ESCONDIDO, Calif. (KGTV) — A monitor lizard on the lam in North County has been captured, but experts say there is another one loose in the area.Friday evening, reptile expert Susan Nowicke captured the lizard, now named "Esco," in an Escondido pond, swimming for nearly an hour for the chance to secure the animal. Neighbors had previously spotted the lizard several times near the ponds off Waterhouse Glen for about a year."Esco" however, is three-feet-long while the one being sought was four-feet-long, according to Nowicke. So Nowicke says there is at least one more monitor lizard still roaming the area.RELATED: Dangerous 4-foot lizard roaming north San Diego neighborhoodMonitor lizards are considered dangerous, packing a "nasty bite" that can lead to significant injuries. If their muscular tails whip a child or animal, it can lead to severe bruising or welts. Nowicke believes "Esco" and the other lizard either escaped or were turned loose by their owners. She says as babies monitor lizards are small and manageable pets. But six months later, they grow exponentially in size and become very difficult to handle. Most of the monitor lizards at her museum and education center, EcoVivarium off South Juniper St. in Escondido, are captured strays or surrenders. "They're thinking, 'Oh, it's going to grow up and be my best friend. It's just like a dog.' No, it's not a dog, it's a wild animal," Nowicke said.The lizards can grow up to seven and a half feet long, though the one captured in Escondido was only about three feet long. While the lizards are larger than most wildlife living in neighborhoods, it's difficult to catch because it can hide in trees, ponds, and even storm drains.Nowicke has taken "Esco" into the EcoVivarium and has him under a 30-day quarantine. She hopes to find the other lizard soon, to end what she calls "Monitor Watch."The lizard isn't the first noteworthy creature to roam our neighborhoods in the last year. In March 2018, a monitor lizard named "Bubbles" vanished from a Spring Valley pet store. Bubbles was eventually found hiding in brush near the pet store. 2118

ENCINITAS, Calif. (KGTV) — Encinitas officials announced a "one-of-a-kind" crosswalk has been placed across Coast Highway 101 in downtown.Officials say the artistic crosswalk featuring surfboard shapes and waves spans across the highway at G Street and took two years of coordination between city staff and City Council to put together. The city says the crosswalk will improve walkability and bring more public art to the area.Artist Steffen Vala, whose work has appeared around the globe and been featured by Apple, Marvel, and other big brands, was commissioned for the crosswalk."The iconography of surfboard shapes is a nod to each surfer's 'magic board,' unique to them like their fingerprint. Juxtaposing this individualism is a unifying tidal wave laid out like the ocean's fingerprint that connects all the surfboards. This symbolizes the unifying, collective, 'party wave' we are all riding and our love in protecting the environment while celebrating our differences," the city said in a release.The city says the crosswalk is the longest decorative crosswalk of its kind and first one across a historic highway. 1132

ENCINITAS, Calif. (KGTV) - Sheriff's Deputies are on the lookout for the man who jumped out of the bushes and confronted an Encinitas man with a rifle. The attack happened Friday morning on Fortuna Ranch Road when the victim was in his driveway. A neighbor tells 10News the man popped out of the bushes wearing a ski mask and camouflage clothing. He then pointed a rifle at the victim, threatening to rob or shoot him.  Deputies say, somehow, the victim was able to run to his neighbor's home and call 911. The gunman got away before law enforcement arrived, but it's unclear if he ran or drove away. With the gunman still at large, some neighbors are concerned for their safety. Crime Stoppers is offering a ,000 reward for any information leading to an arrest. ENCINITAS, Calif. (KGTV) - Two third-graders from Rancho Santa Fe are proving you can change lives no matter your age.R. Roger Rowe School third-graders Grace Miller and Madison Stine set out to send a veteran to Washington D.C. with Honor Flight San Diego.They were so successful they ended up sending two veterans."That trip for me was the most fantastic trip of my life. I've been all over the world - and Honor Flight was the most fantastic trip I've been on," said George Sousa, a Korean War veteran who served in the U.S. Army.The girls also helped send U.S. Marine Corps Veteran Marshall Varano who also fought in the Korean War."It's great to see young people like this take care of older folks," said Varano.Fundraising is critical for Honor Flight San Diego. It costs over ,000 to send one veteran to D.C. and over 0,00 for the entire weekend.
