HUNTINGTON BEACH, Calif. (AP) — Marine researchers have determined there are more sharks in the water off the coast of Southern California than ever before. KCAL-TV reported the Shark Lab at California State University, Long Beach, has tagged 38 sharks, which is more than triple the number tagged tag last year. In another image of unity, House Speaker Paul Ryan and House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi did the same several minutes later, standing next to one another as a second wreath was placed.Pelosi, who is vying to become House speaker when Democrats take control of the House of Representatives in the new Congress, stood next to Kevin McCarthy, who will serve as the House Republican leader in the next Congress, as lawmakers filed in at the start of the event and the two could be seen speaking to one another.Earlier in the day, McConnell and Schumer both gave speeches on the Senate floor praising the former President."He embodied the characteristics we admire in a president: integrity, civility, dignity, humility," Schumer said during his speech. The Senate Democratic leader added, "I knew him to be a fine man. A decent man. And even when he opposed your views, you knew he was doing what he thought was best for the United States of America."A long list of prominent current and former officials gathered inside the rotunda to pay their respects.Vice President Mike Pence delivered a speech. Prominent former lawmakers, including former Senate Majority Leader Republican Bill Frist, were seen at the Capitol as were sitting Supreme Court justices, including Clarence Thomas, who was nominated to the bench by Bush.Outside the Capitol, a long line of people waiting to pay their respects to the 41st President began to form early in the evening. Starting at around 7:30 p.m. ET on Monday, members of the public began to be allowed into the rotunda to view the casket.Joe McGarvey, a 62-year old Democrat, was one of the people who waited in line to pay his respects to what he described as "a man who gave a life of service to the country.""I'm a Democrat, but as President, he did a lot of good things," McGarvey said during a brief interview. He described Bush as a "very humble, caring person -- you could tell, just how he treated people."As McGarvey waited, the temperature began to drop. "It's getting a little cold here," he said, "even though I'm standing out here in the cold, I'm glad I did it."Stephen Keblish and Nate Crossett from Utica, New York said they had driven down to Washington, DC that morning.Keblish described it as a "once in a lifetime kind of opportunity.""It's a sort of pilgrimage in a way. Iverson died in December 2017 while battling the Thomas Fire in Ventura County. The cross-country ride last 31 days. Pittman organized the ride to raise money for the Iverson Foundation for Active Awareness (IFAA). The foundation was started by Cory's wife, Ashley, to provide peer support and mental health programs for emergency fiirst responders. Hours after two Atlanta Police officers were charged in connection with the death of Rayshard Brooks, the department confirmed that an unspecified number of officers are calling off tonight.The city’s Mayor, Keisha Lance Bottoms, told CNN’s Chris Cuomo that some officers are being asked to extend their shift on Wednesday. Bottoms added that other jurisdictions have been notified and were asked to be on standby to provide the city with assistance.Despite reports on social media, Atlanta Police denied that officers are walking off the job.“The department is experiencing a higher than usual number of call outs with the incoming shift,” the department confirmed on Twitter. “We have enough resources to maintain operations & remain able to respond to incidents.”Bottoms acknowledged to Cuomo that officer morale is an issue.Earlier on Wednesday, Garrett Rolfe, who was fired from the Atlanta Police Department following the shooting, was charged with felony murder and 10 other crimes, including four counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and several violations of his oath of office.Officer Devin Brosnan has been charged with aggravated assault and several violations of his oath of office. Brosnan was placed on administrative leave late Saturday.Brooks died on Friday night after Rolfe shot him in the parking lot of a Wendy’s restaurant.The Georgia Bureau of Investigations said that officers responded to a call of a man who fell asleep behind the wheel in a drive thru. The police accused Brooks of failing a field sobriety test, which prompted the officers to attempt to arrest Brooks.Video of the incident showed that Brooks then struggled with officers over a Taser. As Brooks took off withTaser in hand, Rolfe fatally shot Brooks.Brooks was transported to the hospital, and he died during surgery. 1836

House Judiciary Chairman Bob Goodlatte has issued subpoenas for former FBI Director James Comey and former Attorney General Loretta Lynch.Goodlatte, a Virginia Republican who is retiring, is requesting private depositions from Comey on December 3 and Lynch on December 4. House Republicans have been investigating FBI actions in the 2016 campaign, but that probe will end when Democrats take over the committee in January.Comey, who has previously rejected the committee's request for him to appear privately before the GOP-led inquiry, reiterated his position soon after the subpoenas became public."Happy Thanksgiving.
