Attorney General William Barr has agreed to go before the House Judiciary Committee on March 31 to respond to allegations that the Department of Justice is making decisions that are politically influenced. The House Judiciary Committee wants to question Barr on three incidents from this week that it found questionable. One was the DOJ's decision to overrule prosecutors' recommended sentence of Trump ally Roger Stone. Stone was convicted on charges of lying to Congress, tampering with a witness and obstructing a House investigation. On Monday, the prosecution asked the judge for a 7-9 year sentence of Stone. But following tweets from the president, Barr overruled the prosecutors, stating that the sentencing guidelines prosecutors used were too harsh."This is a horrible and very unfair situation. The real crimes were on the other side, as nothing happens to them. Cannot allow this miscarriage of justice!” Trump tweeted on Tuesday. A second incident the committee is investigating is on Barr stating publicly that he has opened a "channel" for President Donald Trump's attorney Rudolph Giuliani to deliver information to the DOJ involving presidential candidate Joe Biden and his son Hunter. Giuliani has openly said that he is looking for information from the Ukrainian government on whether the former vice president and his son conducted any wrongdoing when Joe Biden pushed for the ouster of a Ukrainian prosecutor. The third is the decision to pull the nomination of Jessie Liu, who is a U.S. Attorney who originally was nominated for a post in the Treasury Department. Liu oversaw the office that tried the prosecutions of several Trump allies, including Stone and former National Security Adviser Michael Flynn. The Judiciary Committee is chaired by Democrat Jerry Nadler, who was on the team that managed Trump's impeachment trial in the U.S. Senate. 1882

BALTIMORE — The Frederick County State's Attorney's Office in Maryland indicted a man who knowingly transmitted HIV to several women he met on dating sites.According to officials, the Frederick County Police Department started an investigation in 2017 on 34-year-old Rudolph Jericho Smith after different women told authorities that they believed Smith had infected them with HIV.During the department's investigation, officials were able to conduct witness interviews which informed them that Smith knew of his HIV-positive status since 2014. Canada's House of Commons passed a bill Monday to make it illegal to hold a whale, dolphin or porpoise captive, punishable by fines up to 0,000 USD.It's known colloquially as the "Free Willy" bill, named after the 1993 movie in which a young boy frees a killer whale from a US amusement park."Nothing fantastic ever happens in a hurry. But today we celebrate that we have ended the captivity and breeding of whales and dolphins. This is news to splash a fin at," animal rights group Humane Canada said in a tweet. The bill is expected to become law. It was introduced in the Senate in December 2015 and was already approved there but must return now and gain "royal assent."The Green Party of Canada celebrated 725

As coronavirus has quickly spread across the world, so too has the use of face masks. During a pandemic, putting on a mask may be the first thing you think to do in order to protect yourself. But public health researchers have no concrete evidence yet that masks alone significantly reduce a healthy person’s chances of getting sick. And if healthy people buy and use up large quantities of masks, there won't be enough for sick people, who are mostly likely to spread the disease, or for frontline health workers, who more frequently come into contact with the COVID-19 virus as they care for the severely ill. Experts estimate health care systems in the US will need 3.5 billion masks -- quite a bit more than than the national stockpile of about 42 million. But if every person in the U.S. were to wear one mask each day, we'd need a supply nearing 10 billion for just one month. "The most important use of masks is for our health care workers," Dr. Tom Frieden, the president and CEO of Resolve to Save Lives and former head of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, tells Newsy. "That will protect them, so they're there for us. And it will protect other patients as well, preventing them from getting infected."The CDC only recommends that people who are sick and their caregivers wear masks. When masks are unavailable, a scarf or bandana can be used. But more importantly, Frieden urges sick people to just stay home. "If you're sick, don't go out. Don't expose others. Even if you're only mildly sick, your illness may kill somebody else." 1568
