SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A pillar to the community and a San Diego civic icon Reverend George Walker Smith has died at 91. For six decades, Rev. Smith was a trailblazing leader in the African American community. Smith also led Christ United Presbyterian Church of San Diego for decades. Those who were lucky enough to cross paths with him say he was kind to all. "We kind of thought of Rev. Smith as the black godfather of San Diego, and of this church, because he helped so many people," said Delores McNeely, a church member of 30 years. He was the first African American to be elected in the city when he won the race for the San Diego Board of Education in 1963. Rev. Smith started the Catfish Club, whose weekly lunches were a gathering spot for those interested in civic or political issues. "All the political leaders in the community came, and we had this huge forum, and they listened to him. And if something were going on in the community, the first person that they would call was Rev. Smith," said McNeely.McNeely says the forums started at the church but then moved to Channel 10 when attendance got too large. "His legacy is going to help the community to grow, everything he did, and wanted to do," said McNeely.Members of the congregation spoke to 10News Sunday. "He was a person who would never say no to anyone if you asked him to do. If he couldn't do it, he found someone who could," Jewel Kelley, a member of the church said. Rev. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A Marine died Saturday night after being hit by a car in the Midway district. San Diego Police say the crash happened around 7 p.m. on the 2700 block of Midway Drive. According to police, the man in his early 20s left a bar in the area when he walked or fell onto Midway Drive before being struck by a car. Police are checking surveillance cameras in the area to identify the driver, who left after the crash. A woman who lives in the area says cars often speed on the road and that there are few places to cross the street.“Like almost a half a mile down, and so if you're gonna cross, you can either walk extra far or you can jaywalk'; a lot of people you do you see jaywalking,” Quinn Dekker told 10News. 736

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A random act of kindness at a Rancho Bernardo grocery store has a grateful grandma paying it forward. Kathy Yezarski went to the Albertsons at Rancho Bernardo and Poway Roads Friday night to buy milk and cereal for her grandchildren, who were staying at her home. She was about to pay for her groceries when she noticed a problem. “When I got to the checkout I was really embarrassed to see that I didn’t have my wallet,” Yezarski said. Yezarski thought she’d have to leave the items behind and return home when “a very kind young man” noticed her dilemma. “The man behind me very quickly said ‘I’ve got this,’” Yezarski said. Yezarski was mortified she had forgotten her wallet. “It was really touching to me…heartwarming that he would do that for someone.” Yezarski was so moved, she posted about the kind act on the Nextdoor app for her neighborhood. She was hoping the young man would see the post but she wasn’t expecting the reaction she received. “I didn’t realize when I posted until after I posted that two previous posts had been about recent shootings, and I think people were just reeling from that, feeling so upset and I think they needed to hear something positive. A lot of people said that: thank you for restoring my faith in humanity,” Yezarski said. She was inspired to perform a kind act of her own. “Beyond just thanking him, I thought - I’ve got to pay this forward. I went on the website for the San Diego Food Bank and donated. I thought, wow, I can’t just let this stop here, I can’t. I need to do that, he triggered this desire in me to pay this forward.” Yezarski hopes the young man realizes the power of his generosity. “I would want to tell him ‘you’re awesome’, you are just an amazing person and just thank you because you started something that really touched a lot of people,” she said. 1848

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A man fired as many as five shots at a parked car in San Ysidro Wednesday morning, San Diego Police said.The shooting happened at 7 a.m. at an apartment complex near West San Ysidro Boulevard and Dairy Mart Road, according to officers.No one was hurt by the gunfire.Police said the man surrendered peacefully when they arrived at the scene. The motive for the shooting was not immediately known. 422

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A local hardware store is hoping to find the family of a mysterious model the store used for an ad when it first opened its doors in the late 1800s.The woman, known as the “Hardware Lady,” modeled hardware items on her dress for one of San Diego Hardware’s first advertisements 125 years ago.The company is hoping to identify the mystery model in time for their December 8 anniversary party. The store also hopes to honor the model and her family.The model’s dress was styled with keys, locks and chains and a small wood burning stove. The woman’s crown was made of spoons, clothespins and other hardware from the store.The store was founded in 1892 and now operates in Kearny Mesa and online. 721
