NOBLESVILLE, Ind. — The teacher whose actions stopped a shooting at Noblesville West Middle School om Friday said his actions were, in his mind, "the only acceptable actions."Science teacher Jason Seaman didn't say much Monday morning in his first press conference since the shooting on Friday. But what he did say only reinforced what many already know about Seaman: It's not about him. He brushed off credit for stopping the shooter, instead praising other teachers, students and the school resource officer at the school. "I want to make it clear that my actions on that day, in my mind, were the only acceptable actions I could've done given the circumstances," Seaman said. "I deeply care for my students and their well-being. That is why I did what I did that day."Police say Seaman, 29, tackled a student who started firing in his classroom Friday morning. He was shot three times during the incident, but released from the hospital Saturday. Ella Whistler, a student at the school, was shot Friday. Her family says she's doing well at Riley Hospital for Children."I can't say enough how proud of Ella I am and how we all should be," Seaman said. NEW YORK (AP) — Mall owners Simon Property Group and Brookfield Property Partners are close to a deal to buy department store chain, J.C. Penney, out of bankruptcy and keep the chain running. Penney's lawyer Josh Sussberg announced the tentative pact, which will save roughly 70,000 jobs, during a brief hearing in bankruptcy court Wednesday. More than 600 stores are expected to be saved, USA Today reported.According to the Wall Street Journal, Simon and Brookfield will own about 490 locations and a group of lenders will own 160 stores.Sussberg noted that a letter of intent including details of the pact will be filed with the bankruptcy court the next day. The 118-year-old department store based in Plano, Texas, filed for bankruptcy protection in mid-May, one of the biggest retailers to do so since the pandemic temporarily shut down non-essential stores around the country. 891

NEW YORK, N.Y. – It’s been nearly a year since the death of Elijah McClain in Colorado, but as people across the U.S. learn of his case, more are calling for justice.In New York City, a beautiful vigil was held on Monday to honor the life of the 23-year-old man, who played violin.A crowd of musicians with string instruments gathered in Washington Square Park to play a variety of songs, like “Amazing Grace” and “We Shall Overcome.”In videos shot by Yuxi Liu, spectators with candles can be seen crowding the Washington Square Arch, where the musicians were playing.Liu says the vigil wasn’t organized like a formal event, but that’s part of what made it so special. He says there was no rehearsal and you can even see people running up late in his video.“However, that’s exact the reason why it’s beautiful,” said Liu. “People showed up only because people care. Me and bunch of other photographers showed up because we want to help document the moment.”Elijah McClain caseThere’s been renewed interest in the Elijah McClain case after nationwide protests put a spotlight on past instances of police use of force across the country.McClain died on Aug. 24, 2019, shortly after being arrested by officers with the Aurora Police Department.KMGH reports that McClain was walking home after purchasing iced tea at a convenience store when a bystander called 911 to report “a suspicious man wearing a ski mask and waving his arms.” Family says McClain wore the mask because he was anemic and got cold easily.When officers tracked McClain down, police say he began “resisting.” Body camera footage shows officers grab McClain almost immediately after attempting to stop him.As police struggled to detain McClain, an officer placed him in a "carotid hold" — a maneuver designed to limit blood flow to the brain. When McClain became unresponsive, paramedics administered a shot of ketamine "due to the level of physical force applied while restraining the subject and his agitated mental state."Police insist that paramedics were the ones who chose to administer ketamine. NEW YORK — David Dinkins, the first Black mayor of New York City, died Monday at the age of 93.Dinkins was elected in 1989 and served as mayor from 1990 to 1993, making him the first and only Black man to serve as the city's mayor.He was born in 1927 in Trenton, New Jersey. He was drafted, served as a Marine and later graduated from Howard University and Brooklyn Law School. He served in the state assembly before later becoming president of the board of elections, a city clerk and Manhattan borough president.Dinkins defeated longtime incumbent Mayor Ed Koch in the Democratic primary in 1989 and later beat Rudy Giuliani on his path to City Hall.In his inaugural address, he vowed to be "mayor of all the people of New York" and declared, "we are all foot soldiers on the march to freedom."Dinkins was known for his reserved public demeanor and civility.He was an American voice in favor of anti-apartheid sanctions, and his policies as mayor reflected his support for South Africa.He also created the office of Special Commissioner of Investigations for schools, built a system of after hour youth centers called Beacon Schools, and worked to create an all civilian police complaint review board.According to a city biography, Dinkins was sharply criticized for his handling of racial strife in Crown Heights, a boycott of Korean Grocers in Brooklyn and civil unrest in Washington Heights. He also dealt with sluggish economic growth.Giuliani succeeded Dinkins in 1993 after one term in office.After leaving City Hall, Dinkins remained active in city politics and taught public affairs at Columbia University.The NYPD said initial indications were that he died of natural causes.Dinkins was married to his wife Joyce for more than 65 years, and together they had two children.Joyce Dinkins died in October. New research has found American workers took an average of 17.2 days of vacation in 2017, up almost a half-day from 2016.Project: Time Off, who are affiliated with the U.S. Travel Association, says "this marks the highest level for American vacation usage since 2010 (17.5 days) and more than a full-day increase since bottoming out at 16 days in 2014."But maybe these aren't enough days as 52 percent of Americans left an "accumulated 705 million unused days" in 2017, which has increased from 662 million in 2016.How?
