This past spring, teachers from West Virginia to Oklahoma walked out of their classrooms and onto the steps of state capitols to protest low pay, overcrowded classrooms and cuts to school funding.Oklahoma teacher Jacobi Crowley was one of the teachers who participated in the strikes.“I dunno if I can be a 20 to 40-year educator,” says Crowley. “I love my job and what I do, but if things do not get better, I might have to start looking at a different career.”If things go the way he hopes this November, he will have a different career as a state senator, one who sees education as priority number 1.“We have to be fully funded,” Crowley says. “That’s the number one thing.”Crowley is one of hundreds of teachers nationwide who decided to run for public office this year. In Oklahoma alone, more than 100 teachers filed to run, and over half of them made it through their primary races in June.“They are getting frustrated with seeing the lack of support, the lack of funding and the lack of leadership out of state legislators in Oklahoma City, making those things possible for educators to be successful,” Crowley expresses.Educators say it’s a frustration that’s been building for years. In 2011, teachers staged a walkout and camped out for weeks at the Wisconsin State Capitol, protesting Gov. Scott Walker’s bill that gutted their unions. Ultimately, they were unsuccessful. But Wisconsin’s Superintendent of Schools saw that as a catalyst and decided to take matters into his own hands.“I believe the best way to fix this is to have an educator as governor of the State of Wisconsin,” says Democratic gubernatorial candidate Tony Evers.Evers will take on incumbent Gov. Scott Walker this November.Cut in funding and teacher pay has been some of the core issues of the protests. In Oklahoma, Crowley—like many other teachers—works multiple jobs to pay the bills.“I’m a football coach, that’s one thing to make ends meet,” explains Crowley. “I’m a basketball referee; I work a side gig as a radio station.”However, Crowley hopes the voters of Senate District 32 will deem him worthy of just one. 2114

TOKYO (AP) — The U.S. says Americans aboard a quarantined ship will be flown back home on a chartered flight Sunday, but that they will face another two-week quarantine. About 380 Americans are aboard the Diamond Princess cruise ship, which has docked at Yokohama, southwest of Tokyo. So far, 285 people from the ship have tested positive for a new virus. The passengers have been quarantined on the ship since Feb. 5. That 14-day quarantine is due to end Wednesday.RELATED:San Diego declares two emergencies over coronavirus to free up resourcesSan Diego couple misses cruise over coronavirus concernsPassengers board San Diego cruise ship amid Coronavirus concernsSan Diego couple stuck at sea, after Asian ports blocked entry due to Coronavirus concernsThe U.S. Embassy in Tokyo says the aircraft will arrive in Japan late Sunday. TORONTO (AP) — The United States has agreed with Canada and Mexico to extend their agreement to keep their border closed to non-essential travel to July 21 during the coronavirus pandemic. Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said Tuesday's agreement extends the closure by another 30 days. "This is an important decision that will keep people in both of our countries safe,” the prime minister said in his daily press conference. Americans who are returning to the U.S. and Canadians who are returning to Canada are exempted from the border closure.Acting Department of Homeland Security Secretary Chad Wolf issued a statement Tuesday on why extending non-essential travel restrictions with Canada and Mexico was necessary. "The Department of Homeland Security will ensure that the measures taken at our borders will protect America from all threats, including threats against the health and safety of our citizens," Wolf said in the statement. "Based on the success of the existing restrictions and the emergence of additional global COVID-19 hotspots, the Department will continue to limit non-essential travel at our land ports of entry with Canada and Mexico. This extension protects Americans while keeping essential trade and travel flowing as we reopen the American economy. The Department of Homeland Security is in close contact with our Canadian and Mexican counterparts regarding this extension, and they agree on the need to extend their non-essential travel restrictions as well. I look forward to continuing to work with our neighbors to maintain essential trade and travel while protecting the health of our respective citizenry." The Mexican Embassy in the United States said in a series of tweets that the decision came "after reviewing the development of the spread of COVID-19 in both countries." 1829

Toby the cat has been on quite the adventure in recent weeks. After his owners near Raleigh, North Carolina decided to drop off Toby at a friend's home, Toby left to return to his previous owners, who lived 12 miles away, according to the SPCA of Wake County, North Carolina. Instead of taking Toby back in after his 12-mile trek, the family instead took him to a shelter and requested the staff euthanize the cat. He was then transferred to the SPCA, which is a no-kill shelter.Toby is a healthy 7-year-old feline who has enough energy to walk 12 miles. On the SPCA’s Facebook page, dozens of commenters criticized the owners’ actions, with some offering to adopt Toby.On Monday, the SPCA announced that Toby had found a permanent home.“He has three new siblings (one feline and two human) and a cat-savvy mom to show him what a loving family is really like,” the shelter said on its Facebook page. 920
