UNITED NATIONS, May 31 (Xinhua) -- China on Monday called on the UN Security Council to quickly respond to and take actions on Israel's deadly attack against a humanitarian flotilla bound for Gaza."China is shocked by Israel's attack on a multinational convoy carrying international aid to Gaza which resulted in heavy casualties," said Yang Tao, a counsellor of the Chinese permanent mission to the United Nations, at the 15-nation council's emergency meeting."We condemn Israel's actions targeting humanitarian workers and civilians," he said. "We support a quick response by the Security Council and take necessary actions."Yang also expressed serious concern about the "grim" humanitarian situation in the occupied Palestinian territory, especially the Gaza Strip."We urge Israel immediately and fully implement Security Council resolution 1860, fully open border crossings, lift blockade on the Gaza Strip so as to allow unimpeded flow of humanitarian aid to the Gaza Strip and allow local people to achieve early recovery and restore a normal life," he added.The council was currently meeting behind closed doors to discuss the text of a draft presidential statement submitted by Turkey.
BEIJING, April 2 (Xinhua) -- Leaders of seven countries have confirmed their participation in the opening ceremony of Boao Forum for Asia's 2010 meeting in south China's Hainan Province on April 10, Foreign Ministry spokesman Qin Gang said Friday.The leaders are: Lao President Choummaly Saygnasone, Danish Prime Minister Lars Loekke Rasmussen, Mongolian Prime Minister Sukhbaataryn Batbold, Iranian First Vice President Mohammad Reza Rahimi, Afghan Vice President Mohammad Karim Khalili, Timor-Leste's Vice President Jose Luis Guterres and Cambodian Senior Minister and Minister of Planning Chhay Than.Qin said Chinese Vice President Xi Jinping will meet the foreign leaders on the sidelines of the forum.The forum, which will focus on Asia's green and sustainable development in the wake of global economic downturn, is to be held in Boao, a coastal resort in Hainan, from April 9 to 11.Danish Prime Minister Lars Loekke Rasmussen will also pay a working visit to China as guest of Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao, Qin said.

BAGHDAD, June 1 (Xinhua) -- The ongoing Shanghai Expo is a very good platform for Iraq and China to communicate with each other, some Iraqis said on Tuesday, adding the war-torn country needs China's successful experiences for rebuilding.The Iraqis made the remarks when the Iraq Pavilion opened Tuesday at the Shanghai World Expo, one month into the global event. The country is the last of the 246 participants to open its pavilion."After decades of isolation under circumstances of sanctions and wars, I believe my country is in acute need for such an event (Expo)," Adel Hameed, 35, a teacher in Baghdad western district of Mansour told Xinhua."As a developing nation, Iraq found Shanghai a great place to demonstrate the latest technologies that we need to rebuild our country," said Hameed, who disclosed that he sometimes follows the latest news about the Shanghai Expo from Internet at home.Asked what makes him so interested in following the Expo news, he smiled and said "to me Baghdad is the city with glorious past and promising future. BEIJING, May 1 (Xinhua) -- China's police forces nationwide were ordered Saturday to step up security of kindergartens and schools after a spate of violent attacks against school children.An emergency circular issued by the Ministry of Public Security also called for harsh punishments of criminals who attacked school children in order to deter potential attackers.It ordered all necessary measures be taken against school attackers in accordance with the law to stop a crime in progress.The ministry instructed police to work with courts and prosecutors to handle such cases swiftly.Police must also work with education authorities to comprehensively screen all campuses and their surrounding areas for security risks.
