in East San Diego County about six miles north of the U.S.-Mexico border at 12:30 a.m. on July 6. The 53-year-old Honduran national did not have any documents verifying his residency, officials said. Agents took the unidentified Honduran man to a station for processing. They discovered he had been convicted of sexually assaulting a child and sentenced to prison in New Hampshire in 2008, according to the CBP. The man will be processed for illegal re-entry after removal, officials said. A U.S. Coast Guard cutter made the second significant arrest of the holiday weekend, officials said. The crew intercepted a boat off Point Loma the evening of July 7. Although it appeared to have one person on board, Coast Guard crew members found an additional 12 people suspected of trying to enter the U.S. illegally, officials reported. The group taken into custody included nine men and two women from Mexico, and a Salvadoran man and woman. Border Patrol Agents also arrested 530 people who tried to cross the border illegally over the long weekend. 1270

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — San Diego Unified School District is warning parents and staff of a breach involving the personal data of students and staff.District official said in a release the breach dating back to January 2018 may have impacted the personal data of as many as 500,000 students enrolled in the district between the 2008-2009 and 2018-2019 school years. The data is believe to have been accessed by a phishing email effort, according to the district. Those staff members and parents affected have been alerted by SDUSD.Officials said investigators began looking into reports of phishing emails in October 2018. At that time, roughly 50 staff members whose accounts were compromised had security on their accounts reset immediately, according to the district. An investigation determined that unauthorized access was gained to the district’s network services, including their student database. The student database contains personal identifying information, potential health information, scheduling, and grade information. The district says it has since taken steps to prevent unauthorized access from reoccurring and to "eliminate" any continuing threat.SDUSD told 10News the breach wasn't announced until now because officials wanted to verify all their information and not compromise the investigation.“Data security has become an increasing concern for public agencies, corporations and private citizens nationwide,” Toren Allen, executive director of San Diego Unified’s Integrated Technology Department, said. “We are constantly reviewing our practices and systems in an effort to find efficiencies and to identify potential vulnerabilities.”The district recommends that anyone whose data may have been accessed to remain vigilant of their credit cards and account and contact a credit reporting agency to notify them of the breach of information. Parents or staff members can request an identity theft/fraud alert, get credit freeze information, or order a free credit report by through any of the following credit reporting agencies:EquifaxExperianTransUnion 2078

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — St. Augustine High School, an all-boys Catholic school in North Park, has filed a lawsuit against California Gov. Gavin Newsom and other state officials to allow the school to reopen for in-person instruction. The school says that after holding its summer school and athletic programs in-person for more than 400 students without any reports of COVID-19 cases, they are seeking to stop the state's enforcement against in-person classes during the pandemic this fall."At Saints, we don’t believe remote learning is sufficient to provide a quality education our students are entitled to and our families have come to expect," said Principal James Horne. "We are confident we can open our school safely, consistent with CDC and San Diego County health guidance. We ran a safe and successful summer school program and believe it is an indicator that we can safely return to school in the fall."The school says it adhered to the county's public health guidelines and safety measures during its summer programs, including required to face masks, social distancing requirements, air conditioning systems using UV lights to sanitize the air, and buildings and classrooms being regularly sanitized with an electrostatic disinfecting mist system.St. Augustine also said a distance learning option would still be offered for families who don't want to send their children back to school in-person."After appeals from many families to return to the classroom, Saints is pursuing the best way to offer opportunities that are the right fit for all its students and families," the school said. 1604
